I know we have a large number of gym goers in the forum, both men and women.

For those of you that do lift, what type of lifting is it, powerlifting, weightlifting, crossfit, strongman, bodybuilding?

Why do you do it? Is it just a hobby and to keep fit or look good or do you have goals you'd like to achieve?

I compete in strongman and my main goal is to qualify for the finals of England's Strongest Man over 40 next year. I won't be expecting to win next year but qualification will be a big achievement. I'll be looking to place on the podium or win in 2019-2020.

I've always had a good squat and recently started adding deadlifts to that but i want to expand my knowledge of other Olympic lifts.

Debating doing the Crossfit beginners classes to get a basic grasp of the lifts and then developing my own routine/schedule.

I am a terrible bench presser

I used to do light weight lifting but I've developed arthritis in my shoulder so have had to stop. I still do some arm extensions and arm curls but very low weights now. I did it as part of an overall workout to keep fit x

Weight lifting.

For stress relief to be honest. The physical aspect is just a massive bonus.

I would never go into competing though.

I just play at it really, and luckily my body is very responsive to it.

Olympic lifting is unbelievably technical, if you're not flexible you have no chance

What's up with the bench press?

That's what I'm finding. I need to refine the technique and that requires a teacher. An instructor at the gym really broke the deadlift down for me and that really helped. next i want to focus on my clean and jerk and snatch lifts

As for my bench I don't know. I've always struggled and think I just need to add some consistency to the routine

Lack of consistency is always going to hinder you. If you want to get better I'd just say bench more often.

I do some squats, deadlifting and that thing where you lie on a plank face down and lift the bar from the floor to the underneath of the plank as part of my off water rowing training.

Competition with yourself is good, it's one of my biggest drivers as I hate failing in the gym. 120 is a good lift.

I do weights 4/5 days a week working each muscle group seperately, i also run and cycle to for fitness. I do it to keep a nice body shape and general fitness. For me I feel better and more confident when I do. I used to be really skinny but now have a shape and size I like. But it becomes addictive and your always chasing that little bit more lol.

I'm sure you'd embarrass me on the endurance front, I only have to pick things up once or for a max of 60 seconds and I'm done.

My training regime is a 6 day cycle..

Heavy weights on days 1,3,5 with cardio (running, swimming running) on days 2 and 4. day 6 is focused on more agility based exercises so lots of exercises which incorporates a lot of what my body naturally has.

To match it im eatting on average 3500 calories per day, consisting of 180g of protein (50g i get from a protein shake plus BCAAs) to offset the rapid digestion of the shake to make sure i get the most out of it, before it goes in i have normally put in 100g of protein which slows down digestion allowing my body to max out on the shake.

As for my body at the moment, it stil needs work, however in 6 weeks i have managed to put 2 inches on across my arms, chest and legs. My body fat has dropped from 24% to 11%

Lol a lot of people have that idea though, i see it at the gym alot....they come in and after 1 week they dont see any growth or change so they quite.

When i started training I took measurements, my weight and worked out my body fat. I only weigh myself on one set of scales, i use the same tape measure and run my bits through the same calculator.

It comes down to more than just training though, diet planning, counting everything...even exercises that hit the muscles on different angles... Compound, isolation, groups, it all counts and adds up

Tell me about it... Its not just counting calories though...thats bad enough but throw in working out protien amounts across the day, meal times, training times, working out optimal times for training according to your metabolism and all of that before your body throws a plateau at you so you have to mix things up to jump start it

Hiding in the shadows

I've always done cardio & endurance sports.

But 3yrs ago a car crash left me with serious spinal injuries, I started using weights as part of my rehab & got hooked.

I got really good, was amazed at how my body changed.

Had to a few follow up surgeries, meaning starting over each time, slowly getting back after the last one.

For me, it's a personal challenge. Pushing my body as far as it can go - after being told I may never walk again, it's an amazing feeling.

Also my age, when I started a few 'friends' joked I was too old! So there's now the prove them wrong attitude.

The fact I run rings round 20yros in the gym is also a bloody good feeling

Sounds like you've had a rough time. Defying the odds to walk again and do what your doing is pretty amazing, takes some determination.

I also like the feeling of out lifting the young guys

I've been lifting since college which was a loooong time ago. Can't go as heavy as I once did but hold my own.

My focus is on the compound lifts- bench, OHP, squat and dead lift. I throw in some HIIT, sprints or kettlebells for variety.

I live in Florida so there is lots of motivation to look good at the beach.

I am dying to get back to the gym. I was training hard, and had been for years. I cycled 8 miles to and 8 miles from work and lifted heavy weights for each muscle group 4 times a week. I found smashing myself on drop sets increased my strength massively. Periodically I would measure my stamina by rowing 8k and if I did it in under 30 mins I would be happy. Then 2 years ago I was involved in a bicycle versus car accident which knocked me out of the game for a while. I have tried to get back into training a couple of times but my injuries cause too much pain. I am waiting for a list of operations to put things right. I hate my Dad bod now and am begining to understand breathlessness outside of the gym. It has been great reading these posts. X
