near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

Next month, the Highways Agency( is starting work on the roundabout at Canford Bottom on the A31 near my home town of Wimborne. This roundabout regularly "stars" in the Radio 2 traffic reports and is part of the cause of all of those luvverly tail backs in the summer that go back right through the New Forest to Cadnam and the end of the M27.

The Highways Agency`s solution is to construct a "hamburger junction" with the A31 going straight through the middle and the local traffic using the roundabout in the traditional fashion with the whole lot controlled by traffic signals. They say it will all be done with the minimum of road closures ( ) and should take a mere 24 weeks

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

24 weeks? A mere snippet of time. The A1(M) between Dishforth and Leeming has had roadworks since 2009 and won't open properly til 2013!!! And thats when they start again at Catterick!

Tell me about it!! You learn to use that stretch of the A1 during non-peak times. Didn't realise they were extending from Catterick immediately though.... and it' still a long way to Newcastle if the plan is to A1(M) it all the way up.

By the time they finish it will be time to start again.

Thing is, my village cricket pitch is bigger than this bloody roundabout and it`s the second "solution" that the HA have come up with! The first was divide it up into dedicated lanes with was completely unsuccessful as no-one took any notice of them!

If I remember rightly, they have been doing work on that stretch for a lot longer than that, I used to go up to topcliffe ever week, an it always seemed that there was work going on around dishforth

Can you imagine Durham or Washington Services when that happens? I tend to come off at Aycliffe if Im coming home northward bound and take the old A1 from Eden Arms - avoids a lot of waiting. Its about time they got traffic sorted for metro from consett through Whickham too. Wee country roads not built for it.

Moan groan mumble grumble
