Its been a whle since we were all told/adviced to ditch the car...
And use the fantastic public transport we have
So have you ?
I have no choice as i dont drive , but its bloody annoying when the costs are spirraling out of control.
Rail prices are set to rise up to 8% in the new year and my local bus service is now on par with the cost of a taxi.
Where the hell is the good service we were promised ? trains that run on time would be a good start and that your able to sit on would be another..
My local bus service(arriva) only bring down costs when there is competition and promptly raises it to get their own back after the competition have departed.
Kin public transports a joke. |

Prices will go up... as fuel prices have gone up, insurance has gone up, wages have a minimum amount allowed that goes up..
Overheads on these companies are going up.. so sadly prices do to...
I dont use public transport..and dont really give a damn what mpg my car does either.

I would get rid of all cars personally. they fecking up this planet bigtime.
Bring back the horse and carriage and lets feed me tomatoes "
cars are not the evil the green muppets would have you believe.. its just a con to get you to pay more tax on everything.

Way to many in this little country ..stop mothers driving 100 yds to school for a start and make the bloody kids walk, thats why they got legs ffs.
Limit one car to one household.
And all cars should not be made to travel over 50 mls per hour. unless emergency services. why make a car that does 100plus miles an hour when its not legal to go that fast ?
But, this is MY opinion and wouldnt expect car owners to agree |

Yup!Have you noticed how all the scientific minds who were bleating about cars and pollution, have been very very quiet? All this talk of Hybrids, that are actually less green than a good diesel if you take into account whole life carbon!
I am not saying that we hoomans are not having some effect, but when you look at how scientific opinion has changed (hence "Global Warming" to "Climate Change"!) and how some are beginning to accept that the weather patterns will fluctuate.
What we do have to do is not waste energy and resources, if they had just said that in the first place, I would have been right on board at the start!
So OP... As you can guess, there is no way you will get me on busses or trains (too damned expensive for one). I like to get to my destination and not have to make my way from a station or bus stop, especially if it is raining or cold! |

Well I am one of those annoying people that when funds and drive permits has 4plus cars.. I do use it alot but I also have a disabled child that I drive the 1 mile to school as she couldnt walk it.
I also often have cars capable of well over 100mph.. I often use there speed and handling.. as enjoyment..( on a track)
The anti car brigade always amuse me with their clap trap about how much cars polute when the actual fact is that electric cars are far less efficient when you work out how they are made etc.. how they are charged..
I loved annoying my green neighbours when I had a v8 range rover, a v6 mg, and a subaru and an alfa.. all very not green friendly cars but mmmm did they all sound good..
I do agree with not using cars unless you have to... and car sharing.. but only because it helps with the stupid costs being forced on the motorists now they are losing money from the smokers...
I do about 14k a year in my cars.. and 50mph would be a stupid speed... as most cars are most fuel efficient at 60 not 50.. and it would take me forever to get somewhere.. its bad enough at 70ish...
for me I would campaign to get the motorways like the autobahns... would stop being a money making exercise then.. as speed is rarely the soul cause of accidents..( I know from riding motorbikes at speed) that its rarely the speed that causes the issues.. Driver error is the biggest factor.. or those that dont allow for the higher speed..
Tail gaters and those doing stupidly slow speeds on slow windy roads cause more problems than speeders... as I have seen many a crash caused because people get frustrated stuck behind some muppet driving slowly.
But back on topic.. Most public transport will get more expensive as the government has cut the money they put into it... Buses are not cheap to buy... and many cities are demanding the bus companies have new eco friendly buses... at a cost of well over 100k...

"Ok then....60mls per hour "
I have to do a trip of over 200miles on a regular basis.. already takes me at least 3 hours..
I think it should have no upper limit on some roads..
I would pay to use a road that was like that..
btw... if I wanted to get a bus from my house with the kids to my local town shopping centre.. it would cost me £18
If I took the car it would cost me less than a fiver.. and then £3-5 to park...
I would be door to door with the car.. and in fact I worked out that I could actually have thrashed the scooby down the lanes on the way there..had a hoot getting there...and it been cheaper.
oh..and I actually throw up as a passenger or if on a bus... if on the bus for more than 15 mins.

agree with this wholeheartedly the walking bus that some areas do is a fabulous idea
"Limit one car to one household."
not really practical when each member of the household work varying hours a lot of miles apart trust me i know we have to share a car and if we could afford to run a second one we would in a heartbeat would save a lot of hours for us
"And all cars should not be made to travel over 50 mls per hour. unless emergency services. why make a car that does 100plus miles an hour when its not legal to go that fast ? "
bugger orf mrs you are so obviuosly not a driver and have not a clue how frustrating it is being stuck behind a pooteler they drive me insane, yes i know a journey that won't take much fuel tut |

also it would be a pain in the ass to take a pushchair everywhere, and those people who don't have children would end up bitching about the space we take up :D |

Never had a problem I don't drive so I love going on a train always feels like a little holiday. Like going on a bus makes me laugh though as they are all low liners now. Mums and buggies have it so easy remember having to pass baby to driver while I collapsed silver cross pushchair. |

AY CARAMBA!!!
Get a car! They are cheaper and you don't get all that black shit up your nose from the tube."
Congestion charge and parking would come to that alone.Let alone petrol, depreciation etc |

Buy a scrap car for every day you need one and don't register it.
Just leave them in the streets when you're done. |

When Marcel Desailly was at Chelsea he went shopping in Knightsbridge he forgot where he parked his car.so he just went home.never gave it another thought.
Carlton Cole thought you only had to pay the congestion charge once.Til the bailiffs turned up at Chelsea's training ground! |

There are some cars I believe that you dont pay the congestion charge..
It is a joke.. my dad lives in outer london and right on the edge of the travelzones..and the amount of people that park down the side streets and then bus or get the tube in from there is a nightmare.. but it can mean that residents cant get there own cars outside thier houses.

There's nowhere to park in Central London without it costing an arm and a leg. Westminster meters are about £4 an hour. Some NCP carparks in W1 are £46 a day! |

One thread i have to contribute to, without the car this country would grind to a stand still, public transport couldnt cope with anywhere near the amout of travelling the people in this counrty need to do on a regular basis, then all of those tree huggers consider the filthy black smoke you see churning out of the buses on the roads then look at the age of some of them, ive seen as old as G reg still running around our roads but still charing 2011 prices to travel on them, then take into consideration these buses can run as badly as 5 miles to the gallon eating away at our diesel reserves some times just running around empty, they run regardless if they are full or empty for their timetables so is that environmentally friendly? our cars only run around when we are actually using them not empty! so theres one to think about, aswell as that theses buses are on the road every day full or empty, cars only on the road when they are used for a purpose, not to mention that using a car for a family of four would cost less in fuel than the price of four bus fares and only take the direct route you require to your destination and not half way round the world on a bus route taking twice the distance to where you are going, i really dont think the tree huggers have actually though their public transport over cars arguement. Cars are being designed more environmentally friendly every year and bus companies buy their fleet from the lowest bidder to maximise profit so think about all this in all of its aspects and you can see for yourself exactly why people prefer their cars:
1)Only used when needed and not running the roads empty every single day
2) driven the shortest way to the destination your travelling to.
3)Much better fuel economy than a bus
4)More convenient and fit to your timetable and not a bus companies
Just think about it |

some places public transport is much better and cheaper than others. Hereabouts it's not bad but too expensive and sometimes will work out cheaper to taxi if there are two or three of you. |

They live in the roads....they don't own the roads.
With very rare exceptions, when you buy a house you are only buying the house and not a part of the road. |

I looked into how I would manage without the car when I went part time earlier this year and was amazed to find its cheaper to run a car than use public transport to get to work.
It would take me about two hours to get to work on public transport rather than the 20 mins it does in the car.
did try not to use the car whilst not at work and it was a disaster, my normally organised life was turned upside down relying on buses that didnt turn up and trains that were cancelled.
Until theirs an incentive for me to give up the car Ill stick to having my wee box on wheels. |

The top speed on cars is so high to enable engines to "cruise" at 70 mph without thrashing the bollox out of it. |

Have no choice because I don't drive.
Never having had a car I don't miss the convenience.
Don't get me wrong sometimes a car would be handy but I just plan better.
Yes i get annoyed sometimes when they are late or don't turn up but that's life.
I sometime think about going for my license but there are just too many idiots on the road. Only time I do miss it is on holiday.
But you have not lived until you have travelled by bus in India where they are hanging off the roof. You fear for your life but better than any rollercoaster.
