I assume you shop around whenever your policies are up for renewal (or more often if no cancellation fees)? Never automatically renew as new business prices are usually lower than renewal prices...

I gave up on pet insurance years ago, well 12 years ago. I've saved a fortune having 2 dogs. They haven't cost me a penny since then apart from food.

Can you attach Smart Boxes to your horses to show you're a careful rider or reduce your annual mileage?

With all insurance, you should only take it out if you couldn't afford to deal with consequences if something does go wrong...

I don't take out warranties on electrical goods, anything goes wrong I can afford to replace...

House burns down then I couldn't.

No idea how much pets can cost of they get ill, but guessing a horse could become pretty expensive?

What would the insurance have cost? Will there be ongoing bills related to the op?

I hope your dog is OK.

Insurance has been invaluable for my boy. He's been though so many wars it's unbelievable value. Grass seeds in his throat, grass slicing his retina/cornea, thorns puncturing his retina, most recently a back operation. I don't know what I'd do without insurance.

Without moving all plans to one insurer and trying to bargain out a good policy I don't know what you could do. Mine is a life policy that means if changed to a different insurer, pre-existing conditions won't be covered without a hike in premium. Over the years they have been great though, so not looking to change.

One thing is if you pay in one lump sum it is cheaper than spreading it - but only by £30 .. it may be more for you though.

This is his 2nd op that has cost that much, plus half a dozen other visits at 100-200 quid a time fir tye same condition. So probably £5k over his lifetime. Insurance premiums would have been about half that.

Will defo be getting insurance for the next mutt, or putting the equivalent of the insurance premiums in a savings account for vets fees.

Luckily we can afford the ops, but I can imagine a lot of people would have to consider putting their pet to sleep as they couldn't afford some of the real big bills! A friend had a dog with hip problems, the op cost £9k!

Not sure about the rules for recommending commercial entities so I won't, but...

If you're going to get it get Life Cover, this way if your pet(s) have a claim it won't bump up the premiums on renewal. If you don't and claim for something one year the premium could rise significantly the next.

My dog costs about £30 per month in insurance with an excess of £100 but one significant op can make it worthwhile (although obviously hoping not to need it).

You cant go wrong with aviva, my dog had cancer treatment, joint replacement, and retena attachment. She has a lifetime policy and none of these items have got any disqualifications. Where as pet plan, wont insure one on my horses leg due to a tendon injury. So basically if he broke that leg in a freak accident, no help from them

You need to get the maximum cover you can afford. Policies will range from £2500 - £7500, the more expensive the cover the more expensive the policy. There are excesses with each but if you visit for the same condition you can claim this back. The cheapest is often not the best so look around for an insurer with good reviews. If you get a life policy this should remain around the same price for life (inflation will affect eventually), as opposed to yearly which you can switch for cheaper policies but if you do claim, you'll find it hard to cover the same condition when you switch unless you pay a premium or higher excess for that condition.

I only listed a few ops my boys had but to give example - he had grass seeds in his throat. They thought it was an abscess so antibiotics, then ultrasound, then CT scan (both inconclusive), then exploratory keyhole op. With various consults and referrals, all in cost was £4300 as I remember. I'm with petplan and they have been nothing but good throughout any payment needed for treatment - they are tied to most vets but are expensive.

no matter

I am really glad I pay insurance for my birds two of which have thankfully been very healthy over the last 25 years.

The other 3 have had treatments, two years ago one got egg bound twice and was hospitalised with subsequent treatment just under 2k and then a year later an infection resulting in an op up to limit of 2500.The premium is now over 300 a year.

The other two have had various incidents requiring treatment which was covered.

Thankfully the costs are nothing like that of dogs especially after the age of 7 when they make you pay a percentage as well.

I would hate to be faced with a huge bill and the decisions that have to be made from people without insurance.

I am the one at work who chases these people to pay their vet bills or their flipping excess! If you can't afford to pay dont have a pet. Drives me potty.

Dont use E&L or subsidiaries of .. they are the worst payers ever.

Pet Plan are the best but whichever you choose to get cover for life not a yearly policy.

If they develop a *skin problem for instance which could end up costing 200 a month for life.

A year policy 4k cover will only cover for 1 year and then the condition will be forever excluded.

Another trick people try is go to different vets in the hope of hiding stuff. The insurance companies want history from all vets. Without history they will not pay.
