Eclectic & Obscure Music
Jump to: Newest in thread
Lots of music threads talking about classic rock or mainstream pop. I love a lot of this but there's so much more out there. My tastes are eclectic & often obscure so what do you recommend that most people won't have heard?
To start... best gigs I've seen or best albums I've heard in last two years include
Anna Meredith
Floating Points
Bathymetry
Astrïd & Rachel Grimes
Colin Stetson
The Comet Is Coming
Trembling Bells
Noura Mint Seymali
Ifriqiyya Electrique

Good thread
I only know The Comet Is Coming from that list, thought the album was pretty good but I'm not a huge jazz fan (Sun-ra and a bit of Miles covers it!) I do like spacey/cosmic music though so it hit those spots.
Big fan of Gnod, very diverse band who incorporate unsettling ambience, industrial, post-punk, spoken word... they do tend toward the more brutal side of things!
Recently been listening to James Johnstone's solo album (very Nick Cave, unsurprising as he's an ex-bad seed!) and Alan Vega's posthumous album, both great in their own way.

I've seen Gnod a few times. I do like them live though possibly not what I'd play in the car. Have you come across a vaguely related band called Water? |

Fair enough. I've also seen bands like Maiden and Pixies recently too.
Have you heard Cabbage yet? I'm in two minds about them, saw them live and they're a mixed bag but getting there.
Also Cowtown, The Moonlandingz, Lovely Eggs might be up your street. |

Not sure what Gnod album you listened to exactly but for rock/metal/punk you can't go wrong with the albums 'chaudelande' & the new one which is called something like 'just say no to the right wing fascist capitalist death machine' (what a title! )

Love The Moonlandingz album
Couldn't get into Cabbage, they're ok i suppose and i liked 'tell me lies about Manchester' but the rest is a bit indie-schmindie for me.
Unfortunately I rarely get out to gigs these days although I am going to see Sleaford Mods and Algiers (pretty awesome electro, hip hop, motown, post-punk hybrid, very political) in the coming months.

Those are pretty well known though. Not quite my usual thing but ok at festivals.
Do you know Henge? |

"I've just found an old Nectarine #9 CD.. now that's obscure to say the least "
I don't have any of their albums just stuff on Creeping Bent compilations along with likes of Secret Goldfish. Ex Fire Engines I think?

No not heard Water, I'll check them out I know there's many Gnod associated side projects but not had time to check them all out. VANISHING is a good one though that paddy from gnod did with a vocalist. Very apocalyptic, sounds like 'Threads' the tv drama reinterpreted as music! Again, not one for the car maybe
Admittedly a shameless plug for a mates band here but Monster Island have just released a new EP on bandcamp (pay what you want) called 'the new vernacular', if you're into The Fall, The Birthday Party, Cab Voltaire etc... it might be up your street. They're great live but a bit hit and miss on record to be honest, this new EP is great all the way through though.

David Thomas Broughton is always good for a bit of eclecticism. Big fan of Loney Dear too check out Airport Surroundings and I am John. The Phantom Band are well worth a listen as are Man of Moon and The Twilight Sad. |

"Daniel O'Sullivan of SunnO))) new solo album is sensational "
Not sure I've gotten off on the wrong foot with sunnO))). I've got Helloween & the Scott walker collaboration, not mad keen on them but unsure as to whether they're the best starting points for a beginner, wondered if you knew a better gateway album?

Martyn Bennett and his album Grit, the track Blackbird particularly. Superb cross between traditional Gaelic music and beats and electonica. Really worth a listen. |

"Dead Can Dance, worth a listen. I have every album they've ever produced, and one by Lisa Gerrard too.
Hardly obscure & unknown though."
So what's your criteria for obscurity? |
