We are sons, brothers, dads, husbands, boyfriends etc. But many middle age men sink into depression at this stage of life. Sometimes, seemingly, without reason. Statistically, we are the most likely demographic to take our own lives. Government funding for mental health has all but gone. And the charities aren't enough to pick up the pieces.
With that in mind. I ask.
How are you doing?

In fine thank you but you raise a very important and serious point. The media often portray middle-aged men as the 'privileged' in society and your statistic is a worrying one and shows that not all is necessarily rosy!
I hope anyone feeling depressed whatever their age or gender is able to reach out and get the support they need! Don't suffer in silence!! |

Overcoming the men are strong and stand tall with no need of aid thing can be a tough step in itself. Hopefully it's becoming less so for those that need a helping hand. |

It's a daily struggle, some days are better than others.
Who knew rock bottom had a basement? Not me until I had to pick myself up.
If you're feeling depressed or anxious for a prolonged period of time then go see your GP, talk to friends about it, ring helplines, look up 'Andys man club' on Face book and look for a group near you. Get all the help you can!
Never give up!
You're stronger than you think!! |

I lost a close friend a few years back to depression. It seemed unexpected at the time. But really it wasn't. I just didn't pick up on it. And I now know that I probably could have prevented it.
Hindsight is cruel like that sometimes.
I could have visited more or sent more links to stupid cat videos. But I didn't. And neither did anyone else.
All I'm saying is. Look around at your friends, colleagues etc. And yourselves. Maybe today, you could make big difference with a small gesture. And if it's you that's getting eaten up by things. Reach out.
Most depression is a temporary stage in your life. Many, many people go through it. They might not have spoken about it. But they have beaten it. And so can you.

I think it's great that so many people on this forum have been brave enough to admit they have or had mental health problems and share their experiences and give advice. You should all be proud of yourselves!
It may only be a comment on a forum but for all you know somebody reading it may then decide to get help, you may have helped save their life! |
