Neonicitinoids, the group of insecticides that have been under investigation in connection with loss of bees, had new research against them published this last week. How do you perceive them being continued or banned?
Last week's results from several countries in the new study, showed - amongst other things - colonies who'd consumed it losing a quarter of their young bees the following year; bees away from the crops had it inside them, probably from leaking into water and wildflowers.
Would you use these chemicals? Or are bees too important, as they pollinate and thus produce many of our crops?
These specific chemicals can last for a very long time, as they're not deactivated once used.
Thoughts? |

"they're actually inventing artificial bees (pollinators) to combat this.
this is how much of a shit anyone cares about the environment, imo."
I've seen the Farmers Union and chemical manufacturers on TV trying to wiggle out of doing anything - it's disgusting.
I'm assuming that many of us also have a build-up of these within our bodies.
It seems like they're repeating the behavior of denial, like cigarette producers did. |

yes i class our bodies as part of the environment. i'm pretty sure all these chemicals cause damage to all neural systems. i'd like to see more GM foods ideally.
people are scared of being poor, not managing or coping, and having less. i think this is the main reason. they are doing alright by doing what they're doing now.
and i guess it's also feasible that without these chemicals there won't be enough food to feed everyone. bees dying is just a consequence of that also, we can still pollenate if we have to, but there probably is a better way and even these artificial bees are gonna cost money too. but money will win out over anything else.
do wonder why are formers not concerned about working with these chemicals and living near to them? |

The world can produce more than enough food for the population but it's power, money and thus supply that can make it appear that our huge population is at risk.
We are just another piece of the environment, here for now
I'm assuming the EU will widen the ban on these chemicals, with UK officials screaming Brexit, as they forge a get out clause.
A lot of the problem is too much power in the hands of the very wealthy, who are little interested in much more than shorter term gain. Our governments frequently reflect that in how they shape policy, laws and evade responsibilities for corporations |

Have eaten an organic diet since 2000. Been vegi since a young child.
Grow my own when where can, and organic only. Defo no Gm seed. No seeds from Monsanto!
Its a dangerous game we are playing with the environment that provides our food. Its sad that the soil in most places has lost its worth and well its not real anymore..more a synthetic soil. That's what is like for most agricultural practice's in america.
I hate what's happening to our food. What's sprayed on it...what its been fed with.
I eat bee pollen daily and also eat lots of honey in diet. I love bees and have kept them before.
If they do not have a bad enough time of it with mobile phone masts and the effects on their homing system...only getting worse as we step up into higher microwave levels.
Yet now as you have stated are other bigger wider issues, effecting them and guess soon us in turn.
Its the same as the morons in charge fucking the water underground in some areas with the fraking.
I noticed someone saying would love to see more gm. Burn all gm. It has no right to be planted in our soil..it will create super pests...the need for stronger chemicals etc.
Not truly in mood to write all the facts here about gm or Monsanto for that matter... pure evil.
I've read some of your posts in past years..always very informative |

Thank you. I'm inclined to agree upon GM foods, which I view as a technology developed for dominance of food production and supply wealth. And a restriction of the power into a very small and too powerful a handful of corporations. Those owning the patent rights and interdepent suite of products that must be used exclusively together, present a nightmare scenario for the world that they don't care for. The opposite of course, happy to pollute it with their poisons.

"There are alternatives to these chemicals, I knew someone who worked in the biotech industry making a safe alternative. Sadly like most things, people need educating in the benefits of this."
You're right! Sadly what I imagine will happen is that we'll get neonicotinoids 2.0, still with dangers but sold upon their benefits and lower harm level in some selected area. |

If it's proven to be harmful to bees/the evironment to a reasonable level it will be banned like so many chemicals before them.
If not proved beyond fringe conspiracy theory levels it won't. |

You you're perfectly ok with the artifically induced polyploidy which created pretty much everything you grow and is itself a very crude GM but find more refined versions wrong?
(Not that GM crops would be of any real use for home growing though) |

If they are bad for bees they are bad for us too. So an alternative needs to be found.
I like bees, I have lots in my garden this year as I grew lots of flowers. |

I guess one perhaps is a little miss informed? Check ones sources perhaps..
Because how I've read...Monsanto has been buying up all organic seed supplies around world and then closing them. They been buying up other seed suppliers around the world and closing them or keep running but change the seed stock.
I notice you refer to polyploidy. Not many people know of such. I guess you are excluding natural polyploidy...you know when a plant naturally alters its genes to adapt and live in a changing climate or environmental pollutants.
I was referring to the purchase or organic seed stock to start with and through the whole cycle.
Not all seeds are the same.
Its like bread or the flour that's in it. Most flour has about 19 preservatives etc added to it...then also the fact that most bread has been fortified with vitamins...all synthetic...a chemical shit storm...if its not bad enough our foods are grown with chemicals by they in most every day food groups for most people, sorry strayed off topic a little.
So here's what's happening. Its not gonna be just about gm crop seed for commercial use...gm seed will replace all other seeds...one will get stuck with a seed that needs a certain chemical to grow well..and ever advancing nature will work around and so on.
Gm should be out lawed before we fuck things up...but its already out there in the fields of UK...whatever the masses get told |

Check agricultural chemicals across Europe as a whole.
Weed killers are an example both in agricultural practice's and in urban settings.
Most stuff banned in Europe. Not banned in UK...allowed here despite the data. Morons!
What you know of DEFRA spraying all of Dartmoor this summer with a chemical to kill the bracken. I can't recall chemical name..but when checked it. Is banned all round the world apart from Britain and USA...yet DEFRA spraying it from planes...public been kept in dark...its actually very dangerous...as gets into ground water through wash off..would need to read up negative effects on human body but is loads. No wonder banned else where...but that's DEFRA for u, bunch of idiots |
