Much appreciated

Depends what you are looking for and interested in.

Van Gogh museum amd Body Worlds are my recommendations. Red light district was utterly soul destroying. I suspect other people's opinions don't match mine though!

It's always colder due to the wind whipping down the streets so take more clothes than you'd expect for the weather, comfy shoes are a must and I hope you like stairs!

NEMO - the science museum was a good place to go

Other than that I've been to family friendly places so it depends on what you are looking for

'Daddy why is that lady stood there in her underwear' was not a conversation I wanted to have

Visit the Rijksmuseum

Rent a bike for the day - gear fun

Ride through vondlepark

The Heineken experience is great

Try out some of the smaller cafes (normal cafes) the food is great

We spent a night in the red light district and found it a bit boring to be honest, we went to see one of the live sex show and found it boring.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.. In all honesty, I'm a bit of a museum and architecture bore and enjoy going 'cultural'

So don't speak German, wrap up well and get a bike.. Got it!

Yes. Re the German thing. Let me tell you a story.

A few years ago I was staying in a very nice John Lennon repeated hotel. Let my phone in the room by accident.. on the bed.

Came back after a long days adventuring to find it gone. Reported to the hitel.. nothing to be found.

Went to the police to report it in order to get a crime number for the insurance.

Desk Sgt was a very tall blonde super cop.. yes I would have let her search me!

Her English was sub par.. I have very little dutch.. so attempted to give my statement in German.. the look on her face said it all. She said 'we are not keen on German things here'

i used to live in a squat in zeedijk in the 80's .... to be honest the city has been slowly sucked dry of most of the fun that can be had leaving it as a husk of what it was .... it's just another overly expensive generic euro city that is well practiced in emptying the pockets of tourists

I stayed in a hostel and the advice I was given was to go out briefly visit the red light district then start walking and get lost you find more in that city when you're just wondering around

If you're in to culture take the number 6 tram out to Museumplein. The Van Gogh Museum is excellent and the Rijksmuseum's supposed to be brilliant, too. Amsterdam's brilliant when you catch it on a good day, when you're with the right company, and when you're in the right frame of mind. I have never been disappointed with Dan Haag - maybe go there instead?

There are a lot of Dutch jokes involving Germans and bikes - they chant at German fans "Give us all our bikes back". ( You'll see "Mijn fiets terug" printed on t-shirts too) .

Get a canal trip - the hop on, hop off was good. The big market near the Heineken tour is also worth a visit.

Red Light. It was curious. Not hugely sexy, but not sleazy. There are windows right across Amsterdam, but I think the further you get from the centre....

We went to a sex show. Very Dutch - all above board, clean, etc. Quite entertaining (the men they pulled from the audience were hilarious, not always intentionally) but more clinical than very sexy. Glad we went though. Been trying to persuade Her to write like one of the performers did but to no avail!

Just landed (glad I brought a coat) quick pint of Heineken before I get the tram to my hotel. Everyone is really friendly so far, and full of smiles..

Lets do this!!

Don't forget the Heineken experience, it's well worth a trip. Everything is within walking distance, Amsterdam isn't as big as I expected

Make sure you have an Argentinian steak

Enjoy it

It's ace, I've been many times, had a friend living there.

My favourite things:

The Rijksmuseumin... Sit in front of Rembrandt's "Night Watch" and soak it in, it's flipping awesome

Eat Falafel, they are Delicious

Do a daytime canal trip and check out the beautiful architecture

If you get chance, hop on a train and do a trip to Haarlem, Gouda and Volendam, it's so worth it.

Veel Plezier

I can't agree more with just wandering the streets/canals as it's a great city.

The Anne Frank Museum is also worth a visit.

I used to live in Holland. ..just a heads up ...their laws are more lenient in most cases to ours (if you get my drift )but if you break them they come down on you like a ton of bricks! X

The Lookout is worth a visit. There's a free ferry behind Centraal Station that takes you over. Great bar at the top with stunning views of the city and a swing on the rooftop that goes out over the edge!

Great market to the South East (East of the I Amsterdam monument). Can't remember the name but great for local foods and souvenirs are dirt cheap.

Stay away from the sweet/cake shops that look like kebab houses. Stale and expensive!

Cakes take longer to kick in as opposed to a joint!

Look out for bikes!!!

Peep show is weird, but for €2, worth a peep

Don't take pics of the girls in the RLD.

As far as I remember you can't smoke cigarettes in doors ,but you can smoke the funny stuff, now you can smoke out doors but you can't smoke the fun stuff outside.

Oh there's a pizza cruise and a hamburger cruise. Around £30 each

But that was nearly two years ago.

Amsterdam is such a great place to visit, so much to do and amazing architecture to see. Been there 6 times and counting and only had my passport nicked once - don't trust the cleaners with anything.

Definitely recommend Leidseplein - great day or night.

Pizza cruise is a nice way to spend a few hours and see the sights.

Bloemenmarkt flower market is worth a visit and there are some good shops for tut in the nearby Singel area.

Vondelpark is great on a sunny day but don't enter after dark.

Have some special cake, then an hour later find a cafe on the way down to the red light district. Sit outside eating ham and cheese toasties and people watch
