It was my job to go buy the spuds (taking the trusty spud bag with me). 6p got us 3lb of spuds from the greengrocer.

I also had to go get paraffin from the paraffin dispenser at the end of the street( bit like a petrol pump that you put 10p in, stuck your can underneath and got paraffin for your heater ... can you imagine such a thing these days? )

And I was capable of various other chores such as doing the family laundry using a twin tub, making Yorkshire puddings from scratch and that old faithful, washing up

Id have to go to the shops for my mum to get newspapers, milk, etc. My mum had a degree of OCD in relation to cleaning so I never had to do that, as I wasnt deemed good enough, which I never argued with.

My dad went out to the pub once a week on a sunday dinner time, and I used to have to go to the pub to tell him his dinner was ready. I hated walking into the pub with guys playing darts and dominos. On seeing me, it was my Dads queue to quickly order another pint and I had a bag of crisps if I promised to tell my mum that he hadnt really bought another but just was slow in finishing up his pint.

I was my mums personal back scratcher and hair brusher

If she'd had a hairy back I could have got 2 jobs done at the same time
