Tattoos - Why ask for advice or suggestions......
Jump to: Newest in thread
So I have tattoos, along with a huge number of others out there and mine are deeply personal. It's become more socially acceptable and obviously a current trend.
The artists and their work has somewhat improved over the years and any decent artist wants to show off the work in the best way possible.
So why, oh why do people turn to public forums and their friends to ask "what tattoo should I get, and where?"
If you have too ask that question then you obviously don't want a tattoo, you just want too look cool.
What are your thoughts fabbers? Do you have tatts, and what is the story behind them? |

"Maybe people are just looking fir inspiration... something to start an "internal" dialogue that will bring them to a final design?
Cal"
I get that, but then why not seek advice from an artist? Asking Dave down the road won't really help. You wouldn't ask your local plumber how to change the big end bearings on a Ford Escort would you haha. |

I agree tattoos should be personal. I'm trying to design another myself but because I'm shit drawer and a can't afford to hire someone to design it, I'm in a bit of a rut |

Speak to a tattooist, normally they will draw it up for you for free. I've never been charged mfor the designing of mine. I went in with rough sketches and she went from them and only charged me for time it took to do the work itself. |

there are some that want a tattoo because it is fashionable so want the latest trend, I only have the one myself but it is a custom design that has meaning for me I do think if you're going to get one it's better that it has meaning to you then you're less likely to regret it years later |

I completely agree with the point OP is making but asking for ideas doesn't necessarily make it impersonal. Obviously you want a tattoo to look good, so regardless of what it is you make your adjustments to how you want it and make it your own. My tattoos are very distinguishable, but not necessarily unique but the point behind them is to tell people something about me that they may not have known otherwise. |

Tattoos should have a story behind them and be thought about for a minimum of 12 months before getting them to ensure you really want them. And never ask anyone else their opinion. Only qualified tattoo artists can advise on tattoos or designs. I'd never pick my own design, that's just a disaster waiting to happen. If Mr Tattoo Guy says I'd suit a skull on my neck then I have to get one. |

Gav here.
I have two deeply personal tattoos. I'd spent the majority of my life considering the design of one and the other came to me in a dream (yes, really!) They're so unique that the artist had never seen anything like them before and they don't appear at all when googled. That's because the artist and I sat down together to design them. Although they're familiar imagery they're a unique design based around the style of the artist and my preferences.
As far as I'm concerned, the ever increasing trend of "Oh, I'm getting a tattoo! I want to be cool and fashionable!" will leave a lot of people with cheap, hideous 'art' in years to come. There's nothing worse to me than going into a tattoo studio, picking some flash art, and then walking out twenty minutes later with something generic and utterly meaningless.
Tattoos, if done properly and with a deep personal meaning behind them, are a beautiful form of art. |

That and an expression of the person wearing them.
Those flash art tattoos you refer too are the "Primark" equivalent of tattoos. |

I thought about my first tattoo for about 3 minutes (and for half of that I was asleep!) but it is something that is just right. You know?
The second one (of only two), which I got a couple of months after the first, had been swirling around my head in some form or another since I was 5 years old! |

My personal view, and I have my sleeves done, is that I don't necessarily think they make people look cool, but I do get annoyed by that question as it just shows you simply aren't ready to have a tattoo, people have them for all sorts of reasons however as it will be on your skin for the rest of your life, only your opinion should matter |

Mine were not done on a whim, I was 18 when I got my 1st one. I was having a midlife crisis at 34 when I had my 2nd one designed for me, and my 3rd one when I was 39 and thought for months what to get and where and I still love them |

Why do they look that way though? I know for some people they just can't be tattooed. They bleed out or the body just tries to reject the ink. |

I knew I would have them when I was about 12, when you never saw a woman with them unless she was in a freakshow! Wasn't much better when I started getting them at 18 either. Some I have because they mean something, some just because I liked the design, although all bar one have been tweaked to be individual to me. I would never ask for suggestions, if anything I try to avoid stuff I know others have, I hate fashion and the drones it creates, you can't be individuals if you are all the same! Even though I have alot of tattoos, like alot of other people these days, mine are still very unique, I think. |

i'm heavily tattooed and most of mine have no meaning to them, i just really liked the picture and could fit it onto my skin.
love how the TV/mainstream media culture of 'my tattoo means something' has squeezed itself into actual tattoo culture. not. it just produces a lot of snobbery in a world where rebels and people not giving a shit about others opinions of themselves doesn't even fit, your snobbery makes no fucking sense. same for people wanting flash being slagged off, even flash is a style of tattoo that someone might like and choose just that.
tattoos are for anyone who wants one, anyone who loves art, who loves skin being covered in designs. if you start slagging off others choices then you don't even like tattoos and probably have no place getting them. my opinion.

That's because they chose them from a book of flash art tattoos. Nothing wrong with this of course, each to their own. For me I like to have a story to tell, rather than "I just liked it" |

All my tattoos are personal to me.They tell a story about the chapter of my life when I had each one of them. Some I still love and some I'm currently in the process of having removed.Tattoos are not like a poster that you can just simply remove when your tastes change. So never take advise off others on what tatt to have as it always should be something that means a lot to you x |

Yep, 5! First saw a tattoo when I was about 4 1/2, a scary (to me at that time) guy with tattoos everywhere and I though "I want one of those!" Then something came into my life when I was five and I knew then I wanted a tattoo to represent that
It took almost the next 30 years to finalise the design I liked and find enough balls to have it done. And you know something? I can't help but smile broadly every time I look at it. |

Of course, the same can be said about certain smells and the taste of different foods. Songs on the radio and even TV programmes take you back. I look at my tattoos and each of them makes me feel a certain way. They bring back feelings and emotions that nothing else could. |

I have a new big Phoenix tattoo on my forearm, it has meaning to me and I waited 3 years before getting it. I downloaded a picture off the internet for it and the tattoo man altered it to fit. The last meet I had lifted up my arm, ran his fingers over it and said "you got that a long time ago?" Clearly disapproving of it. |

"So I have tattoos, along with a huge number of others out there and mine are deeply personal.
If you've never had ink before you may not know who else to ask. I would always advise to research the tattooist and designs then discuss placemen and design with your chosen artist.
And remember they're permanent |

"i'm heavily tattooed and most of mine have no meaning to them, i just really liked the picture and could fit it onto my skin.
love how the TV/mainstream media culture of 'my tattoo means something' has squeezed itself into actual tattoo culture. not. it just produces a lot of snobbery in a world where rebels and people not giving a shit about others opinions of themselves doesn't even fit, your snobbery makes no fucking sense. same for people wanting flash being slagged off, even flash is a style of tattoo that someone might like and choose just that.
tattoos are for anyone who wants one, anyone who loves art, who loves skin being covered in designs. if you start slagging off others choices then you don't even like tattoos and probably have no place getting them. my opinion.
"
This is very true, many years ago when tattoos were only seen on a certain type of person, I don't think for a minute big burly Dave thought for a year about what tattoo he wanted, he just got inked up in whatever took his fancy, now its mainstream their is a snobbery around tattoos, and people saying that they have to have a meaning, they don't, I have 3 and they are not fantastic pieces of art but they are mine and I like them and I have fantastic memories about getting them done. Life's too short for regrets, but if your only regret in life is a tattoo on your arm then you really are winning at life.
