Yes, its a thing.
There is a simulator on the internet that shows what would happen if an Asteroid hit the earth
For example
If an asteroid hit the size of Wembley Stadium made of Iron hit London at a speed of 17 km/s at a 45 degree angle
The crater would be the size of London.
The airblast would shatter windows from Newcastle to Paris.
The fireball would be visible to the naked eye in Edinburgh.
And the seismic Shaking would be felt in Northern Italy, Spain, and Norway.

Who remembers Hale bopp passing by 90 million miles away!.
2029 we get a pretty big asteroid brush us I think about 30 thousand miles away.. That's about as close as they come |

I seem remember the Hale-Bopp Comets tail was visible as it headed around the Sun having past earth...... I was chuffed too see it... |
