Was in Florida in 2011 and on hurricane alert. Luckily enough it changed direction and skirted the coast. There was a few deaths from people thinking it was ok to carry on swimming in the sea. But yes it was very scary at the time as we did have some bad weather but not the full force.

My friend is there at the moment and has been offered early flights home at the weekend x

Playing it by ear. The shops have been emptied as everyone stocks up. Even watching it off the coast was a scary thing, so wouldn't want to be in the middle of it x

scary............. and it's always baffled me why people choose to go on holiday to places at high risk from hurricanes during hurricane season??

Save a few kid maybe but either spend a couple of weeks effectively in a washing mac_ine - or risk death from something falling on you - it's a funny old game

Yes 26yrs ago here in the uk, i remember it waking me up and looking out the window but i couldn't see much because it was still dark outside and the streetlight wasn't working ,but in the morning there was trees and debris everywhere. I was serving on the QE2 at that time, we were just ahead of the storm for the last two days of a Transatlantic voyage. Those two days the ocean was as still as a mill pond! We docked then a few hours later the storm hit.

"Where do they get there names from? "
.

Theres a list of girls and boys names that rotate over a set number of years.

So Jose was one of about nine j names but only two were available for this year, the next one gets a girl's name of k and then a boy's name of L and so on and so on.

If the hurricane is a deadly one or very destructive they occasionally retire the name like Katrina was that hit New Orleans and probably Harvey will as well

It's always an anxious wait during hurricane season, my dad left me his house in Trinidad, so I'm watching the weather right now, irma is going to pass too far north to do any damage and it looks like José will follow the same path, mind you, if it hit my dad's house it would break the hurricane, he knew a thing or two about building a house my dad lol

feel relieved.... I have relatives on antigua and montserrat.... and looking at what happened to the poor people on barbuda and St Maarten, they dodged one hell of a bullet... got a soaking from the rain but survived!

hopefully jose will miss as well.....

florida is going to get crushed... it not a case of if but there.....

could be miami and ft lauderdale if it goes up the east.... tampa and naples if it goes up the west.... or orlando if it goes straight up the middle.....

this is florida's worst nightmare because you don't know where to run to to be safe... other than north towards atlanta!

I wasn't due to leave - spent hours online trying to get a flight. Finally booked one but getting to Miami airport was horrendous.

The airport itself was even worse - missed my flight but bought one of the last few tickets available to anywhere that wasn't £5000 plus etc.

Miami airport was like a disaster zone - days before the hurricane. Got escorted through to the front of security - saving hours of lining up, then spent several more hours until the first flight that had one seat free.

Several flights later I'm in the west coast of the USA. Pity the people who have not managed to leave

The whole general area is getting battered by nature at the moment.

Just had a big hurricane. One heading to Florida and currently flattening half of Cuba, another to Mexico and a third on its way. Hopefully Jose will miss the majority of the islands...

To top that off a massive earthquake off the coast of Mexico.

We might complain about British weather but we never get real extremes...

nope... that bird has now basically flown.... if you are not out by now you are basically sitting this one in and praying!

my fear is that because so much of the focus has been on miami and the east coast, if it does now look like to come in slightly further west that it was that people in the likes of naples, ft mayers, sarasota, tampa/st pete and orlando dont now get crushed!

Selfishly I'd prefer to go west as they are on the east cost but either way it's going to be hideous for far too many people

I can't imagine what this will be like. I've been in a few hurricanes as a child in New York but they weren't this strong.

it will only lessen if it meets cooler water.. or it hits land.... this had really done neither! the little islands are not big enough to stop it... and in fact the eye wall has regenerated so the eye is now twice as big as it was before....

in fact... its likely to meet warmer water again after passing cuba which means the pressure will drop and will strengthen again!!

Remember flying into the Dom Rep about 20 years ago and you could see the eye of a nearby hurricane below. Really was pretty surreal.

Been caught in an earthquake and that was pretty terrible so heart goes out to those affected by the hurricane.

Kinda puts moaning about the miserable Manchester weather into perspective.

its because barbuda basically took the eye of the storm.... is in effect got battered by the stongest and worst weather twice......

because antigua is slightly south and west the winds were bad.. but not as bad it was in barbuda....

you are taking for example if naples gets a direct hit the winds will be 150 mph.... miami which is basically 100 miles up the road, may get 100mph winds....

"Not fantastic news but it has been downgraded to a cat 4...sadly that is still gusts upto 155 mph."

that can be misleading... because cat 5 starts at 157mph....

it would only take a tiny bit of strenghtening between cuba and florida in those really warm waters to regain the cat 5 label...

and the storm is actually slowing down a little which will mean it will be in the warm waters longer to get back whatever it loses over cuba

Yikes. Even if you get through the storm itself there is always the potential problem of being flooded and having no electricity etc.

At least shelters have water & provisions.
