Do you ever judge people on what you expect them to be?
Do you assume accountants are boring or that all black men are well endowed?
Do you with or against any stereotypes people may expect you to be?
This came from a "big girls are bubbly" conversation. I do tend to be but I think I would be the same if I was slim? |

We all have internal stereotypes or unconscious bias.
I rarely mention mine out loud. But in my head I judge people all the time. Unfortunately in work, I'm kind of paid to do that, but when it spills over into my personal life it can get messy. |

It's natural for us to make unconscious assessments of people - which will include prejudices, even if stereotyped. I prefer not to and stop myself if I notice. I've been really surprised by many people in my life - moving from a neutral perspective to intense positivity. I generally expect good things or remain neutral.
People can be cajoled into stereotypes, through constant expectations visited upon them by others, which is unfair. Much better for them to be themselves. |

That's so funny to read you say that about southerners stereotype. I've always been led to believe northerners are more chilled out and it's a cheaper cost of living up there. Well I've not long come back from a weekend in Newcastle and it was the worst and second most expensive city I've visited so far. The people I met looked down their noses at me as If i were dirt on their shoes and everything I brought (including car parking fees) was ridiculously expensive. It was as if soon as they heard my accent, I was disliked.  . The accommodation I stayed in was run by a couple of which the wife tried conning more money out of me. Honestly folks, southerners aren't all rich nor well off and we do not all live in big houses! I wish .
Fair to say, I'm never going there again! Lesson learnt. |

When people are told my name many have thought I would be some big black man, unfortunately I disappoint them when I arrive as a shortish white girl.
When I've been speaking to be people in the chatrooms and then meet them I have been shocked by a few, as they are completely different to what I assumed they would like like in person. But to make an assumption on what someone will look like from conversing it's completely weird and I don't understand why I would do, but I do and then it's nothing the way I thought. |

Yes - it's a chicken and egg thing - repeated spoken and unspoken messages from people who assist you to fulfil the prophecy. Would you have been that way without their consistent facilitation?
We're shaped by our environment , including the people around us. I'm not saying this is the major factor - but people are somewhat lazy and so we like predictability and to feel comfortable that we're in charge and are correct in our understandings of people and things. |

I try not to judge people without giving them a chance first.
I also think it is easy to judge a group, or type of people, based on stereotypes and generalisations. Both of which usually have some basis in truth.
But when meeting people face to face, or in small groups, I think we are more tolerant/less judgemental  |

Well the stereotype for me is that because I'm Asian I must be rude, demanding and disrespectful. And that's putting it nicely ha!

Like a few have said earlier, stereotyping is natural.
It's based on our personal observation and experience or even hearsay/myth etc.
I use the information to keep myself aware of the possibilities but won't hinder me from getting to know them.

I get stereotyped for being Asian but when I think of it I will stereotype right back sub consciously, its in our nature tbh and much as we shouldn't we are all guilty to some degree! |

I've spent most of my life trying to prove I'm not a stereotype.
I left school at 16, I became a teenage mum, I'm a single parent, I have 3 children.
People still assume I have no job, no prospects and my children have different dads.
Fact is I was married, I've worked damn hard and I actually have a really good job and they all have the same dad.
I hate that in this day and age those stereotypes still exist |

I try not to. There's been a lot of stereotyping over those who voted for Brexit and Trump.
Jon Stewart of the Daily Show, a hero of liberal America said:

But of course it's far more complex than that.
Leavers have been stereotyped alongside Nigel Farage, while Jeremy Clarkson campaigned for Remain but you won't find many Remainers admitting they like his brand of casual racism. |

Had a lovely evening Friday with several guys coming round to pleasure J.
Planned for 3 guys, so obviously we narrowed it down to 5 knowing there would be no-shows.

I try not to stereotype people, though as others have said we all do to some extent.
It probably helps that I have always worked with the sort of people others can look down on. The jobless, sick or homeless.
You very quickly realise that anyone can end up in these situations, and very few chose to be.
I'm also very fortunate to work with people from a variety of backgrounds, religions and races.
People are people at the end of the day and we need to do do more to see the similarities than the differences.
