Just seen a article on BBC news about these mugging everyone's fish and chips at Whitby.
So is it just Whitby or have you been mugged by seagulls elsewhere? |

Got attacked by one last week when I was in Wales. Fucker got me on the head. Don't know if it was it's beak or its claws but the blood was everywhere. That will teach me to shoo away a baby one x |

Ah, the annual summer holiday, seagull snatching, story being rolled out in the news
Been a problem for many years, and I thought Whitby were dealing with the problem.
You can get fined for actually feeding them!
Even in a city you'll get these scavengers trying to take advantage |

In bristol the seaguls near temple meads are just bloody vicious to the extent ive seen people wearing hard hats as they leave
As for food muggings, the waterfront is dangerous if you have a plate of chips they are pretty brazen and dont care if your eatting or not |

On a slight change of note....what I find amusing is when them little flies invade for a couple of days....poor kids screaming and more icecream and candy floss getting dropped on the pavement..as they get covered by the little buggers |

A seagulls stole my lunch at work one day.
We aren't keen on them. They circle our house at certain times of the day making enough noise to wake the flaming dead. They cover our cars in sh*t. If you sit on the beach in the evening with a picnic they stalk you and if you dare to have fish and chips on the seafront you need bodyguards and an exclusion zone round you.
However they're protected so there's nothing we can do but put those ineffective kites in our garden or decoy hawks and owls on the roof. |

To a degree but seagulls aren't daft. In the end they realise it never moves. It does deter other birds which is a shame so we choose to put up with the seagulls.
It's a small price to pay for living by the sea |

Stepped out a sandwich shop with a lovely sandwich, had just spent 10 mins watching the dude make. On way to park to eat it...just thought have a bite.
Took one bite and well I snogged a seagull it really was a horrible experience.
Apart from wings and feathers in my face and hair...the bird got its its beak into my mouth with the sand which end...it was a horrible experience...my lips and mouth tasted salty...my lip was cut and my tongue.. the sand which on floor with rats of the sky all around.
I used bottle of water to rinse mouth etc at time but for ages after could taste salt and something horrid in mouth.
Truly I don't hate any animals but seagulls can be aggressive towards people in their fight for limited food sources.
I'm quite cautious about sea gulls now having snogged one...got Sicky feeling thinking about it |

I live on the coast, and the local town is full of them, so far this year the count is
Gulls 5 Me 1
Although like all creatures, we've taken away so many natural habitats, having our towns invaded is imo, pretty much humans fault |

I've lived by the seaside for almost 20 years, and the biggest problem I've had with gulls is the racket they make when I can't sleep - thankfully they don't nest near my house - and the stench of the seagull shit.
I have seen some really stupid fucking behaviour though, like watching a family allowing their toddler to feed fish and chips to seagulls on the beach which is just asking for trouble. |

I live on an island and to be honest it's usually the humans that encourage the birds and wonder why they get bombarded and attacked for their food. They are just scavengers and will eat anything they can. If we dispose of our food waste appropriately it would discourage them a little. The worst thing about it is the buggers shit all over my car, which reminds me I must go wash it AGAIN. |

"Just went to get the pristine, white sheets off of the washing line. One had a huge, brown splash of seagull sh*t on it. .
Now that's just a sweeping statement on poor gulls. Could be been a thrush or swan!!!"
No thrush or swan could achieve that coverage. |

"Ive see it happen loads of times down here in Devon. I dont understand why gulls are a protected species. A cull wouldnt be a bad thing in my opinion!
Mine too if they are attacking people and causing harm ." There is about 12 species of gull or more that come inland in the winter, of these I,ve only seen herring gull as the likely culprits stealing food etc, there are other big gull species but as (far as I know) their not Involved in this type of activity and none of the regular smaller gulls are either unless some lesser black backed gulls get Involved to? and they are one of the bigger gulls. but presumably its all or the majority being herring gulls. |

So is it just Whitby or have you been mugged by seagulls elsewhere?"
Get mugged on a daily basis here in the isle of man. They nest on houses and try and attack whenever they see you. Evil little fuckers. If I had a gun I'd shoot em. |

Clacton on sea have some proper evil gulls. Its a town that's full of chavs, pissheads, druggies and hoodrats and the seagulls mimic that totally. Rumour has it they actually have flick-knives stashed under their wings. |

So I've only seen one town doing this in the country, but the poor eagle seemed swamped by sea gulls.
The local council employ a guy with a big eagle to keep sea gulls away from a town area during summer.
I wonder does anyone else know of this and does it still go on.
I do do wonder if ultrasounics could be used to drive seagulls away |

In Hartlepool they used to have speakers around the shopping centre that blasted out hawk noises to try to scare them off. |

Sorry all anorak time. Most of the gulls who steal food are herring gulls. Basically, just like magpies they are supreme adaptors managing to live alongside humans and take advantage of any opportunity that comes along. As annoying as people may find it they should be given some credit for finding a mechanism to adapt to the world dominated by humans. Perhaps a blue peter badge or jim'll fixed it medallion will suffice, actually scrub the second suggestion |

Is bad for them at Whitby. I know people were playing a game other year where they had to run a short distance with chips on there head without seagulls taking them. Even got mentioned on local news as dangerous |

Seagulls will eat anything.
From going through your black bags to eating baby birds.
In Clacton there is soo many of them.
My son had food snatched out of his hand the seagull cut his finger poor little sod cried his eyes out.

Probably a herring gull with a grey back. Leg colour is also a good way to decipher

In few places around coastal Devon. The council's have introduced fines for feeding gulls and sea birds. 80 squid.
Feeding the birds you get fined. Im still confused as to how anyone can be fined for feeding wild bird, who is only trying to survive, given we taken all the marine life they previously ate. Next be kids fined for feeding ducks at local park.

They are dangerous ....they need culling .....pigeons are treated as pests in many towns and cities. .. but at least they dont attack people ...
You will never stop them stealing food or breeding unless drastic action is taken .. |

Reading back through this thread, I'd like to clarify that I still haven't been attacked by seagulls in the seaside town where I live... however I went to Whitby a few months ago and some seagulls were definitely eyeing up my fish and chips. I hid my food and stomped my feet at them until they ran off. |
