The ability to pay by card is relatively new, most online payment services don't like to be associated with "Sex Sites" so the choice of services is limited.
There are also transaction charges attached to all of these services, so where the £5 text may charge one rate, paypal will charge another. £12.50 is obviously the level at which the organisers can get the best rate without needing to charge you extra.
There is also the Phone Call option which works & cost the same as the text process.
