I guess if back in the day the Robinson's jam company decided it really really hated black people and thought the best way to show them was through the imagery of the golliwog then yes, it is a symbol of racism. If however they just came up with a character to advertise their jam then no, Its just a symbol of jam.

I guess it could be by today's PC standards but I had one when I was a little girl and I didn't think of it as a doll depicting a black person any more than I related my teddy to a grizzly bear. One was my golliwog and one was my teddy and I just loved them for what they were.

Actually after looking on Google, it was not originally intended to be racist. But later ended up being used as such. The first gollywog character was created by a young female children's author called Kate Upton. This character was later adopted by other authors such as Enid Blyton and the Noddy books, as well as becoming a symbol for jam.

I have a real issue with the N word mainly as the majority of the music my daughter and her friends listen to repeat the word over and over again yet it is deemed such an offensive word! The trouble is because of this it's becoming more of a "phrase" than a racial slur as they are so used to hearing it.

It worries me that one of them may say it in a way that black person would say it to another black person then find themselves subject to a load of abuse for being racist a bit like when jade goody came out with it in the big brother house several years ago and the media went on like some kind of witch hunt even though it was not meant in a derogatory way.

The irony is that the people on here saying its not racist are white. Of course they're fucking racist - they're the go to definition of the wide eyed, big lipped negro. Just because anyone young before the 90s had one doesn't mean its not racist now. Its just that now we consider other races a tad more than we used to. Or some of us do anyway.

While the original concept was not racist apparently. People have also decided to use Wikipedia to check out the origin. They appear to leave out "naval" chatter as to describe anyone who hasn't crossed or has not originated north of the equator, "wog".

And I believe it's also a very derogatory term used against indigenous Australians, 'wogs'

Probably also used by colonials to describe Asian Indians.

Yeah it might be PC gone mad, but nobody can deny, the part that says 'wog' has been used for a very long time as an insult. If you think that isn't the case you are pretty misguided.

This is interesting discussion

At the time. It would not be racist whilst now it is. It is like the word 'negro', that is used on American census, horrible word but it was acceptable in mid 1850s.

At the moment there is a huge debate about a certain song that united have been singing about lukaku and him being well endowed. We also sing a song about park which was never classed as racist and this song was sung on Sunday as well.

I still fee uncomfy using the word black maybe because I was brought up not to use it. The gollywog was probably ok at time but not now

The PC brigade is way over the top in many areas of life but the Golliwog is historically racist for reasons factually pointed out in this thread.

Therefore I think it remains racially offensive because of the historical facts.

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

I understand how they can be deemed offensive today...

Unfortunately the racial connotations they evoke due to their misuse in the 60's and 70's when racism was almost acceptable have now deemed them unacceptable in today's society..

This is no different from the stigma that became attached to the union Jack due to it being associated with tattooed football hooligans and the BNP..

And as a guy mentioned above, the term "wog", which is now derogatory was coined in the 19th century as an abbreviation of Westernized Oriental Gentleman, used by the British army when recording the details of men who joined from the colonies that had no idea of where they were from as some were nomadic or just poorly educated and had no knowledge of their nationality...

It's not the symbol that is racist, it the mentality of a minority of small minded people that have created the stigma.

"

I had to laugh at that, because if I was racist I think it would be difficult to have " black" friends. I just thinking of ringing my pal Mike now, " Hey Mike ya Black cnut, you fancy coming for a game of pool now?"

and then i would ask "why did you have to include the word "black".....

does it add anything to the conversation.....?

heck i can lovingly insult my mate without bringing colour into it.... and i suppose that is something you find hard to understand......"

I was using the phrase as an example of something a racist person may use. As I am not a racist, and not well practised in insulting " coloured " people it was a poor example.

It's funny how most responses saying it's not racist are white. So not the persons being affected by the derogatory word. So they can't see or feel the impact of the symbol or word.

Exactly. To me it was a totally innocent enamel badge I could get for free. To my Jamaican friend who lived down the road from 'The Golliwog Factory' it was hateful taunt.

At least they have got rid of those weird robots that were always going on about getting smashed! It is odd to think of how many things acceptable in our child hoods that aren't now - Golliwogs can be construed as racist depending on the intention but mind your language and ain't half hot mam are really not open to interpretation.

Or maybe we were brought up as kids that 'golliwog' was simply an advertisement for a brand of jam. And even growing up through the 70's, 80's and 90's I never regarded race as an issue. It's only nowadays it's more prominent.

And racism isn't just extended to people with darker skin. It's Eastern Europeans too. Racism isn't dictated by skin colour these days.

Unfortunately everyone is a target for -isms these days. Too fat, too skinny, too gay, too lesbian, too bi. Etc.

Up on them there hills

I was in Jamaica awhile ago, a girl in the bar pointed to her name badge, it was Malcolm, shook my head and she told me it was her family slave name.

I pointed out I'm, or any of my family are not into slavery, so what's it to do with me?

The past is what it is, learn from it not live in, or as poor me.

Shocked me into thinking who is the actual racist.

Today though, I struggle to understand how anybody would think that they wouldn't offend some people...

Look; it's really simple.

Just because something comes into existence one way, doesn't mean it doesn't mean to say that is how it remains.

It's contextual.

Whilst it may have initially represented only fruit based condiments, it went on to be used in a number of negatively stereotypical ways, which it came to be synonymous with. See: The reams of information on this very subject.

My hubby is 64 years old and he understands that attitudes and words that were commonplace and acceptable when he was growing up in the 50's and 60's are no longer acceptable. And he understands why.

He knows that just because this (I can't bring myself to use the word) was used to advertise jam does not make it right or diminish the insult.

He also knows that just because Al Jolson was forced to dress up was a sign of the attitudes of those times, not a reference point for today's attitude.

The dolls/logo were probably made with no racist intent, but I dont think there is a place for them in modern society.

Im pretty sure if I waved one in any of my black mates faces, or called them a wog, Id get a smack in the mouth.

In my opinion if black people find them racist... then they are racist.

As an aside, one thing I do find offensive is 'blacked up' Morris dancers. What the fuck is all that about?

"Please sir, what's symbolism?

"You should have been paying attention yesterday, shouldn't you, lad?"

Sorry Sir...."

Why is your response in quotations when theres no source of which you are quoting?

Symbolism is not international, what one thing means to one person means naught to the other.

Basically... Some people view americas whole existance is a symbol of racism... to me its not. The Union Jack symbolises racism to some... to me it does not.

You have your opinion to your own beliefs... and i to mine... but the second you start attacking someone in anyway for that belief is the point you become a bigot. The word Bigot symbolises to some people as "Not Same Opinion as mine" or "Non Pc" to me... ill use it as it is defined.

Lordy. "

"No. They are a cariticure doll of a coloured person.

This quote referring to people as coloured is racist. I can't see how admin has let this thread go on

please don't close it.... i consider thread to be quite the eye opener and the sort the lounge has been missing to be honest.....

Yes. I agree. And it annoys the hell out of me when threads get removed. Why can't we see who the bigots are!?

I don't think you know what the word bigot means.

Someone intolerant of those with different opinions/beliefs.

Having an opinion on this isnt being bigotted. Insulting cultures or such is. Buzz words are funny when people throw them around out of context because its are popular to call people it.

Having a opinion isn't bigoted. I'd agree. Having a strong, unreasonable opinion however is. I can read a dictionary too. Although I don't need to refer to the first definition that google throws at me to know what I mean. "

Its the dictionary definition... you cannot redefine words on your own accord.

Strong unreasonable... only to you. Which makes you a bigot by definition. And that isnt even a bad thing given certain situations... you just use it as one for every situation.

For instance... I think nazis are immoral pieces of shit... that quote is bigotted... but you would agree.

south west , continental

Robinsons Jam used to give the badges away free on there jam jars. I still have a few to this day, they were never called 'Gollywogs' though just the Robinsons golly. Well they were when I was about 5.

Here in France there is a famous drink called Banania the tins to this day feature a Sénégalese man with a tarboosh or fez hat although today it's a characture. Original tins prewar up till about the 70s featured the Sénégalese infantry man. They are highly collectable. Incidentally this drink was issued to French soldiers during WW1 who had Sénégalese units.

The term 'wog' was never intended to be derogatory it means 'wealthy oriental gentleman' alas was hijacked into a racist slur.

PC brigade will obviously have a field day with this.

"People are too PC nowadays. As I kid I never found a golliwog doll to depict black people.... it was just another doll. Like the one that cried tears or * shock horror* the one that had a willy. Remember being more shocked by that!

Adults make people racist. Not dolls.

People can be racist by their thoughts, opinions and actions. Dolls are as far as I can remember incapable of thought and therefore unable to form opinions. It's a FU**ING DOLL.

Your right it's a Fucking doll made by a racist many years ago. How can you be defending this I can't believe you can be that narrow minded

It's not being narrow minded. It's being in a childhood where having a doll that was different was exciting and new. As children, we wouldn't have known the origins of any toys. And my mum never made any big deal out of it..... as children, me and my sister had dolls that were white, black, with female genitalia and male genitalia.

We never made anything about it nearly 40 years ago..... why are you now?

Did you ever go to a football match 40 years or so ago...and listen to the crowds singing about Golliwog...slinging banana's on the field at the feet of the black player in the team....

its raciest simple as....and tbh i was ashamed to be part of that crowd

And that's why Robinsons who made the Jam withdrew it "

Robinsons did not make the jam it was Robertsons.

and like you I do not condone racism but have myself been subjected to it when visiting other countries. Racism is an extension of fear of foreigners in general. Hence the racism against anyone who "sticks out from the crowd". Jews, eastern europeans, "blacks"(though I've never actually seen anyone who truly black),chinese and asians.

Get to know these people and the majority are fine upstanding people who are striving to achieve the same goals as every decent person.

I stopped reading as soon as I saw reference to that great slur, the !PC brigade' (oh what bastards!)

The answer to the original question is simply yes.

Whatever the origins, the history, the fact is that they did become and are today a symbol of racism.

Okay, but that definition you quoted just described every person ever. You must be intolerant of someones ideas... including racist ideas or sexist. Therefor you're a bigot in some form.

Say that again when you have a coherent argument.

Im sorry english is hard for you. But in a simple terms for you... Bigot is not a insult. Its a word with a definition that applies to everyone in some form.p

Oh the irony amuses me so. I expect it's over your head though

I guess you gave up on your argument... so I guess you had nothing else to say on your misuse of the word.

And say what you want about my phones mispellings... at least i can use words in context.

No. I just have better things to do than argue with the clueless.

Thats the nice sound of someone losing an argument. Nice use of ad hominems there

You think being called a bigot isn't insulting. I see no further argument to be had.

By definition... its not. The fact you redefined the word is insulting.

Bigoted:obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, and intolerant towards other people's beliefs and practices.

Okay, but that definition you quoted just described every person ever. You must be intolerant of someones ideas... including racist ideas or sexist. Therefor you're a bigot in some form.

Let me give you an example of an insult by definition.

"Idiot - A stupid person"

See the difference"

You're ignoring the word unreasonable.

No. 1. Unreasonably is subjective. 2. "Obstinately Or Unreasonably" quite sure your firm and stubborn on your stance regarding racism. There for it fits into "Obstinately"

So the definition still applies to almost every person ever.

It obviously means a lot to you to be right on this and have the last word. You're happy to be called a bigot. That works for me too.
