We were walking aimlessly around Oxford last week looking for some shoes. Tired of trekking around the usual shops we spotted a couple of special policewomen and a policeman handing over duties or whatever so asked one of the specials if there was an independent shoe shop she could point us in the direction of.
She was about to answer when the policeman butted in with 'Yeah there are a couple - but you won't get anything fashionable there though'.
I said that was ok.
His colleague then gave us directions to a shop and this policeman again interrupted saying 'But the shoes there are VERY expensive.' I made some sort of joke about Oxford brogues from Oxford will be just the job. He then added oh right then she's right that shop is the best for you - my dad buys his brogues there too".
So in the space of about 30 seconds we had been judged, only on appearance and an innocent question, as looking for fashionable shoes, then told the shoe shop we were being directed to was probably beyond our budget but then it was decided we were on par with his dad who was probably old enough to be my dad too!
Thats policemen for you, you might say very observant (aka prone to stereotyping) as part of there jobs but are you guilty of doing the same thing? Looking at face value only and deciding a life for someone you know absolutely nothing about?
I have a colleague like that she daydreams and makes up whole life stories for people passing the window where we work - its a scream listening to some of her analysis sometimes - especially when we're never going to find out if her character assessment was right or wrong.
We all people watch - the point is that no sane person would ever go up and tell a person what they thought of them merely from a passing glance or very little information.
Gut instinct is a good thing for a policeman to have when solving crimes but to think he had us all 'figured out' in the space of a few seconds kinda brings it home that innocent people can be earmarked because of preconception.
So just for fun. You're in a pub. A bloke of about 45 to 55 wearing smart trousers, bit of a beer belly, hair slightly waxed back and curled around his ears walks over to the juke box. He is joined by a tall girl of about 17 in leggings and a floaty top head bowed over an iphone. He asks her to select. A couple of blokes he is with shout out their selection. One is about 37 in a dark t shirt and skinny jeans and has a leather wristband and big silver watch on, converse on his feet. The other is the same age but is in chinos and a denim shirt, close cropped hair and a gold stud in one ear. The barmaid who is about 42, about 5ft tall wearing a flared skirt with a tight black belt, very high heeled red shoes, bright green eyeshadow and bobbed blonde hair asks him to put her choice on too.
Based on the info above.... name 5 songs and artists you imagine they chose between them and why. |

"I think if they had to read through that thread they would probley have chosen killing me softly"
Nobody has to read anything. Nobody has to do anything. Its personal choice. You do have the choice not to be rude to fellow posters efforts too. |

Some a death metal song, a hiphop song, a trance song, a country&western song and a michael Jackson song.
Everyone loves Michael Jackson
But back to the first paragraph. Do you think that saying "Thats policeman for you" was a correct generalisation for all the policeman based on the actions of ONE policeman was fair?
Kinda hypocritical based on the circumstances dont you think? |

If I had thought that and written it as my personal opinion then absolutely. But I didn't - its written in rhetoric and in the third person. |

Is that lacking rhetoric or are you just telling it how it is in your experience. We (the royal one) like a bit of clarity

Sorry for my lack of clarity. On reflection. Both. I'm glad we were able to discuss this in an open adult fashion. I thank you for the day... but thats just another of my Kinks |

"I think we are all judged by the things we say and they way we look....and i think most of us are guilty of doing so, i was once asked if i slept upside down like a bat!!! "
Oh I agree I just wouldnt dream of airing my assumptions like the policeman did. Its ok to think and form opinions but as youre more than likely to be way off the mark its silly to voice them unless youre being outrageous and dizzy with your mates on a night out or something.
Its same as when you go shopping and you say to assistant you are looking for a certain item - and they say 'ooh thats expensive' before knowing what youre prepared to spend.. |

were you actually judged? You were obviously in a strange town, unfamiliar with the shops and their locations. You were getting directions to a shop which may suit your needs but of which you had no prior knowledge and being of indeterminate wealth was the copper trying to help in the description of the shop, forewarning you of the shops prices or helping you to decide whether it was worth going to find the shop in the first place.
Maybe in your misunderstanding of the policeman's motivations in giving you that information you have misjudged him in misjudging you. |

"I dont think anyone of us hasnt at sometime judged someone else based on very few things. Its only when you get more indepth you can start to form an opinion based on fact."
