Its really not dude. Fruit, veg and meat is way cheaper than your convenience foods. You just need to prep it yourself
Its the healthier ready meals that are more expensive |

This.
Also while it can feel more expensive in the supermarket it's easy to forget how much you waste on a daily basis on junk. |

"How much are you spending a week now ? And how much when you are unhealthily ?
unhealthily a week... About £10 at the most
Healthy a week... About £30 "
What a week, on food?? How do you manage that? |

To be fair it can be more expensive to start with. Especially of you don't have all of the store cupboard staples.
A friend of mine cooked us a slimming world curry the other night but had to spend £15 on spices to put in it.
People who work out cost per portion are clever in assuming everyone has organic wold truffle oil in their cupboard so can safely assume that the coat for making a meal is a fraction of the cost for the staple ingredients. |

I'm guessing you meen the £10 a week.
Most of the food is from Iceland. And body in bolk.
Eg 8 chicken brests for £2.50
12 Potato waffles for £1
Stuff like that
And then thar is the free extra stuff....
My job... I get free pizzas at times.
And my local casino gives out free bacon sandwiches and free drinks of cola almost every morning. |

I do agree, it's sad that for a fiver you can get as many cakes to feed an office. I know from recent experience, trays of doughnuts.
Fruit doesn't go as far with similar expenditure |

Where are you shopping? Aldi and Lidl always have a selection of fruit and vegetables on special offer usually at 69p approximately the cost or less than a doughnut or mars bar . Most of the big supermarkets now try and compete with them. |

You're a chef aren't you _eeside?
Eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive. You just have to know where and what to buy.
Frozen veg like peppers and spinach are much cheaper than fresh and last forever.
Chicken can be bought from trade places for half the price of even the cheapest supermarkets.
Bulk cooking and freezing food like chilli, stews etc reduces prep time and cost and makes it easy to grab something if you're in a rush.

I think you also gave to change the mindset
Eating fresh prepared food doesn't need to be expensive (believe me I can't afford it to be!)
However I prepare all my own stuff
I don't make copies if fast food I opt for recipes that produce a higher yield.. split it freeze it.
Take it as an opportunity to try new things. |

Find a bulk supplier. Not a butcher. You can get quality chicken breast as cheap as £3/kilo of you know where to look. Then just freeze it |

The homemade mac & cheese provides 4 meals, not one.
Meal planning is the key. As said above, buy in the dried goods then top up with fresh veggies etc. My monthly food bill is about £50 and I spend an afternoon planning what I need.
Ready meals are a false economy, and are not healthy. They might be low fat but they're full of salt and sugar. |

My other half is Dutch and does all the shopping. "Going Dutch" now makes sense to me.
He gets excited, No word of a lie, calculating how much our meals costs. I can make a dinner from scratch, meat and two veg, fresh herbs and spices for less than £3 a plate.
The other half doesn't buy crap...weekly shop: fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, toiletries etc £30. |

Yes, it is. We have time to shop around so we use Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury and Marks and Spencer. You don't have that luxury so I would say try Aldi and Lidl. Do things like make a list and have a rough idea of the meals you're going to make. |

Aldi and Lidl tend to have very rapid checkouts and you have to put the stuff back in your trolley then move away to pack it in bags. |

I know you don't have a lot of time but some greengrocers are cheap and cheerful too.
I won't lie.
I've never been in a aldi.
Think its time to change shops.
Make sure you are mentally prepared tm for the packing arrangements!
Don't no wot that is ment to meen but ok
Aldi and Lidl tend to have very rapid checkouts and you have to put the stuff back in your trolley then move away to pack it in bags."
Ok

Try and switch to more complex carbs rather than the simple ones, e.g brown bread instead of white not only will it keep you fuller for longer as they are slower digesting but its better for your body too.
12 pieces of food is far better for you than 12 donuts so if your on a health kick too its pointless excercising if your going to eat the wrong foods as you wont have the fuel to maintain the regime, google "skinny fat" and you will see what happens if you dont eat right and exercise.

"To be fair it can be more expensive to start with.

Seaside now what you need to do is work one day less a week so you can trapse from shop to shop to get all the good deals including going to farm shops and local butchers etc. Buy a bigger flat to house the various freezers you need to freeze the food you have bought in bulk plus a sun room in order to grow the potatoes and lettuces you now need to grow
Although my huge experience of growing potatoes is that they grow much better outside in the ground than in a bag in the bedroom, the same for lettuces.
We find that buying decent basic food from Tescos and cooking basic meals works best for us. We eat very well and with good basic fresh food but all bought from one shop cus i have no wish to trapse round several shops looking for 'bargins' after a full days work. |

Seaside you are in a much better position than most people who are trying to eat healthily. As a chef you have the skills to cook proper meals.
I think you need to shop smarter, plan your meals and batch cook and freeze.
Invest in some food containers like they use in takeaways, you can get them from the pound shops. Cook 3 or 4 servings and portion the leftovers up and put in your freezer. They will take up less room than the boxed ready meals you buy and you can reheat them in the microwave.
Try eating less meat. The better quality meat is more expensive so if you want to have it then have less. Pack your meals with vegetables instead and maybe try a meat free day once a week. Whenever I make spaghetti bolognese I use the best mince but a smaller pack than the cheap stuff. I grate carrots and courgettes into it to make it go further and it's an easy way to get your 5 a day. I don't make meat curries anymore. I do a vegetable and chick pea curry instead.

Freezer is the answer, if you come and pick them you can have 2 or 3 hundred apples from my garden right now for free, so much cheaper than doughnuts. End of June I gave away about 15 kilos of strawberries and raspberries. In season veg from farm shops are cheap, out of season imported or greenhouse stuff is always going to be expensive, but if you freeze it and use it when it's available it's ok.
Eating healthy on a budget is eating preserved or eating in season. |

A healthy diet is not expensive!
I do slimming world and it really irritates me when people say it's expensive. The key is to completely change your mindset about how you shop, cook and eat. Buy good quality lean protein, e.g. 5% fat mince. Use less of it and replace some with vegetables or pulses to stretch your budget.
For example a ready meal lasagne to feed a family would cost a fiver. A pack of good mince, if you shop smart, is £3.00 add a few herbs, a tin of tomatoes, an onion, a carrot, homemade white sauce (bit of butter, flour and milk) and some value range lasagne sheets. Total cost less than £4.00. As a single person I used to make this and freeze 3 portions, homemade ready meals.
Seeside you gave mac and cheese as an example. Smart price pasta instead of macaroni 30p. The sauce is a bit of butter, flour and milk and then some cheese. I can make the sauce for about a pound. Where you get the idea that it costs a tenner I have no idea! I can do it for about £1.50 and serve 6! |

I once lived with two veggies who were brilliant cooks. I ate like a queen. One night we came in from the pub and all we had was a potato and half an onion. 20 minutes later one of them had produced a lovely curry. Cheaper than a bag of chips.
Importantly, they told me that being veggie is not just about giving up meat. You have to know how to replace it. So tell your right-on kids they're not veggie until they know how to do it properly. |

This sounds like the opening line of a joke! I have a vegetarian, a vegan and a carnivore so I am cooking a variety of healthy meals. My grocery shop is not exuberant but the only local place I can get a decent selection of vegan staples is expensive but I still come in on budget as the prepared crap is dearer and not tasty or healthy. If I want midweek convenience fast meals I cook them on the weekend. So far today I have a Dahl curry and a beef stew made.
We have fresh salads nearly daily but very seldom use lettuce as salad can be great for using up stuff plus great for adding seeds and protein to.
If you are trying to improve your health on a budget, preparing the food yourself is the way to go.
Good luck |

Surely the clique must take some of the blame.
Can't be that processed foods often contain garbage ingredients that makes them cheap |

No you are not making sense .
Although there is a case for pom juice , you should only consume a small amount so a 500 ml should last a week , nut s are expensive per kg but one should eat about 30 g per day
Good quality meat should have a little fat and should be eaten again in moderation , non cult fish like hake and mackerel are super cheap and very healthy
I think you need to study more and protest less |

"if you decide to have pomegranite and walnuts in your diet - dont be moaning about the expense - you can be just as healthy without "
Agreed. There are many diets that don't include high cost items, so you can manage costs even better by removing those items.
A healthy adult does not need supplements. Whatever is in pomegranate juice and walnuts will be just as easily found elsewhere. |
