I guess if back in the day the Robinson's jam company decided it really really hated black people and thought the best way to show them was through the imagery of the golliwog then yes, it is a symbol of racism. If however they just came up with a character to advertise their jam then no, Its just a symbol of jam.

I guess it could be by today's PC standards but I had one when I was a little girl and I didn't think of it as a doll depicting a black person any more than I related my teddy to a grizzly bear. One was my golliwog and one was my teddy and I just loved them for what they were.

Actually after looking on Google, it was not originally intended to be racist. But later ended up being used as such. The first gollywog character was created by a young female children's author called Kate Upton. This character was later adopted by other authors such as Enid Blyton and the Noddy books, as well as becoming a symbol for jam.

I have a real issue with the N word mainly as the majority of the music my daughter and her friends listen to repeat the word over and over again yet it is deemed such an offensive word! The trouble is because of this it's becoming more of a "phrase" than a racial slur as they are so used to hearing it.

It worries me that one of them may say it in a way that black person would say it to another black person then find themselves subject to a load of abuse for being racist a bit like when jade goody came out with it in the big brother house several years ago and the media went on like some kind of witch hunt even though it was not meant in a derogatory way.

While the original concept was not racist apparently. People have also decided to use Wikipedia to check out the origin. They appear to leave out "naval" chatter as to describe anyone who hasn't crossed or has not originated north of the equator, "wog".

And I believe it's also a very derogatory term used against indigenous Australians, 'wogs'

Probably also used by colonials to describe Asian Indians.

Yeah it might be PC gone mad, but nobody can deny, the part that says 'wog' has been used for a very long time as an insult. If you think that isn't the case you are pretty misguided.

At the time. It would not be racist whilst now it is. It is like the word 'negro', that is used on American census, horrible word but it was acceptable in mid 1850s.

At the moment there is a huge debate about a certain song that united have been singing about lukaku and him being well endowed. We also sing a song about park which was never classed as racist and this song was sung on Sunday as well.

I still fee uncomfy using the word black maybe because I was brought up not to use it. The gollywog was probably ok at time but not now

I understand how they can be deemed offensive today...

Unfortunately the racial connotations they evoke due to their misuse in the 60's and 70's when racism was almost acceptable have now deemed them unacceptable in today's society..

This is no different from the stigma that became attached to the union Jack due to it being associated with tattooed football hooligans and the BNP..

And as a guy mentioned above, the term "wog", which is now derogatory was coined in the 19th century as an abbreviation of Westernized Oriental Gentleman, used by the British army when recording the details of men who joined from the colonies that had no idea of where they were from as some were nomadic or just poorly educated and had no knowledge of their nationality...

It's not the symbol that is racist, it the mentality of a minority of small minded people that have created the stigma.

Or maybe we were brought up as kids that 'golliwog' was simply an advertisement for a brand of jam. And even growing up through the 70's, 80's and 90's I never regarded race as an issue. It's only nowadays it's more prominent.

And racism isn't just extended to people with darker skin. It's Eastern Europeans too. Racism isn't dictated by skin colour these days.

Unfortunately everyone is a target for -isms these days. Too fat, too skinny, too gay, too lesbian, too bi. Etc.

It's life. For most people.

To the 3 yr old me it was a big teddy that was at home with Rufus the big red dog and Rupert the bear and was a big part of my early childhood and it might be naive but children at an early age don't see it as a racist symbol it's just a toy like any other as it was to me and I just still see it as a toy nothing more or less but attitudes and beliefs have changed and sadly everything now has to be labelled in one way or anothet

It's not being narrow minded. It's being in a childhood where having a doll that was different was exciting and new. As children, we wouldn't have known the origins of any toys. And my mum never made any big deal out of it..... as children, me and my sister had dolls that were white, black, with female genitalia and male genitalia.

My hubby is 64 years old and he understands that attitudes and words that were commonplace and acceptable when he was growing up in the 50's and 60's are no longer acceptable. And he understands why.

He knows that just because this (I can't bring myself to use the word) was used to advertise jam does not make it right or diminish the insult.

He also knows that just because Al Jolson was forced to dress up was a sign of the attitudes of those times, not a reference point for today's attitude.

Just didn't like the comments about attitudes of people of a certain age.

And the use of the word 'coloured' to describe people ........ Christ ..... these are supposed to be enlightened times

Robinsons Jam used to give the badges away free on there jam jars. I still have a few to this day, they were never called 'Gollywogs' though just the Robinsons golly. Well they were when I was about 5.

Here in France there is a famous drink called Banania the tins to this day feature a Sénégalese man with a tarboosh or fez hat although today it's a characture. Original tins prewar up till about the 70s featured the Sénégalese infantry man. They are highly collectable. Incidentally this drink was issued to French soldiers during WW1 who had Sénégalese units.

The term 'wog' was never intended to be derogatory it means 'wealthy oriental gentleman' alas was hijacked into a racist slur.

and like you I do not condone racism but have myself been subjected to it when visiting other countries. Racism is an extension of fear of foreigners in general. Hence the racism against anyone who "sticks out from the crowd". Jews, eastern europeans, "blacks"(though I've never actually seen anyone who truly black),chinese and asians.

Adults make people racist. Not dolls.

People can be racist by their thoughts, opinions and actions. Dolls are as far as I can remember incapable of thought and therefore unable to form opinions. It's a FU**ING DOLL.
