Recently gave my mates son a job with us. He's left school with no qualifications and this was a chance for him to learn a good trade. He's turned up for work this morning and said he's leaving as he's got a new job, collecting charity tins. I'm fuckin astounded that someone would throw away the chance to learn a trade to go work in a dead end job. When I asked why he was leaving he said its cause I shout at him occasionally. I think this indicative of today's youth, the snowflake generation that can't even cope with being shouted at?

Just wanted to rant.

If you need to resort to shouting to get your point across you're not a very good boss .

The thing is while learning a trade is undenuably a sensible thing to do it's not for everyone. He may fall on his arse or it may open doors. He found himself another job rather than just leave because he didn't like it so wish him well

Why bother shouting? When my apprentice fucks up he knows it because he a massive bollocking followed by a lesson in how not to fuck it up but not once do i shout at him. Your his boss its unprofessional to stand there and shout especially if tye customer is around!

Call me a snowflake but I'm not surprised he left. I wouldn't expect my team to stay with me if I shout at them.

But being shouted at is demoralising. It might have been considered charachter building back in the day, but times change.

The job wasn't for him and he's moved on. Rather that than him start messing you around by not turning up etc.

Worthing

The trade might not be what interests him. Needs to sit down with a careers advisor to find an interest/hobby and try and build on something from there. Forget about the money to start with. Just get into a job which you like doing and develop it.

I'll try and answer everyone without having to quote all. I don't claim to be a good boss; great leader or a manager. I'm just a tradesman trying to give a boy a start. We don't have customers as such so don't shout at him in front of anyone. I realise it's not everyone's way of working but he's not my first apprentice though he is the first to jack it. The trade is ceramic tiling and he's been with us six months

Haha I did that with a different departments manager before. He had short man syndrome.

All other managers started to actually give me some distance to do my job, it was bliss. My manager was always happy with by work

Perhaps he just wasn't enjoying the trade you were offering him.

In his defence, he has took the sensible option of getting another job before quitting, rather than just walking out and going on the dole.

People rarely quit over one issue, more often than not it is a combination of factors amd he chose the shouting as the least painful excuse.

People of our generation believe the "snowflake" generation have a sense of entitlement. Perhaps your anger is more directed at him because he turned down a trade that is "good enough for you".

A shit job can be made good by a good manager. A good job can be made shit by a shit manager.

Maybe he had enough of the shouting. I used to work in a furniture store and got promoted twice my second promotion sent me too another store and the manager was a dick.. He'd scream and shout at his staff for minor things and I had enough of seeing young lads belittled by being screamed at so I confronted him over it gave him a bit of his own medicine after that he rearly shouted at the young lads again infact they stopped quiting there jobs too. A stern tone gives a better reaction than shouting at your employees

its just the individual - we have youngsters some are amazing and some will do anything that involves sitting on their arse for as long as possible - but we also have my generation who do exactly the same - the a lazy ones get 'told' - via supervisions and on 3 months trial - if they dont work they dont get a job -

Today's youth are no different to any other days youth. There are lazy ones for sure but the majority work hard. Look around on a Sunday or late at night in a supermarket, check your local FE college, ask about apprentices. You'll see youngsters working hard and kids with ambition.

Tarring a whole generation with the same brush based on your experience of one isn't fair.

My old boss used to shout and often it wasnt due to the bad or lazy work of an employee but more down to the fact he could not cope when things got stressfull or when there was time pressure's.

His response was to verbally attack his employees and to make them feel responsible for things that they had no control over.

It got to a point where I was either going to quit or assault him. We had a huge barney when I refused to back down but I was supprised when 2 other employees came over and told him that I was right and draged me away from the situation.

After that point no one would talk to him and they actively started avoiding him. Not my doing just how things developed.

If your shouting at him maybe he just decided being happy was more important than whatever time he had left on his apprenticeship.

Well played to him for finding a job instead of just quiting.

I honestly think today's generation are brought up in a non competitive environment at school, Jeremy corbyn on the telly telling them all they deserve £15 an hour for stacking shelves, it's not really their fault that they're a bunch of snowflakes, as parents though we need to instill a working ethic into them or else they're going to struggle

Shouting has its place if said employee is a complete fuckwit endangering himself and others, frequent shouting is bad management though

When you give someone written instructions as to what tiles go in which room for 16 flats and he proceeds to put them all in the wrong rooms I think a little shouting is justified. He doesn't get shouted at for nothing...he gets shouted at cause he's an incompetent dick.

In that case you're well rid surely. However if you truly believe an entire generation are hopeless you might struggle to replace him. How about one of the 60+ year old waspies that the pensions minister suggests should retrain?

I don't think you understand that shouting at another person is a form of verbal abuse. Go on a course or something you need to get some help with your attitude. You are on a sex site, slagging off a young person, mentioning his "stupidly",thinking you have the right to belittle him because he is your son's friend and you have given him a job. He's not a "snowflake" YOU are an abusive bully.

He's an example of my old job as a labourer I would do everything on the fucking site whilst the boss stood round picking his arse smoking endless cigarette s and drinking red bull whilst barking his orders at me and occasionally making the odd hilarious racist joke whilst I'm working the cunts whole site, The other labourer his right hand man took over 200£ a day and did a hell of a lot less physical work and got all the good jobs whilst I had all the hard ones, i.e in one day with a 500kg max dumper I had to move 10 tonnes of Purbeck stone from one end of the site to the other I did it it in a little of 3 hours, I was still was paid less than minimum wage for a labourer for 6 months and I literally didn't have time to fart all day if I did take my time like every other cunt I would get the short straw again, so very glad to start a stone masonry apprenticeship with a reputable company, now maybe some of the venom on the words of my last comment will lose potency now you see where I'm coming from

I don't know what's wrong with the youth of today

Wondering lost, it's true what they say

And who is to blame, TV and magazines

They would have you believe that everyday is Halloween

Why, when I was a kid, playing in the ditches

Living in fear of Satan and the witches

The whole world was made of wood and smelled like gasoline

The days were at least twice as long and the grass was green

Running for my life, I was cursed by a talking snake

I'd walk all day and throw rocks across a bottomless lake

There was a killer in the woods who would whistle

Once in a while I could hear him shoot his pistol

And the other kids hated me, but like a martyr

I drove myself harder and harder

Blood in my eyes, scrubbing to get the dirt off

I didn't say much, didn't like to take my shirt off

I was quick but I didn't know the meaning of pain yet

I would visit Father Bob and he would show me his train set

Tell me a story, offer me a glass of milk

Send me on my way with a question to ask myself

The rain didn't bother me, the search had meaning

Church was good but I'd rather be dreaming

High speed horseshoes, harnesses and heavy string

The problem is today they got an answer for everything

No it's not I am one of those need a shout at before theatch and a pint and hug after guys. So that is where I thrive, but when day after day your not even getting what other labourer s are getting and your doing more work and your work standards only keep improving and you know the boss has just took half a million profits and then when he gets some shit or someone messes up his day like he did to mine most days he takes it to the next level and just be's a nasty cunt, light physical attacks and intimidation then you go fuck herself and find some other cunt.

"He's an example of my old job as a labourer I would do everything on the fucking site whilst the boss stood round picking his arse smoking endless cigarette s and drinking red bull whilst barking his orders at me and occasionally making the odd hilarious racist joke whilst I'm working the cunts whole site, The other labourer his right hand man took over 200£ a day and did a hell of a lot less physical work and got all the good jobs whilst I had all the hard ones, i.e in one day with a 500kg max dumper I had to move 10 tonnes of Purbeck stone from one end of the site to the other I did it it in a little of 3 hours, I was still was paid less than minimum wage for a labourer for 6 months and I literally didn't have time to fart all day if I did take my time like every other cunt I would get the short straw again, so very glad to start a stone masonry apprenticeship with a reputable company, now maybe some of the venom on the words of my last comment will lose potency now you see where I'm coming from

Your boss probably went through exactly the same when he started out ..... Maybe when you have been there a few years and you get the new lad you'll be doing the same He was given lots of help from his gypsy daddy. I didn't have the luxury of a father let alone a daddy

No father or daddy ....lame reasoning ...my dad walked in on my mum when I was 2 ,mum had more balls than him and brought us up well ,and yes we got shouted at ,and yes we were praised when we were good ......no ones gonna give you an easy ride through life ..sorry but there not ,take a look on the mirror and ask yourself now your a man what kind of man you want to be ...a doer or shirker blaming everything from society to lack of a parent ...the choice is yours my friend Dude I have a job and lot of people in society have helped me massively when they didn't have to and then on the other side of the coin other people have taken advantage of massively and thats what I'm trying to get across is if your taking advantage and you know you are don't be surprised when it blows up I'm your horrible face. My life has been far from easy pal, which I'm going into, he said that my old boss probably worked from the bottom like my grandad did going from a farm boy in Italy owing money for food throughout the year to a hotel owner in England and he's 4ft nothing genuine working class kid come good. He didn't he had lots of help from daddy."

Then maybe the guy your working for isn't who you should be working for ,

Find another job and see how that goes ,if your boss is a genuine twat then maybe your better away from it ,but maybe just maybe he knows your made of good stuff so continues to push you ..there's no accounting for how people see training

My grandad was supporting his father and running his farm at 14 years old , now that's a man, sending money back home at 16 to help feed his parents, now that's a real man's man

Then you already had the answer my friend ,being a roofer I know how hard it is to start at the bottom in a trade ,but the rewards really do outweigh the shit eventually

Good luck mate

Different strokes for different folks, some will want to work hard, some will want to work smart...and some just don't have a days work in them.

At that age the lad is probably still figuring out which one of those he wants to be, not everyone is cut out to be a tradesman, that's why everybody isn't doing it!

Here's an example of my boys work day, load the tiles into the relevant rooms, get the rooms cleaned out. Get water, take rubbish away and some grouting. When he's working with me he's asked to cut tiles, cut lengths of trim and keep me supplied with tiles. All the while he's doing this I'm putting the tiles on the wall. He's usually back home for 3 and gets paid 300 a week. All in all its not the worse job in the world. Yeah I bollock him but only if he fucks up which seems perfectly fair to me.

See now that sounds like a fair deal I wouldn't mind doing that job at all, plus I imagine once he would put up tiles he'd get more money. I was responsible for a four house job and all the tradespeople and their materials and rubbish, plus all our tools and all the labour jobs which is everything on a building site and I was given no PPE, swallowed so much shit over those months plus I was, some people fuck it up for others and vice versa

He's resigned, its not what he wanted. Its difficult for you to understand but you have to accept his decision.

Obviously shouting at someone in certain jobs isn't right, but if you an apprentice or a labourer or even a skilled worker at some point if you you fuck up someone will shout it you, as long as it's not abusive or a constant barrage I don't really see the problem with it.

"Recently gave my mates son a job with us. I think this indicative of today's

youth, the snowflake generation that can't even cope with being shouted at?

Just wanted to rant."

Should send them up chimneys at the age of 5 like they used to in Victorian times. That toughens them up.

Anyone born after 1900 don't know there born

Kids Eh

"When you give someone written instructions as to what tiles go in which room for 16 flats and he proceeds to put them all in the wrong rooms I think a little shouting is justified. He doesn't get shouted at for nothing...he gets shouted at cause he's an incompetent dick. "

Take the cost of the tiles out of his wages perhaps? I don't know if that's legal but it's the kind if thing they do at my work. You break it, you replace it. Same kind of thing I guess.

The only time I would ever shout at an employee is if they were in immediate danger, and that's shouting to them rather than at them. I rarely shout at anything ever, so they know if I do it's fucking serious.
