I'm down there for work Wednesday evening this week - does anybody have any suggestions of places to go that might be more exciting than going to the gym then sitting on my own in a pub?

Not much in Rugby mate.

I can recommend some good pubs though.

Bacco lounge is open quite late but that's more of a cafe place that does serve alcohol. Unfortunately there isn't a massive amount to do around rugby
