How much would you expect to pay fior a?

Watch battery supplied & fitted? My wife had it done today by a well known retail chain. Yes it was quick & convenient but think she was ripped off, knowing how much the battery cost & the 2 minutes it took to fit it. How much would you be happy to pay?

I bought an a4 sheet of assorted watch batteries for 99p, it's got about 30 batteries in all and all sizes, I then bought a watch repair tool kit for 3.99 on eBay. I'll never have to pay again and neither will anybody I know.

Took my nice watch to a well known high street jeweller for a new battery, completely forgot about it they contacted me 14 months later telling me my watch was done. Went in and fetched it and the new battery died after 3 months! Ffs! Never got it fixed since that was 7 years ago! Lol cost about £15 off top of my head!

I actually took a watch a few days ago to Timpsons for a new battery. It's a Raymond Weil, so yes, not a cheap watch. He said, water tight would be £32. I said I'd think about it. It seemed a lot!!

Had mine done at Tompkins last weekend - was £18 with a one year warranty on the battery or £24 with a lifetime warranty (meaning they will replace the battery for free anytime the battery runs out during the lifetime of the watch) so took the latter option.

Yep that's what I did!"

The only problem with that is that if your watch is waterproof and it's not put back together properly and pressure tested, it can let in moisture. If it's a decent watch it's worth paying for it to be done properly.

I suspect this is exactly the reason some have to pay higher costs - they test and (re)guarantee the water resistance on them after changing the batteries.

Me too but one of my watches doesn't have screws, it needed a special tool to twist it off so I bought a whole kit.

Interesting post . Do you think the wearing of watches has declined over the years due to the mobile phone etc ? I know years ago we both had watches for going out etc ( not for work) . No idea if it had declined it was just a thought?

I think they have, but for me, I feel naked without a decent weighted watch on my wrist. (Not the fun kind of naked)

Funnily enough I feel undressed without my watch too - but the number of times I catch myself reaching for my mobile to check the time rather than glancing at my wrist is unreal!!

I started wearing watches quite recently, so didn't replace any batteries yet. But with decent watch, I would never go to watch stand or any retail chain shop. I would only use local watchmaker/watch repair shop. Not only these guys need your business, they most likely do it better and cheaper then retail chain shop

Yes mines not a cheap one and that's why most high streets won't touch it , luckily enough it's only every few years I need a new battery.

I'm glad I read this thread, I've got a couple of Tag Heuers so googled the average battery life. Anything from 2-5 years and they give a 4 second warning when they need a battery change.

Stops for 4 seconds then skips 4 seconds.

So I'll probably get them serviced and battery changed at that point. Probably around £150-£160 total cost each.

I think I'd find owning a watch with a mechanical movement quite annoying

I don't wear a watch anymore. I was given one by my then boyfriend for my 21st birthday and it survived for 23 years. Haven't replaced it.

Others were quoting £30 for same service..

The days of an old guy with funny glasses doing it for £3.65 seem to be over
