Seriously, these are classed as a luxury item and are taxed at 5%

some shops have knocked the tax off (ie. they're paying it) but people are campaigning for sanitary products to be completely free.

In a recent appeal from our Church, we were asked to donate toiletries, including sanitary towels

Not quite sure I've understood and maybe I've misinterpreted this, but it appears you're suggesting that tampons ARE a 'luxury' item and in the same category as fags, vaping fluid or alcohol?! If so I'm stunned!

MP Philip Davies is an interesting person to look into on issues like this. His filibustering meant the issue wasn't discussed I parliament. He's filibustered on a number of issues too and voted for some very strange things!

It's an absolute disgrace women don't get them free. I cannot believe how the government got away with it. Periods are vile but they're natural and an absolute necessity to life and continuation of the human race (until trans can bear kids) so women shouldn't have to pay a dime for sanitary towels. Most people didn't think it was acceptable. But the tax was set by eu rules and the uk couldnt change it.

That changed a year or so back and after some negotiations with the eu were allowed to. It will fall to 0% next year I think.

Did you mean to be so offensive? For a start guess what *women* pay tax too, and, as has already been pointed out razors are VAT free so who, exactly, is making up the shortfall there ?

Furthermore, it's not as simple as stating 'tampons are £1.50'. Unless you have periods yourself which I somehow doubt, individual women can pay far far more than that every month depending on how heavy and how long their periods are - and different brands, at different prices, many more than £1.50, suit different women because, surprise, we're all different.

Even if you could get away with spending £1.50 a month there are many women - including some who work in low paid jobs - living right on the poverty line whose choice is food (e.g. for their kids) or sanitary protection. Where every last penny makes a real difference. Or women being financially abused.

Some women can barely afford to feed the children. A 5% tax on sanitary products, as a luxury item, is unacceptable

Just as if there was a tax on razor blades would not be acceptable

Nobody stated that they want the price lowered or want these for free

Cheaper alternatives can make your lady bits itch and don't fit your knickers as well. Also they don't stick as well. Some products use perfumes that can also course irritations. I choose the more expensive ones because I'm in a very lucky position some ladies are not so lucky.

What about diva cups .99pence all you pay,, tampons cost £1.50 hmm the vat is nothing much on that!! It's your choice what you use but it really doesn't cost that much, oh and who will make the money back on the free vat - tax payers so we end up paying for you

If the government is going to do something it should be to abolish prescription charge on meds people actually need!!

Or women being financially abused."

I don't mean to sound offensive but I do get peed off with people wanting expecting to have things cheaper for them because they can't help it!!! If anyone should get things for free it's the people who really need it,, not the I can save pennies on tampons,,, what about those who really need the help - homeless!!

"Please someone define to me and everyone else where the line is on this discussion, why they are a luxury?? Why they should be cheaper, why should this not be extended to people with other conditions that they can not help why must it be just tampons - how this will be funded?? How the general public will end up paying for it out of taxes, this may be a typical blokes response but I don't have periods but my other half does and she doesn't understand why some people find it hard going paying for these items and yes we are not rich at all"

a luxury item is something you can do without. to charge VAT (VALUE added tax) to them, no matter at what level implies that they are something a woman can do without. this is incorrect.

i dont think they should be provided free as, depending on the brand you buy, they can be as little as £1

for balance....pitta bread does not have VAT added to it.

The items you have listed as 'essential' such as razors, contact lenses and laser correction surgery are ridiculous and show you do not understand the matter at all.

Ask your Mrs if she could go without her tampons or pads next month as they are a luxury and money is tight so you need to drop all luxury items! i'm sure she would be happy to.

i'm one of the people who claimed poverty and so was someone else. mine was in the past when poundshops didn't exist but even so i know for a fact some people can have literally nothing to live off to this day.

just coz you've never experienced it don't pretend it doesn't happen. it does.

by invalidating someone elses experiences of poverty you really are not helping anyone.

i know people who have benefits stopped for no reason. i know people on very little wage who have to pawn their stuff to buy food and then run out of stuff to pawn.

a lot of people are too proud to 'beg' or don't even know where to get charity help from but this country does not give all of it's people access to enough money to live on at all. don't deny it.

whilst i have never been in a situation where i could not buy my own sanitary products i do find it hard to believe that there is such a thing as 'period poverty'is a thing when you can buy packs of tampons for £1.

Poverty is bandied around too much these days. Sanitary products are cheap and only needed a few days a month, there are reusable products on the market which for an initial slightly larger outlay would save money in the long run.

"

Mooncups are around £20. Yes they're reusable and thankfully most of us could afford to buy them if we wanted. Can you not imagine though living in genuine poverty where it's literally impossible to put aside even £2 a month to save up for one of these items? There are all sorts of things where a higher initial outlay would save money in the long run but if you're truly poor that outlay is impossible in the first place.

The initial comment was about these items being subject to VAT because they are considered a luxury item. It's gone off at a bit of a tangent now.

Clearly, they are not a luxury product. Even if they are a necessity, they are not a luxury.

I honestly don't really care if tampax become free for women, doesn't effect my life. I think at least tax should be removed

But if tampax become free? What's next? Should soap become free? Shower gel? After all are they not all hygiene products

i lved the pics i saw on this. and how i haven't heard of it before now i'll never know. thanks.

but i found this comment, which claims:

Ultimately, “[r]ats may suffer from crowding; human beings can cope," Ramdsen says. "Calhoun’s research was seen not only as questionable, but also as dangerous.” Another researcher, Jonathan Freedman, turned to studying actual people — they were just high school and university students, but definitely human. His work suggested a different interpretation. Moral decay could arise “not from density, but from excessive social interaction,” Ramsden says. “Not all of Calhoun’s rats had gone berserk. Those who managed to control space led relatively normal lives.”

When the finance bill was presented it was rejected by our MPs unfortunately and that would have forced a negotiation with the EU for a reduction of the 5% VAT. There wasn't much in the numbers which was what surprised me the most. The fact that they can be considered a luxury is the issue.

" is it both the interms ones and the pads that are taxed or just the internal ones and pads are vat free?"

Unless you've experienced really heavy periods, you can have no understanding of why this comment is totally irrelevant.

It matters why?

Sanitary products are a necessity, unless everyone accepts blood running down legs for five days to week EVERY month. I'm usually calm, but seriously. This really grits my shit..... That's terrible, I've never given it much thought as a man. I believe Scotland are going to make them free in public buildings, schools, libraries etc. So they should be, they're a necessity not a luxury.

whilst i have never been in a situation where i could not buy my own sanitary products i do find it hard to believe that there is such a thing as 'period poverty'is a thing when you can buy packs of tampons for £1.

like i say, i know i have been fortunate not to be in a position where i have not had to scrimp for every penny

Poverty is bandied around too much these days. Sanitary products are cheap and only needed a few days a month, there are reusable products on the market which for an initial slightly larger outlay would save money in the long run.

A few days! I've been on my period for four weeks now and counting. All this has cost me extra money in buying my taxed sanitary products "

And I thought I was bad at 2 weeks at a time

I'm one of those. I sometimes have periods twice in a month because of 'womanly problems'. It is quite depressing, painful and they can be very heavy. Definitely not a luxury item.

I think this is indicitive of the divide and conquer method of ruling that we see in this country all too often now.

Whether you think sanitary products are a LUXURY which should be taxed as such is the big issue. That in Britain today in 2017 we still have people who believe they are is abhorrent to me.

Your contact lenses are of course very important to you and necessary. But if you weren't able to afford them and had to revert to nhs glasses would you have to suffer similar humility walking down the street? The hygiene issues and the social stigma is appaling.

Perhaps look at it and think if it was your mother, sister, partner or daughter who couldn't afford them would you be so flippant?

There are people dying in this country as a result of sanctions and the aggressive pursuit of the poor. Ex-servicemen being found dead beside a pile of CVs with no food in their stomach is a damning indictment on us all.

I would suggest anyone who thinks this is all media lies or bad individual choices of how to deal with finances watch the wonderful Ted Talk by Jack Monroe. So insightful and so terrifying.

I think they are a luxury item not a necessity. I've never found sanitary protection that works for me so i don't use it. Yes what you buy in tesco or wherever may be better than the alternative but it's not essential.

I have to pay 60 quid per contact lens and thats not a choice as my vision defect can't be corrected by glasses. Without them i can't drive or work so they are more essential to me than tampons.

That being said there is a load of nonsense around what is vat rated and what isn't. childrens clothes: not taxed. Adult clothes are a luxury item?

Razors are not taxed

Not every woman can afford that much money and it is not just a fiver when you have heavy periods

- Mrs. J -

PS. Razors can be reused; I see him using the same razor for days. Sanitary towels are not reusable

What about contact lenses which I need!! Cost me £15 a month for a defect in my eyes, not my fault but I need them - should I get the government to pay for them p.s I work but hey what the hell"

A pair of glasses from the opticians I work at costs as little as £25. Spectacles are a necessity, contact lenses are not!

"Please someone define to me and everyone else where the line is on this discussion, why they are a luxury?? Why they should be cheaper, why should this not be extended to people with other conditions that they can not help why must it be just tampons - how this will be funded?? How the general public will end up paying for it out of taxes, this may be a typical blokes response but I don't have periods but my other half does and she doesn't understand why some people find it hard going paying for these items and yes we are not rich at all

a luxury item is something you can do without. to charge VAT (VALUE added tax) to them, no matter at what level implies that they are something a woman can do without. this is incorrect.

i dont think they should be provided free as, depending on the brand you buy, they can be as little as £1

for balance....pitta bread does not have VAT added to it.

The items you have listed as 'essential' such as razors, contact lenses and laser correction surgery are ridiculous and show you do not understand the matter at all.

Ask your Mrs if she could go without her tampons or pads next month as they are a luxury and money is tight so you need to drop all luxury items! i'm sure she would be happy to."

Getting slightly annoyed reading his responses and can't be bothered to type a reply cos he's just not getting it but you've basically said what I wanted to say!!

Reading this thread has made me so sad that some people have less than £3 to spend on something as essential as sanitary items

I have no idea about tax etc..

But it appears to be minimal.

I dont think anything should be free.

We shouldn't sit back and get over it, we should challenge it. They are not a luxury item.

I'm not talking about getting anything for free or expecting others to pay. I am saying they are not a luxury item and therefore should not be subject to VAT.

Use the cup? That has seriously made me laugh and they also are a vat rated item.

well said..

When our son went to Uni we were fortunate to help him out financially each month with living expenses etc, 3 years later we did the same with his sister but we increased it for this very reason..

sanitary products are not a luxury and that in 2017 in any country women are having to go without food in order to buy such essentials is shameful..

there was an article on 5 live and also women's hour that covered this and that some girls will skip school when their period is happening and as they can't afford sanitary products so they use tea towels or other means ..

This is the first time i have heard of mooncups .

They are not without problems - they could be problematic with IUD wearers. Or for women who have a tilted uterus (towards rectum instead of bladder. Mine tilts to the left ermmmm....).

It states it holds more than tampons but doesn't state it could handle the Niagara falls.

I'm glad you've found a solution which works for you but, as you say, it wouldn't be suitable for every woman, for myriad reasons. I'd happily take the pill non stop to have no periods but at my age, the choice of pill available to me is now restricted ... though I do manipulate the timing of my periods a fair bit with noreth6isterone (for which I have to jump through hoops) so I can 'enjoy' the 'luxury' of using sanitary protection at a time when they'll have least impact. In one way or another countless other women also do similar (e.g. using drugs or IUDs), trying to lessen the effect of something which, although completely natural, can be a literal and metaphorical pain ... luxurious it ain't! It's the *principle* of the powers that be decreeing that our unavoidable efforts to keep clean, hygienic and (relatively) comfortable is a 'luxury' which is so fucking insulting and patronising

Do you just bleed into your clothing during a period?

I have never found a method of SP that worked. After years of ruined mattresses and always having to wear black trousers and sit on towels for the inevitable leakage from towels or 'leak proof' period pants..i can't use tampons or cups...I gave up and I take the pill so I just don't get periods. Not a solution for everyone but my life is so much better now.

Are nappies a luxury item? If not, why? Nappies and sanitary protection have followed the same evolutionary path. They also attempt to contain a human waste product that is expelled by automatic processes. So I'll ask again, are nappies a luxury item?

"Seriously, these are classed as a luxury item and are taxed at 5%

- Mrs. J -"

You can sign a petition on Change.org to change this. Rather than wait until 2019 for the government to change this, major supermarkets are being petitioned to pick up the tax tab. It's working.

I couldn't find nappies but ironically incontinence pads are 0% VAT. Many types of incontinence can be corrected medically or simply strengthening the pelvic floor muscles... I'm dumbfounded at the logic. Could it truly be a a biological sex thing?

They should not be taxed..it's wrong. I can see why they do tax them, because they are essential and not a luxury. So they become a guaranteed tax income.

I will throw my tampon at him. Then pick it back up again because they are bloody expensive you know! "

So you can re-use them!

Seriously though, it is ridiculous that they are considered a luxury item.

"Wow unless your homeless can't believe anyone would do these things just to save a fiver!! Yet I bet if your a smoker you still bought fags or vaping fluid,, if your a drinker you still bought a drink!!!

Razors are not taxed

Not every woman can afford that much money and it is not just a fiver when you have heavy periods

- Mrs. J -

PS. Razors can be reused; I see him using the same razor for days. Sanitary towels are not reusable

What about contact lenses which I need!! Cost me £15 a month for a defect in my eyes, not my fault but I need them - should I get the government to pay for them p.s I work but hey what the hell

You can claim glasses back on the NHS. You choose to have the luxury of contacts. Women don't choose to have to bleed every month.

What about diva cups .99pence all you pay,, tampons cost £1.50 hmm the vat is nothing much on that!! It's your choice what you use but it really doesn't cost that much, oh and who will make the money back on the free vat - tax payers so we end up paying for you

If the government is going to do something it should be to abolish prescription charge on meds people actually need!!

they do. if you have a prescription for something your body cannot make but cannot do without you get a medical exemption certificate. i get one for my diabetes medication that i am hoping to hand back soon"

I have exemption for thyroid medication it's a lifelong condition and will never go unfortunately

Sanitary products aren't medication. Are prescriptions taxed as a luxury item?

Spain, Lancs

VAT is an EU tax and the UK go vt has mo option but to charge it.

When we leave the EU we will have the freedom to either charge VAT on sanitary items or not.

People can then campaign to have the tax dropped. Good luck.

I honestly don't really care if tampax become free for women, doesn't effect my life. I think at least tax should be removed

But if tampax become free? What's next? Should soap become free? Shower gel? After all are they not all hygiene products

(Unprofessional opinion/question)

OP didnt suggest anything should be free!

I know, but it looks like they could become free in Scotland is labour get there way"

More free stuff for the scottish! They'll still grumble

(I'm kidding - before you all kick off!)

I think the point had been well and truly made here

Why tax sanitary products as a luxury when something like caviar as the poster above suggested isn't taxed.

It's a crazy crazy mixed up world
