I think it's the licence that you need to be a 'door supervisor' more commonly known as 'bouncers' or 'thugs'

most companies are asking for you to obtain a license;

in some areas bar staff are also being ask to obtain the License.

an the cost is very high (£250)

when you do the training an pass the 4 exams, you have the license for 3 years then do it all again. so the thugs at the door bouncers or other names it wont last for very long

In reality, it is now MANDATORY for all Security officers to have an SIA Licence. So too, must Wheel Clampers, CCTV system Operators and other sectors of security workers.

The cost of each category licence is at least £299, though may companies pay for it on behalf of their personnel. A number of companies however, retrieve the costs involved via deductions from monthly pay, so you end up paying for it eventually.

I note what you say about Bar Staff being asked to get a Licence. That is totally separate, nothing to do with with the SIA, but it is all covered by the Licensing Laws. I hold a Personal Licence, valid until 2015.

Back to SIA Licences; anyone with a criminal record cannot have an SIA Licence, as part of the application process involves Police and CRB checks.

One last point is that the Security Industry is trying very hard to eradicate the terms of "THUG" and "BOUNCER", when relating to Door Supervisors and Door Staff.

To many in the profession, and I hold an SIA Licence, the use of those two words is, sorry to say it, insulting.

Sorry, you are incorrect!

The main reason the SIA Licensing process was brought in was to ensure that the Security Industry was rid of either Owners and Directors or the employees themselves who had criminal records.

If you have a record, it isn't a case of proving your worthiness, either as an Owner or as an employee; the end of the matter is YOU DON'T GET A LICENCE, period!

If you are found working in the Security Industry without having any appopriate Licence, you can be arrested and fined heavily. Employers who use non-Licenced personnel can also be fined heavily and they will gain their own criminal record too.

For the poster, thanks for the point showing the individual costs. Yes, the course is separate at £250, (although I believe it may have increased lately) and the Licence is £300 (yeah, call me a liar for a quid's differnce )

if you have criminal record you can hold a lincense, you have a probation period, and if are investigated/aressted whilst on this probabtion, without question or answer the SIA revoke the license, but yes you can hold a license if you have a 'scared' history

I think you;ve missed the point.

Round here police often ask for 2*SIA licence holder on the premises for late night drinking - pubs get bar staff to get a n SIA licence so they don't have to pay separately for door supervisors.

The personal licence under the licensing act is only necessary for someone who is acting as DPS.

Obviously, there may well be differences between how English and Scottish licnsed premises operate.

When I was operating my Bar in Essex, I only needed an SIA Door Supervisor on, when I had functions with non-residents attending. For normal everyday Pub workings, Door Supervisors aren't required, unless it is say Friday to Sunday night opening hours, when patrnage is potentially much higher.

The point you raise about Police asking to see Licences, that is an SIA ruling. The Licence must be produced if requested not only by the Police, but to SIA Inspectors who do travel around the UK and make unannounced checks on all premises.

It varies from place to place, depending on the police and the licensing authority. A common police tactic here is to tell the premises licensee he'll face a premises re_iew if he doesn't employee more dupervisors.
