Sciatica advice

Hi All,

M getting some niggle from sciatica at the moment. Do any of you have any useful advice.

PS, I've tried a wank and that failed to remedy!

I suffered from this for a couple of months every day. I used to have long hot showers and do lots of moving round in the shower followed by a lot of muscle rub (wintergreen)...

I had to do 30 minutes prep each morning before I could get about, amazingly it just faded after I bought a new mattress.

Ask your gp for some exercises for it. Or see if the NHS website has anything.

You need to stretch your hamstring muscles everyday. Also hip flexors. Look on YouTube for this. Sciatica is a trapped nerve. Stretching always has helped me to help myself.

It looks bizarre, takes some practice to get right, but it really helps x

Yes it has thanks the brain. Not quite sure why but you often get snipers even on the most simple of forums

My experience is that a chiropractor will only rectify a problem temporarily, not solve the problem.

Yoga, stretching and activity worked with me.

Carrying heavy kit and being in awkward positions for ling periods did my back in. But within 2 weeks of a bit of yoga I feel so much better.

Oh my friend has it, doctor pain killers, stiff mattress, one of those buck wheat hot cushion things.

The lavander buck wheat cushion thing helps.

I would try other ways of treating before paying for a chiropractor. My sciatica started at the age of 13 and was at it's worse in my 20's and 30's. There are many things you can do to ease the pain. I rarely suffer now, and when I do it's usually mild and not long lasting. You have to find what works for you.

Go to your gp ... you may need some anti inflammatory medication.... gp should send you for an assessment with a physiotherapist ... you may need an MRI scan to see what the exact problem is ...

Sciatica is a symptom .... not the actual problem ...

Ive just been down this path

Now waiting to see consultant at orthopaedic clinic ...

keep mobile and back exercises do help .... good luck OP .

i tried telling my doctor I had a stomach ulcer.was told at 21 I couldint have.even when I got taken to hospital the guy in the ambulance treated me like I was and idiot and just hungover.turns out i had a perforated ulcer not much bigger the size of a pinhead.If I left it it would have been fatal.it was weird it was like my body was telling me what was wrong so sometimes its right to just go with your gut.....well in this instance stomach lol.

Not a doctor, but as others have mentioned sciatica is from a trapped nerve. What you generally have is an overdeveloped muscle pressing against the nerve. People have mentioned stretching but I would also recommend a foam roller. If you use it properly it will deactivate the tonic muscle and allow it to atrophy, reducing the chance of pressing on the nerve. This plus stretching should be a good way to go.

Think you're referring to the piriformis.

Check "piriformis stretch" on YouTube and there's a load of vids. Doesn't have to be over development causing the issue, sitting for long periods (desk job) can shorten it causing the same issue. And for the sake of stretching for 3 mins a day it's well worth a try.
