Have you ever been fired?

Jump to: Newest in thread

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

On the back of the other thread, I've been thinking about the other side:

How did it make you feel?

Did you feel it was justified?

Did you learn from it and move on to something right for you?

Was it done well?

I was fired from my first full time job as a teenager. It was a job I took because my parents had thrown me out and I needed to earn. It was boring and I was left on my own to do not a lot for most of the day.

The sacking was justified and I learned an important lesson. However, the manner of the sacking was brutal and I was made to feel worse than the reason for the sacking warranted. It was the early 80s and we didn't have as many rights back then.

It made my practice of firing people better than it might have been if I hadn't had that experience. Only 1 of the many people I have had to sack or make redundant continues to dislike me. Others have thanked me for the getting rid of them and enabling them to do something they really enjoy.

I got fired (deliberately) before I started once.

Me and a friend went to work over the Summer in a food processing plant as 18 or 19 year olds via a temping agency.. we turned up for our first shift and the manager asked my friend first if he bit his fingernails. He said yes so he wasn't allowed to work there in case bits of fingernail ended up in the sausage rolls!

I didn't want to work there on my own so when I was asked I said I did to so I'd be refused too!

The only time I've been refused a job in my life

I've been fired three times. Once for not meeting quota and two other times as part of downsizing. In each case it resulted in finding a better opportunity.

I have fired a large number of people myself for reasons of non performance and as part of restructuring after a merger.

It doesn't get easier. Personally I think it's harder for the person facilitating the firing.

I've never been sacked, but I have lost my job due to relocation.

My daughter got sacked earlier this year and she was gutted. She didn't know what she did was wrong, and there was stirring by other employees to make it her word vs theirs. However she got another, better job not long after and is much happier. And now knows to report IT fubars straight away.

I've never been fired but I have been made redundant due to the business I worked for folding.

I used my redundancy to purchase all the company assets and set up my own business doing the same thing.

It has been an interesting journey.

Once, apparently a week is too much time to have off after having a miscarriage when I was 19. I was devastated, but it taught me the importance of being with a decent employer which I have been lucky enough to maintain ever since.

But personally I think he has had a easy life really and not really suffered any hardship so is an easy option for him as he can sign on (though I have no idea how that works either)

Good for her. I do think that people should know exactly why they are being dismissed. They may not agree but if it's clear they have the leisure to reflect.

That's interesting. The 'fit' is such a difficult thing but if they are so exclusive it would be difficult for anyone new to join them.

i cried when i got sacked.

i worked in a pizza shop and someone hid the delivery driver keys for a prank, they made the joke last too long though and my boss was getting stressed so i found them for him and gave him the keys and he said i'd hidden them and sacked me.

i got my job back a few weeks later when the person who hid them owned up to it but i didn't really want it back by then, just took it coz i was desperate as the job centre didn't pay you any benefits if you got sacked.

I'm so sorry. I had the same thing raised by one employer but as I had been doing 70 hours a week for months (long before legislation on working time) I pointed out it was lucky for them I wasn't asking for all the time owed to me.

Yes, when I was 16, from a big high street store. My female boss wanted all the attractive Saturday girls to wear the uniform (pencil skirt and blouse) a size too small, along with stiletto heels to 'persuade' male shoppers to buy more. I lasted until lunch time then went out and bought a pair of flats.

The next week I was called in to her office and ordered to wear the heels; I refused, she fired me and demanded the uniform back - I deliberately stretched, most of the buttons popped off the blouse and I left giving her the finger. Not very classy but satisfying

I got fired by a major multi national company some years ago.

At the time I was disabled and had the job offer withdrawn on medical grounds due to my disability. I appealed, pointing out that it was disability discrimination and the job offer was reinstated.

At the end of my 6 month probationary period the company fired me claiming my performance was below standard. I appealed and was able to show that out of a cohort of 20 new employees my performance was 2nd best, therefore performance was not a valid reason to fire me and it was again because I was disabled. The company reinstated me into my role and paid me for the time period I wasn't at work while the appeal went through.

A few years later they wanted to get rid of me again. This time they had company lawyers draw up an agreement terminating my employment, they offered a pay off on the condition I didn't take them to an employment tribunal and I wasn't allowed to discuss the terms of the agreement. The company did pay for me to obtain independent legal advice before I made my decision. I agreed to go this time as the job no longer suited me.

He won't get benefits immediately if he's been sacked. Your JSA gets sanctioned for 13 weeks and anything up to 26 weeks as you are deemed to have made yourself workless.

It was awful. They put her on gardening leave while they investigated but it took them two weeks to call her in, and she didn't have an independent witness with her or anything. I was 'this' close to going down there to be there for her.

They lost a good worker, but she is happier now.

They have to offer you payment for a independent legal advice otherwise you can contest the Compromise Agreement later. It's to protect them not you. It sounds like their practices are pretty poor.

I've never been sacked, but once I walked out of a hellish apprenticeship at a care home - £3.65 an hour simply isn't enough to be cleaning up people's shit and piss, putting up with an ignorant, unsympathetic manager and the amount of anxiety I felt by being there. I dreaded every shift.

I had a summer job in a shoe shop when I was at college. One day a woman came in asking for a job telling the manager she had worked in an Oxford Street shoe shop.

I was called in to the office and sacked for "not selling enough polish". She started the next Monday.

I was young and naive and just accepted it. I felt humiliated and upset at the time. If it happened to me now I'd be asking difficult questions.

Yes when I was a teenager I got sacked from a job for being ' rude' to a customer.

It wasn't done in a nice why, I went to work as normal and got told to leave and not set foot in the building again. It was done infront of the other staff.

I was very upset about it especially when I hadn't been rude to anyone. I had been hit by a customer ' by accident ' and they complained when I asked them not to do it again or they'd have to leave the arena.

As yet never been fired.

Many years ago I got the distinct impression I was going to be fired so I got in 1st. The dismissal would have been justified though as I was uninterested in the job & therefore crap at it.

I've fired a few people in my time, hated doing it regardless of the reasons behind the decision.

in effect... yes.... lol

because the railway knowledge that our department needed was so specific (i was a manager at elderly/disabled assistance and european travel) they basically thought money saved was worth more than the experience they lost....

and found they were wrong....

at one stage they wanted use to put a booklet/bible to train the people who were taking our jobs.... to which we said not a chance!!!

"On the back of the other thread, I've been thinking about the other side:

I got fired once... working for a company with about 60 staff... the MD stopped the wages for every staff member for 2 days in 1 month due to them changing the accounting software... most of the staff didn't get paid well..

I was 3rd in command... and thought it was immoral... so I told him it was totalitarian and he was running a dictatorship. ... I put my head above the pulpit.. and it got chopped off.. "

It was immoral. You did the right thing so feel proud of that.

I was made "redundant" in my old job.

I was working there for over a year and a half after they decided they "didn't need me"

My boss was a complete and utter bitch, used to call me names and tell me what to eat at lunch and how to dress outside of work. In the end I think she fired me because I refused to kiss her arse and roll over and take her shit. Instead I stood my ground and battled my corner as much as I could.

She told me she didn't need me anymore even though I could clearly see they severely struggled when I wasn't there so I shrugged and moved on from it.

I was given a months notice and found a job that paid better and had less hours with a better boss and more flexibility so I can't complain.

I was made redundant according to her and it was nothing to do with my performance is what she said to my face but then turned around to HR and slagged me off. HR was completely on my side and helped me out by offering time off for interviews and was there when I needed them. Thank God there was someone decent there.

Everyone else was very annoyed I was leaving cause I was reducing a lot of people's work loads and doing a lot myself and now everyone would struggle without me.

Few weeks into my notice I heard they were looking for someone else.

But I don't give a fuck that company was a joke and I'm glad to be elsewhere where I'm treated like a person rather than cattle.

I'm happier now.

"I got fired by a major multi national company some years ago.

They have to offer you payment for a independent legal advice otherwise you can contest the Compromise Agreement later. It's to protect them not you. It sounds like their practices are pretty poor.

I hope you're doing something you enjoy now."

I'm not doing anything I ever planned on doing but it is worthwhile.

I'm a full time carer for my mum who has MS. I work 12 hours a week at a supermarket just for a bit of a break.

I don't have a career with any kind of prospects but some things are worth sacrificing.

I was called in to the office and sacked for "not selling enough polish". She started the next Monday.

I was young and naive and just accepted it. I felt humiliated and upset at the time. If it happened to me now I'd be asking difficult questions."

There and to the left a bit

Only through redundancy and as I'd been with the company 13 years at the time (and it was the days when pay offs were generous) they dangled a big fat cheque under my nose whilst also offering me the choice of finding something else internally - I took the money and ran, which in retrospect was a bad decision as I was then out of work for nearly 18 months and my ex (who up to that point had been amicable) decided she wanted a slice of the cheque (despite an "amicable" agreement having been reached previously) - so the pay off actually got spent keeping me afloat for 18 months and paying legal bills - all of which have had an impact on my life that is still felt today.

Yep - I was doing 100 hours a month and earning £360 a month, whereas others who were doing exactly the same jobs would earn £750+ a month. Actually, I didn't even get a chance to start the NVQ, so the company got very cheap labour for two months.

I had the last laugh though. The manager told me I was useless at the job and would never succeed in the care sector - so that summer, I got myself a nice job to support myself, went back to college and got my BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Health & Social Care. Being in that care home taught me that although I couldn't cope with the personal care, I want to enter into a career where I can help enrich people's lives.

Yes when I had a summer job when I was at college.

I was incharge of six trampolines at Brean leisure park.

I had a list of obligations in regards to health and safety to enforce. It turns out if parents can't control their children a college kid (although cool) has no chance. It was my first day and lasted 7 ish hours.

The manager uttered words like incompetent, lacks judgment.

To be honest it was a relief to be fired and I have never worked with kids since!

It's funny what people expect of the young and inexperienced.

One of the tasks I had for my Saturday job was collecting the cash from the tills. I was 14. The 'security' they gave me was the 15 year old lad I couldn't help but fancy. We would work out the longest route, using the lift that always broke down, and then get told that we were taking too long. During Christmas and the big summer sales we'd be collecting close to £20k each pick-up. That was a really huge amount back then and they let two teenagers be responsible for it.

Although when the inevitable theft of the biggest pick-up of the day happened it was the middle aged security guard who did it.

I was young new to actual work and after three months I just packed my laptop and drove back to UK with no one aware. I was furious with company and received threats following and my knowledge of the company meant I knew more than they wanted. In the end, it was best decision I ever made...now I'm happier and far richer than I could ever be doing said job. So I fired myself!

Yes. It felt shit to be honest.

After 10 years at a company I was approached by another firm and offered a more senior role, better pay, benefits. All was fine for a year but I then started to get the impression one of the managers had an issue.

Tasks got changed, I was getting meetings I was meant to go on postponed but there was nothing definitive that I could put my finger on.

Long story short, as it was a large corporate company the manager approached HR to get my contract terminated. Unfortunately, this manager wasn't the nicest and I was tipped off by a good friend that something was happening.

I then had a clear the air chat with the manager, with my phone in my pocket recording it all. For a couple of months things were uneasy but ticked along.

I was then due a review, which turned out to be a different manager and a HR bod who told me contract was terminated. I disagreed in the meeting with their reasons and explained I could prove it. Recording time

Whilst I got my notice period paid, the stress of having to find another job, coupled with having been so royally fucked over, meant that I struggled to get by. Fortunately I had good friends.

Each situation has at least two sides. Sorry for the ramble, peace out

"Yes.

Sorry for the ramble, peace out "

I hope things have worked out.

Yes that can happen, but I have 4 income streams, and unfortunately really enjoy the least lucrative. The most lucrative are begging me to do more than I can be bothered to do, and the other two are very safe unless we have a socialist revolution.

I don't enjoy my least lucrative but it provides a rich seam of knowledge I can use elsewhere...

When i was at school i was fired from my Sat job in boots. I think it was cause i took a day off with period pain. Hated that one anyway, dreaded going in and everything i did was wrong.

I left my PhD for what was sold to me as my dream job that I'd been wanting to get to for 5 years but when i got there it was not the job i applied for, or the one i accepted but a different role altogether. No one ever told me my job desciption or even who my manager was and i was given no training. I was so desperate to impress that i made mistakes all the time. That lasted 6 months. But it was an industry i was desperate to get into so kept trying and18 months later got a worse role at a better company. Better structure and limited training... still rubbish and fired after 6 months again.

Decided 12 years at uni wasn't enough to make me a scientist and eventually got a job in a call centre.

B & M Bargains

Twice, 1 job after another, both in probation.

The first one I thought was my dream job, and it would have been if I had been given a proper manager and the info to do my job, and an environment where they didn't monitor you every time you stepped away from your desk. Apparently 2 brews a day is too many... they said I didn't seem happy so decided to let me go.

2nd one I should have trusted my judgement, it sounded like a non-job and it was. The manager was a bitch. I was relieved she got rid of me for not doing my job (because I didn't know what my job was) cos I was about to walk anyway

"Yeah, fired from nearly every job I ever had I think, usually for being rebellious, but I've been self-employed for 30 odd years anyway so stuff 'em all lol!

It taught you to be self-employed.

Yes, I don't suffer fools at work I am afraid, and at least if I am the boss I can fire them!!

"Yep.. It sucked big time. And fuck you very much Mr Cameron for changing the labour laws.

Saw a solicitor who told me he would win my case in a heartbeat for the way it was handled.. Except now it wouldn't even go to court because for the first two years now they can get rid when they feel like it. "

I understand that the 2 year rule doesn't suit the employee but as a boss myself, it's a hell of a lot fairer as everything is always favoured towards them..

My experience is that employees start off well but then get 6 months into it and signs start to show.. With a month's training at the start of employment, 12months is too soon to get rid as they need more time to prove themselves... Doing discrete wind ups takes time to filter through so it's hard to judge if it's a person's character or they are trying to take the piss?

For example, I recently had a guy working for me, that I was getting pissed off with.. I gave him a deadline (Thursday) to complete his (easy) work and he failed.. Gave him a weeks compassionate leave to be with his mum the week after, I then noticed that he'd been looking at porn on the said Thursday.. He wanted a day off to move house inside his 7 day notice period for holidays, asked on the day of his mums funeral and I turned him down..

He then said he's going on the sick and said I was bullying him, well if he can sit wanking to porn while his mum was dying in work time, surely I was entitled to say no to the leave, especially as I'd given him the whole week off.. I admit that I could of done things a little better but he was very intelligent and was chipping away at me, not doing as instructed..

To cut it short, for once, the law backs up the employer, otherwise there's no point trying to expand the business and take more staff on IMO...

It's hard being a boss, employees just push boundaries alot of the time but I also do think employers can be too quick..

BTW, as soon as I mentioned that he'd been looking at porn on the works computer, he went quietly..

P.s. maybe my management skills could be better but I'm in the fortunate position of always been my own boss, so never been in the employees situation..

I was fired at 17 for my political allegiance to the SNP from the Coop. Was angry at the time, understandably, but got over it quickly. Got a job with rival supermarket and that manager ended up getting poached by the Coop and wanted me to go with him.

I opted for the bright lights of the Capital instead.

My first job as a 13 year old was delivering free local newspapers. No one ever reads that shit so I decided to cut out the middleman and started depositing them in the recycling bin rather than through the letterbox. Turns out that someone on my round actually DID read that shit and complained that they hadn't had one delivered for several weeks..........

The second time I was let go at the end of my probation period. It was in the cafe of a major supermarket chain. I was asked to break the law and change use by dates on food several times in my first few weeks. I refused and told my manager that if I witnessed others doing it I would report to environmental health. I was let go shortly after following through with my threat, the day after an EHO visit found lots of areas where legislation wasn't being followed

Once, when I was 19. I was working as a pizza deliverer and didn't turn up for a shift. The manager had changed my hours and didn't warn me. I didn't see it on the rota, as I have dyslexia. I think he was looking for a reason to sack me, as I just turned 19, when my wages would go up.

I've been made redundant twice, both times were pretty awful and frightening and neither were handled well, although in one case, it was understandable considering the pressure everyone war under.

I've also been sacked once for calling the operations director a complete cunt after he belittled my father dying.

No... I’ve always walked before they had the chance

Got made redundant once on a ‘last in, first out’ kind of deal...from a business travel agents..

It was just after 9/11 when the bottom kinda dropped out of air travel for a while, I had only been there 8 months and they gave me £150 for every month I’d worked plus an excellent reference so I was a happy bunny...

Plus I got a job the following week

"I was made "redundant" in my old job.

~Mia

Hurrah for HR and I'm glad to hear about the happy end.

"

HR get the brunt of the dramas at work. Don't envy them ahha. And thanks glad I found something else.

I've never been fired. I've left every job I've ever had because I moved somewhere else. It's one experience I'm personally glad I've never had (yet ).

As a fellow boss i personally feel 12 months is the appropriate time for unfair dismissal and 24 is... unfair.

The truth is there are bad companies as well as bad employees. Especially in certain industries like fashion, leisure and working with animials. Too many companies take advantage of young, naive employees that don't have many options. I'd also ban unpaid internships personally.

That said, i that making people pay for their cases was the right thing to do too.
