I'm looking forward to the Chestnut harvest ......
I know of a number of trees that are fairly isolated so I usually get a generous supply which I give to some OAPs ...... |

Over the back of us is Aylestone meadows, years ago it used to be allotments and it's great, there are loads of blackberry bushes,pair,apple,plum and peach tree's, we pick lots every year and make some lovely crumbles and things |

I spent ages picking some last month, left them on a tree stump in the garden and hubby ran them over 
We've brambles all round the garden and they are still full of berries. |

"All gone around here, just made some Rose Hip jelly though
Thought about making that as there were lots of blackberries but 95% of them were mouldy. There were lots of rose hips though."
Not tried it before, pleasantly surprised! Had to make do with some "windfall" apples (ok, they were about to drop from the tree.....honest) as some nasty bugger had cut down the crab apple tree. Nice with duck  |

There are still some blackberries left but from what I saw today some of them won't ripen. Worth a walk out though but wear wellies and old clothes as you will probably have to stretch right in to reach them.
If you pick sloes before the first frost, just put them in the freezer for a bit - instant frost! |

That`s what my sister reckons too! She used to make a cracking sloe gin but it didn`t work right unless the sloes had been through at least one frost.

Normally after a frost they get a sort of dusty covering, that's when they're supposed to be ripe. A lot of people cheat and put unripe ones in the freezer, but I don't think they're quite as good. |

18th of august I found some nice sloes and makeing sloe gin with some, hopefully also some sloe vodka, and sloe port, the blackberrys this year no more for me I can,t use brown sugar to cook them in or I won,t use it anyway now due to health but I,ll definitely miss them be it nettle stings or bramble scratches and yes august is the month to pick them. |

Taken from a winemakers forum,
Freezing the fruit breaks down the fiber that is holding it together. When it comes time to actually use the wine making fruit, you will find that the color and flavors will release from the fruit into the wine must more readily. This means you are getting more out of your wine making fruit.
Could explain why some say to pick after the 1st frost? |

For the last month I've had every intention of harvesting a large bag of brambles, today when I had the motivation to go for a quiet walk, they'd all shrivelled up, looks like theres the 2nd harvest starting to come through.
I did notice 3 other types of berries growing, I feel as though I should know what they are, but embarrassingly I do not.
Could any of you be so kind as to help identify them for me if I sent them pics? |

I think they are rosehips, elderberry & Damsons, but i could be wrong?

"Blackberries aren't traditionally eaten after Michaelmas day 29th September - sometimes called goose day. They're mostly gone from my area. "
Some older people say that "they aren`t no good after then because the witches have pee`d on them"! |
