Have just programmed the NavMan SatNav to take us a scenic route from home to our hotel in Bangor on Sunday...
Used the drag function on google to choose a good looking route then entered waypoints from that route into the SatNav..
The thing is...
Google is saying the route is 241 miles, whilst the SatNav is saying only 218 (some 10% less) 
Have often wondered about its distance measuring capability, but to be such a high number out!
Any other SatNav users find that the distance to go their device says at the start of a journey is vastly different to the what the car's milometer reads at the end?? |

I've never really looked at the mileage on the sat nav..we use it to get from A to B. That's as many miles as it takes.
Tra might decide to reverse park somewhere on the way too..that could add a couple of miles |

SOunds like the same as the broken arm....
I've noticed a few differences too between the different online mapping services...
I've come to the comclusion that Google maps is the closest mileage wise... and also hasn't sent me into any lakes/dead ends/carparks.

I will look at MS Autoroute before I configure the satnav. At least that way, if there`s problems I can re-route and let the sat nav guide me the rest of the way. |

So, you stop if you have to read the map? Must take an age like the olden days lol!
Both of our cars have Sat Nav. the newest one is 2009 and is very accurate. Compared to Google maps it is within a few miles. From here to Grantchester is actually the same on both Google and the Nav.
The other one is a 2006 version and although is very good as a system, needs disc update as roads have changed lol It shows the same journey as above to be 116 miles, so 12 miles out.
Funny thing though, two good Nav systems and I always check Google before we go...  |

have got an old sat nav and cant/wont pay more to upgrade its maps than a new one would cost so i use my nokia c7 accurate maps and great display but the speed it says i'm doing it thinks i'm driving a ferrari pulling up to the red light it said i was doing 60 and warning me about the cameras on the junction lol
anyone else use their smartphone?

Yeah, some of the Halfords "Specials" seem to be sub standard, my first one was... We have also got a Garmin and that is very good, but no where near as good as the BMW or Jaguar ones. But the price difference at purchase was mahoosive!  |

Normally sits with the OS maps to work out the most direct route, then when travelling finds the satnav always wants to take us up the motorways instead, way out of our way... Battled with it last week - she got very fiesty after we'd not taken the motorway, and gone up a new bypass that was just fields on her map as it hadn't been updated to show it - steam began to come out of her SD card slot and the bleeps were coming thick and fast... almost as many as the bleeps covering our swearing when it wasted our time on the outward journey finding us a parking spot on the M6 grrrrrr :L

I use a TomTom and it's never let me down. Would be lost without it because I have absolutely no sense of direction.
I don't know if all satnavs are the same but as long as I update the GPS regularly, which is free and only takes a couple of minutes on my iMac, then everything works perfectly. |

The trouble with 'all' sat navs is they take some interpreting. Also some use TeleAtlas maps where as some use NavTeq (which have some variance's when routes are being calculated)
I've used just about all Mobile phone/PDA Sat Nav software on(WinCE/WM6.5 &7/Android/Symbian) as well specfic devices like TomTom & Garmin.
The best software I have used is IGO 8 which is used on a lot of other devices (Becker/navigon) but has the branding removed.
To be honest Garmin XT is what I use in the car and it always gets me where I need to go. You have to make sure your maps are up to date and make sure you learn all the mapping options as they make a hell of a lot of difference to the routing.
Ovi maps is probably the best 'built in' free mapping software as it runs the same Navteq maps as the stand alone Garmin devices. |
