Can't the home owners take their bin bags to the local recycling centre?

Some groups have organised this already, but not everyone may be in a position to transport their waste.

Filthiest place ive ever been to. I remember going to view a van. There were so much litter just dumped out in the residential areas. Bin bags full just tossed from the house. Just desserts if you ask me! Living like rats treated like them

From the tv coverage, I'm assuming no-one owns a car.

Its pure laziness! I go to the tip quite often. Its not even that far either! Every one has friends who can help to a degree.

I'm pretty sure people in Birmingham pay council tax so shouldn't be expected to put stinking rubbish in their cars.

Do they think it's the '70's or something?

Can someone give this man a blowjob, he sounds like he needs it

Nope, can't do it, I tried but I'm just going to have to say it

If fetching a van once qualifies someone to make judgments on Birmingham as a whole and it's people, then there is no hope.

I pay my council tax, that means that I should get my bins emptied I mean it's not like when I was a kid and the bin men would come all the way up the garden path and carry the bin down on his back, they refuse to empty the wheelie bins if the lid don't shut.

Birmingham is no worse or no better than any other major city in the UK, everywhere has its problem areas, I have never been to Plymouth but it would be wrong of me to assume that it's full of d*unk sailors and people who talk like pirates, I keep any ill informed notions to my self

I'm not sure the buses will allow people to carry bags of rubbish on them, or if the bus goes anywhere near the tip.

I honestly never realised that car ownership was so rare in Birmingham. Seems to be lots on the streets on the telly.

Youre missing the point. Those people volunteering to take the bins to the tip can be accused of being scabs. Stepping in and doing the bin collectors' job undermines the strike.

To be fair if that were my company i'd just write new contracts no striking. I'd sack them and give new jobs to the people that would appreciate being able to work.

why pay £140 a month council tax to then take your own bins 5 miles to a tip....

"this james guy wants to sack people working on minimum wage because they aren't grateful enough

Midpoint salaries for directly employed bin staff:

Driver Team Leader - £29,323

Leading hand - £21,962

Loader - £17,072

Not on minimum wage really. Lowest paid is not the highest wage but over minimum.

When the strike is over, and UNITE say it could last until Christmas it will cost millions of pounds they don't have to clear it all up.

The tips are mostly recycling centres now and don't have much facility for household waste, so it would be unfeasible for everyone to take their bin bags there. I agree with previous posters, it's what council tax is paid towards. The real question is how the hell in the year 2017 do we still have strikes lasting this kind of duration. The bin men want to get their arses back to work, from what I,'ve read online they appear to be on good money and its pretty lucrative pay sometimes. There have been job cuts all over the place. XXX

I refuse(!) to feel any sympathy for people worried about the health issues with piled up waste, who continue to contribute to the size of the pile.

.

A lot of private companies process the waste for councils, They start putting the price up and the only thing the councils can do is reduce labour/pay, Reduce collection times or buy the contract back from the private company, It happened with Greater Manchester council as it was costing them/tax payers a fortune

Makers!

I'm not in a union but god they seem to cause more issues now a days! And yes I'm aware if it wasn't for unions we wouldn't have employment rights etc but just like the coal strikers of the 80's they are ruining it.

do I look like someone who would have experience in that "

Birmingham has loads of issues, most of which are symptomatic of what happens when you try to create the biggest unitary authority in the country.

Why are people slagging off Birmingham now?? It has its issues, all to do with it being too big a local authority. But lots of other local authorities are up shit creek and are fucking up children's services. Its a brilliant place to be alive! More vibrant than any other english city outside of London.....there, ive said it, bring it on! Its notable that the people slagging it off dont actually live there, so what do they know anyway.

Had anyone actually done any research this before making statement - like go to the tip. ??

1. At present the current waiting time for people taking items to the B'ham recycling centres is around 4-6 hours. As people are trying to take it to the 'tip' themselves

2. There is only minimal capacity for land fill at the centres do they fill up quickly

3 you are not allowed to take vans - even small Ines - to the recycling centres unless you have a permit

So as you can see it's not quite so easy for residents to move the rubbish themselves.

Further more the residents can't take to Neibouring councils as you need to show proof of residency to avoid refuse from other rate paying areas being dumped in them

the local councill brought in a permit system for waste disposal at the tip for largeamounts/regular users just before the strike started so precluding neighbours clubing together to move the rubbish .the bearded brothers who have moved waste already had a permit

Except then you will be prosecuted for Fly tipping.

When the London rubbish collectors went on strike in 'The winter of discontent' in 78 everyone just let the rubbish bags pile up too. Few ran to ' the dump' .

Our dump has lots of different bins and areas for recycling different things. They help you out by pointing you to the correct area or bin. We have to prove we are residents of the borough..

I must say i thought this was the standard model. But seeing as now it turns out most residents of Birmingham can't drive, its kind of wasted on them.

Why would people do that? Like why do they not just take it to the dump?

Well I think its like the op said, a lot of people don't drive and some just won't take it on the on the principal that they paid their council tax and paid for a service and its not been done so why should they do it. My parents live in Brum and would struggle to take the bags and rely on public transport, so we have been down and took the bags to the skips for them because we have a van.

I have taken some of mine (and a neighbours) to the tip, but unsurprisingly there a huge queue, so obviously many others doing the same. 5 days later my car still smells a bit, which is why I'm hoping not to need to do so again.

For the record, I support the strike. I understand that they are not striking for more money but to retain their existing pay and conditions. They work hard at a real speed so why should they stand by and accept changes being imposed?

I don't even blame the council - it's the govt enforced cut to wider council budgets.

Government cuts are to blame but what else can be done when government debt is now more than double what it was 10 years ago? It currently sits just below £1.9 trillion, and rising every day.

Just the interest on that amount stands at £90 billion.

We could maybe properly tax their friends and families on the boards of these multinational conglomerates who are allergic to tax. Maybe close a few loop holes and start pursuing the crimes of the rich with the same voracity as we pursue those of the poor.

The highest earners in this country currently pay 27% of all income tax collected by HMRC, they account for less than 5% of the population. Just how much more do you want them to pay? And if you force them to pay more they'll most likely vote with their feet and move to another country with easier tax rules, taking their wealth and their business for others to benefit from.

Wouldn't it be fairer for government to pull it's finger out and actually tackle it's spenditure instead of repeatedly kicking it down the line for the next 5 generation to pay off, or maybe we should just tax more people till they squeak? Either that or the rich will leave the country and it will fall to the average Joe to pay off this huge government mismanagement.

This hugh government dept most likely contributes to why Interest rates have never prospered in building societys or even banks on ordinary accounts since the late 70,s or 80,s no more than 2 or 3 percent for years now I remember when it was regularly 4 and even 5 percent back then The Isa,s came along and that was the last good thing that did nothing remains now also the greedy bankers not to forget them..
