Any lovers of music on Vinyl? And if so what have you been listening to recently?
Currently playing Journeyman by Goldie at suitably anti-social, speaker molesting levels. Just a good job I don't have any neighbours within earshot. |

My eleven year old lad got a record player for his birthday. He spends his free time rooting around second hand shops for obscure 60s and 70s folk albums. Christ knows where he gets that particular genre from but I'm definitely guilt for his love of music.
Recently I've been listening to Skinny Lister's latest album on his system. |

Vinyl is just hip at the moment.
But, with good reason. Mastered directly from the original tapes (before 40 yrs of corrosion/humidity/oxide brittling)..so a great sounding album will always sound great on a nice LP.
But its not always the case. CD can sound just as good...if its mastered well. Problem is modern music isn't. Its mastered for iPods, MP3 and phones to sound louder than the previous song.
But yes...expensive turntable and my original vinyl collection are a pride and joy.
This week.. I 'arrve been mostly playin' Led Zeppelin |

Vinyl is hip within a certain demographic, but there was always that core that have kept that vinyl flame burning. I started buying vinyl in the 90's and never stopped. Managed to combine my Dad's collection into mine, some lovely Pink Floyd, Moody Blues original's amongst others.
I'm not sure I agree about CD though, as well as it ever can be mastered it's still a,compressed format.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on Mogwai's new album tomorrow.

Vinyl never really went away.
Made a good come-back and glad to see it didn't suffer like A lot of other stuff that has faded away like VHS etc |

I still buy vinyl, there are three record shops in Eastbourne, one of which sells new stuff. Really into Ibibio Sound Machine, and still play a lot of my old Ninja Tune 12s. |

There was a period about 10 years ago when Berwick St really went downhill. I thought that was the end of vinyl, but it's made a resurgence. I heard a young lad, student probably, say he bought vinyl because it's retro - he didn't even have a player, just bought albums as decoration for his flat. |

Can't believe people still make claims about the sound quality
My teenage son has a few and they're nice to collect but let's be honest they sound shitter and are more hassle than listening to music on your phone. |

I'm a half way house person.
I like the old stuff, I'm listening to the doors as I type, it has a certain quality on vinyl that is missing on compressed formats.
Having said that, some days I just like to shuffle and that's not impossible on vinyl. |

Yeah that's right. Your phone must be amazing. There's a reason why people spend a grand for just a cartridge. |

I have a music room with twin decs, a mixer and huge speakers. Recently sold over 5,000 singles, a mix of Northern Soul, Tamla mowtown, funk, ska etc.as wasn't playing them but kept over 2,000 albums as love playing them. Just can't beat that sound and I love pretending to be a DJ |

"The real question is who's a valve amp man
I know a guy who spends hours locating buying and restoring those. Coz he can. " .
That needs patience and a steady hand!!
That rules me out |

There is a monthly vinyl club meeting in Ripon which has really opened my ears to loads of new stuff and a mixed demographic of people from die hard collectors to those who have just got into it.
The mixed opinions are understandable though. The cheap Argos record players are shite and do vinyl no favours. Only a decent set up does it justice.
Now,any one for reel to reel? |

CD isn't a compressed format...compression is applied to all masterings regardless of format (you wouldn't be able to keep the stylus from bouncing out of the groove if they were left with full dynamic range) but until recently 16/44.1 was the highest definition you could record to anyway (and 44.1kHz is way about the limits of human hearing anyway).
I listen to both vinyl and CD (always have) but I could make arguments for and against both formats.
I have CDs that sound much better than their vinyl equivalent and vice versa, and not all vinyl masterings are made equal. |
