As I wake up on this lovely Sunday morning. I wake up with a full on hard on. The same every single morning. Why does this happen? Is it to tell me it's still alive and ready to go  do women wake up wet every morning?  |

I did a little digging...
It seems that this question is not fully settled but there are a number of theories for mechanisms with at least some evidence. Prevailing opinion seems to be that all or a number of these probably contribute to the effect at once:
* Just as you wake up you're usually coming out of rem sleep. For men this coincides with a testosterone surge, inducing an erection.
* There's a bit in mammals' brains that's responsible for constantly sending a signal to suppress erections - apparently men's cocks naturally want to spring a boner all the time (is anyone surprised?  ).
This signal is weakened while you are asleep making it easier for erectile tissue to become aroused. Interestingly this effect occurs in women too who are also likely to have swollen erectile tissue (clit, g-spot etc.) during sleep (somebody must have measured that).
* Stimulus, either from the movement just before you wake up or the erotic components of dreams.
That covers potential mechanisms. For the broader meaning of why, it's thought that exercising the erectile tissue in this way every day keeps it healthy. |
