Constantine and other adaptions

Watching Constantine at the minute and although I enjoy the film, I really wish they would do a true to the original adaption. They did a series on Amazon which was close but never got the reception.

What characters or books would you like to see adapted to the big screen?

I'm now watching on plus 1. Love this film (and have a girl crush on Rachel Weisz)

A proper adaptation of war of the worlds set in turn of the last century London exactly as was written in the hit book and not some American producers idea of how it should be.

Also I am legend-should be like the cerebral but quite unsettling book and not an action picture....i could only watch the first 15 mins of the will Smith effort before I turned it off.

Looking forward to the Dark Tower film, the books were brilliant plus Idris Elba and Matthew McConaghy are great in anything

I'm worried about these. I loved the Gunslinger and most of the Dark Tower series. I like Idris Elba (a lot) but I always think of Roland as rangy, with this authority and strength coming from his actions, bearing and look in his eyes. Elba is a bit too developed for that, but he may be able to convince me if he acts that softer side with the inner steel.

To be fair they could probably have switched roles as McConaghy would've also made a good gunslinger! I'll be gutted if it's no good

Some of the Culture novels by Iain M Banks would make truly phenomenal films/TV if done properly. Whether or not they're actually filmable without costing the earth to get right is a reason why they may not ever be done.

I agree. I know this is being done as a first film, and not following the story exactly as written, but I'm worried that I will end up thinking they missed an important narrative.

I'm not sure anything is impossible anymore. It just takes the right imagination to see it produced in the medium that will make it work.

If you're in London before the end of August go and see the Sci-fi exhibition at The Barbican. It's brilliant. Hog the first interactive screen; I wish I had.

Good call, Against a Dark Background or The use of weapons would be great.

Problem with "faithful" film adaptations of books is they are usualy shit.

Books have a lot of extra mechanisms to give information to the reader a film doesnt.

In a film you can't just out and out give the characters thoughts without it being retarded.

Where as in a book its very easy for the author to write out the characters inner monologue in a way that takes zero action time.

Where as in a film you cant just have everyone stand around for 30+ seconds while a character does a voice over of thier inner thoughts

i was reading today that The Dark Tower isn't going to be the film the fans hope it's going to be. But this was a website that's not exactly known for being for the fans, more of a click bait site so keep Minds open.

I may have to read the books before the films come out.

I agree with I Am Legend. The book and the film are very different but I enjoyed the film for what it was. Omega man was closer to the book but still not perfect.

In terms of adaptation, world war z was a huge let down

I don't think there's any that I really would like to be adapted. They're often a let-down more than anything else.

If it was an ideal world and they did the best adaptations possible then The Witcher series (which is being made, fingers and toes crossed there).

The comic series Saga, which I'm not convinced could ever actually be done.

And lastly, I really really really want an anthology series based on Lovecraft stories.

Dune being the exception ... it worked brilliantly for David Lynch

I am a great Hellblazer fan, and although I liked Constantine the film it was not Hellblazer. I forced myself to watch 5 minutes of Constantine the tv series and 2 minutes in I was watching Hellblazer, relief.

I think it is easy to knock adaptations it is rare when they do a good job but loved Miller's secret service and Kingsman was better than the comic. Hellboy was done well as was Blade (film not tv series).

I am awaiting Garth Ennis's The Boys' adaption that is in development hell.

I would love Netflix to do '100 Bullets'.

I know there was TV series of it (and the one episode I watched led me to the books) but a film or Netflix adaption of the Harry Dresden books.

It's better to watch the film then read the book.

That was the book adds to the film rather than the film missing bids ou'd the book :p

Speaking of Garth Ennis, I hope he's had a big influence on the upcoming punisher series.

And I haven't read The Secret Service coming but Kingsman is a great film.

Wanted was also very different to the comic but it's another one where I enjoyed both mediums

I love Garth Ennis's work, I will have to look out for the new Punisher series. I think his take on Punisher was brilliant. I also loved the anti hero he introduced Barracuda. Completely politically incorrect in terms of race but brilliant.

Wanted was my favourite comic mini series for a long time but the film did not do it for me. If they had called it anything else then it would have been good.

Following from Constantine I would love to see a Papa Midnite spin off.

On the bizarre side again Criminal Macabre by Steve Niles. A decent take on Vampirella or Hack and Slash.

Nottingham

I'd love to see a better adaptation of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Truer to Moore's acerbic style, and with all the references put in (also less "I Beat My Wife" Connery, but y'know....)

Also I'm looking forward to Ready Player One. It looks like a fun adaptation.... Different, but as Thx118 says, it's two different media with different storytelling mechanics, they cannot always be entirely identical.

The story arc with barracuda was brutal but a great read hopefully he'll be introduced into The punisher series, maybe season 2. I really should check his other work out

Ready Player One looks like it's going to be a great film

Garth Ennis is a comic writing great, wrote for 2000AD and has great writer produced work as well as contributing to existing titles. His War stories would make a great tv series. His strength and weakness is that he loves to go over the top on grossness. But his Dan Dare is child friendly but has subversive adult elements. His Series 'Crossed'could never be filmed as it makes The Walking Dead look like a nursery story.

Any of Brubaker and Phillip's Criminal, Fade Out and Fatale Series would make a great tv series.

I will check Ready Player One.

But I am looking forward to Terminator 2 in 3D to be released in the UK next month.
