Me and mum, have been researching family tree. We have been doing it over 10 years. Anyway at the start of the year mum took a DNA test, am I followed a few weeks ago. We always joked that we would find someone distantly that had skeletons

Anyway my results came through this week. There was a random second cousin that I didn't recognise the name but I knew it had to be on dads side of family as mum had her results a couple of months back so we knew her connections

Anyway I wrote to them asking them did they know my grandparents names and did they make sense. No response, mum asked me what the surname was and it turns out that it is he name of my nans first husband.

We know that this person is related by DNA which only could mean that my nan had a child with her first husband. So I send a follow up email to say are you related the name of a potential half brother of my dad who we have always know. About

Anyway we get an answer that yes, he is, this person is my dad and is still alive. That means. That my 61 year old father has found his 80 year old half brother. We exchange some details

Then on Wednesday, I have a call with him. It turns out that my half uncle never knew nan was his real mum, as he was evacuated during the war, and he told us that his dad who we confirmed my nan married as we have my nans marriage lines, picked him up after evacuation with a woman he though was his mum....

I have now ordered his birth certificate, and my mum has reordered my fathers certificate, to confirm that the mothers name is the same.

We are now just waiting, but the fact there is such a DNA link, on the bmd index it has my nan surname on mothers name, his first name is the name of a a son we have known that my nan had, also his middle name is the same strange name as his father and grandfather. He said he was born in the same place as the marriage lines....

Let's say it has been a shock for both families, him more so as he didn't know he had a younger brother, my father, he didn't know that his mum was his birth mum, and also he has gained at leat 2 half brothers he didn't know about as well as 3 nephews and a neice.

We are now waiting for him to let his family know and let us know what the next steps are, does he want to know us, or does he want to speak to my dad his brother. I have said as soon as his birth certificate comes I will send it to them.

I know I have done the right thing but I do feel that I have chucked a grenade in to a family and let it go off. I did ask did you ever send for birth certificate and he said well no because he had short version. Which does not have parents names on

Brighton - even Hove!

I've traced my family tree back to about 1280 and there were knights and all, the only vaguely skeleton in the cupboard thing was my aunt wasn't actually married even though she told everyone she was. Dull as dishwater, really.

.

I would of done the same but everyone will react different, Its probably very common for that generation as the war would of split a lot of families up, People would of been moved around and not been able to find there families again and some might of wanted a fresh start, I took a DNA test a few years ago, Mine was pretty boring, No direct family matches although I did find out I was 46% Irish

Well it has come to light his family knew that he had a different mother but never told him

Therefore he has decided to stop contact with both families a shame but nothing we could have done we tried looking for him but that's his loss my dad never knew him but I guess it is a family tale that we lost and uncle and gained one then lost one again
