The Americans call it the " British open " but it is in fact called " the open " as it's the only major golf tournament around the world that anyone can enter amateur or professional as long as an amateurs handicap suits the entry requirements  |

As a golfer myself i've always known it to be the open, seeing as golf was invented here i would suggest its called THE open as the uspga was not founded until many years later then they decided they want a open of their own hence us open.
