I've had a letter sent to my address but it's not for me. It's from prison and i know how important mail is to those incarcerated. I didn't even know it wasn't for me as there was no name, just and address. The contents are about someone possibly dying. So what do i do. Do I just send it back to the prison?

Return to sender. Also, if it's not addressed to you, why did you open it?

If there's no name on it, but his address, it is, isn't it?

I've no idea, I chuck away or return to sender any mail without my name on it.

As above, that's fair enough. I still won't open anything not physically addressed to me though.

The next thing to do is send it back to the delivery office it came from with (wrong address) wrote on front, they will then send it back to the return add if there is one,if there is no return add it gets sent to belfast to be opened,if there is a return add inside they will return it

whack it all back into an envelope and return to the prison - its human error and someone wants to let someone know whats happening - imagine if it was meant for you but nobody sent it back - cant think anybody would think to do anything other than return it

Central

Return it quickly to the sender, with the front of the envelope marked 'wrong address'. I'd probably add 'Opened in error' too.

If I had ignored recent post addressed to my house i wouldn't have had advanced notification of roadworks resulting in closure of my road. I'm glad I did!

I'd return to sender. I wouldn't throw away something delivered to the wrong address. It might be important.

With something as important as the contents of that letter..I think I would have tried to contact the prison by telephone to let them know.

Then hopefully they could correct the mistake and contact the person who needs to know.

Lob it in the bin.... But remember the recycle bin, only complete tools would throw letters in the non recyclable bin.... Oh and maybe shred it first

I open all mail that comes to my house even if its addressed to the previous occupants.

If its not important I throw it away. If it is I use it for gossip

The letter should have the prisoners number on it and the prisons address it was sent from. I open all mail that goes through my box, I don't even check if it's addressed to me

I'm not the only one guilty of that then. You'll read further down that I acknowledged that error.

Why? Is it most likely intended for you, no name means it is addressed to the house itself. Its your house therefore its your mail. It could be important, as someone above posted it could be notices from the council or a number of other things you need to be informed about. Could even be that someone forgot to put YOUR name on the envelope.
