By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Just clipped a cat in my car, it ran right out under my wheels and there was nothing I could do. It ran off and wasn't knocked over but I could tell I had clipped it buy the movement it made. I stopped the car n got out n went to see if I could find it but it had run off.

I don't know what to do now, I want to put a message on Facebook in case the cat is hurt and needs looking at. But I'm worried about doing this in case I get lumbered with a big vets bill. I did knock on the door of the garden it ran into but i didnt get an answer. It wasn't my fault the dam thing was under my wheels before I saw it. I was only doing 25 miles an hour cos it was a 30 limit n I was coming up to a mini roundabout.

Please what should I do?

You have no liability, cats are not regarded as "property" but wild animals.

Yes I'm thinking that if I put it on Facebook I'm an easy target for money grabbers. It wasn't my fault so I shouldn't be worrying about it really. Before the internet people ran over cats n you would never know what had happened to it. X

Cats will run off if they're hurt and ours have always managed to make it home.

You're the only one who can decide about Facebook.

Unfortunately most people wouldn't do anything let alone admit they hit a cat.

Ours got ran over and the woman didn't even stop or let us know shed done it.

The chap behind her told us what had happened, our cats now buried in the garden.

How awful all round.

I as a besotted cat owner would be reluctant to say put something on Facebook because you will be an easy target. But on the other hand if it was my cat I'd want to know. But unless you know for certain where it lives I can't see that there is really anything you can do. But feel for you, that's a horrid thing to happen to you. x

I've done the same thing. When scared/injured they run and hide, self preservation thing. You are not liable, although you used to have to report to police if you ran over a dog - not sure about that now.

You have a conscience and that is to be applauded. Putting it on FB is a long shot. As I said you are not liable but you may get the cat trolling, keyboard warriors abusing your page.

We would have appreciated knowing sooner that way we could have got them treated earlier. However it isn't always possible to find a cat once its run off. We wouldn't have asked the car driver to foot the bill because we're aware that animals have no road sense.

Only advice on the web is what to do with a dead or injured cat. Not what to do if the dam thing runs away.

I suppose there's nothing I can do all likely hood is that it's ok as I was going quite slowly and it ran off.

I'll keep an eye on my local feeds and if I see anything relating to it I'll message then. I got a look at it as it ran off so I know what it looks like plus I know a local councillor who posts local updates like missing cats. X

Contact local vets and let them know. Give a description of the cat. Don't leave personal details unless you want to.

Most people if their cat goes missing contact local vets.

I would not put it on Facebook, you'll get grief probably. It only takes one person to get arsey and you'll have folk from all over the shop giving you grief because the story has ended up worse than it actually was and folk don't listen.. Not worth it.

The reality is; you have no legal requirement to do anything; you have no legal impediment to pay for any vet bills; you do not know where the cat came from nor where it is now; you will become the target of FB trolls if you post on there; you are feeling very upset and distressed;. That is understandable, but once again I remind you that there is very little you can do or should do.

You're not liable for any bills. The cat ran out and was unavoidable. No owner or troll can claim anything. If your still concerned, just say you saw it happen and wanted to help.

But the injury can be serious. Our last cat turned up on our back doorstep after being knocked down. Smashed hips, but it had walked 20 yards and come over two gates to get home with that injury. It needed hospital treatment to survive.

They can still move when badly hurt, much better than we would be able to.

Put it on fb or better still go back if it's local enough.

No reason you should feel any responsibility for this happening. Look at it this way - if you had swerved to avoid the cat and had caused a more serious situation, would the owner of the cat accept responsibility for the accident and the actions of their cat...

Chances are the cat will limp home to owner if it can.

If it can't, then it will instinctively know its days are numbered and go hobble off somewhere quiet to pass away.

OP try not to feel too bad, cats are stupid when it comes to roads.

If you stopped and looked for the injured cat there really is nothing more you could have done.

Some years ago one of our cats was clipped by a car and injured around the rear end. His tail was completely paralyzed and he did have a few problems with controlling his bladder sometimes but still lived a long and happy life. We would never have held the driver responsible and most reasonable people would think the same way.

Keep an eye on your local feeds for a while just in case someone is looking for a missing cat that matches the description of the one you clipped. If your cat is lost you just want to know what happened to it even if it isn't good news.

Chances are the cat has gone home and it doesn't sound like it was to badly hurt . If you travel that way a lot next time you pass the house you knocked the door on call and see if they have heard anything. It could be a stray cat or a farm cat neither of which would be very easy to catch . You stopped in the first place and by what your saying did everything you .Don't worry to much about it I'm sure it's okay

...Up on the Downs

I would not put it on facebook, but I would go back later and call in to a couple of houses to let them know a black/tabby/whatever cat ran out in front of you and was clipped. If it was my cat, and missing, I would then know I needed to find it urgently.

I have 4 cats and they are part of my family I would be devestated if anything happen to them but I am aware that they have no road sense . You are not responsible for the cat at all and you tried finding the owners I think someone suggested earlier inform the local vets that's the best advice .

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

I have lost 2 cats to being hit by cars, it's not nice but it happens.

You don't know who's cat it was and there are probably a dozen or so cats in that vicinity that would match the description you could give.

It ran off and hopefully it's alright...that's it, you did all you could at the time, now try and put it out of your mind and don't beat yourself up over it.
