Personally having seen him play in Leicester twice when he was alive, i would say a genious his football play was just a one off.....his film star looks and laid beck attitude was one of a guy who couldnt care less about life......and just live it.
Shame the drink got hold of him but hey thats show business and fame, but take the drink away he was allways a gentleman allways polite and would never refuse an autograph.
R.I.P....George Best .... |

I worked with the Surgeon who did his Liver Transplant at The Cromwell Hospital in London. I also sat next to him at breakfast at Champneys in Petersfield when I stayed there for a week the same time he was recuperating. He definitely had an eye for the ladies.
He was a fantastic footballer but just could not control his cravings |

An absolute icon , the man who changed the face of football .
Say what you will about his demons , but the man was a genius with God given talent and he made the game into a media driven commodity .

"In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol... It was the worst 20 minutes of my life."
Football wise, he was a legend. Looking back on footage, he was absolutely brilliant to watch.
But, as a younger person, he's just known as Calum Best's dad who was an alcoholic.
So unless you look deeper than what the media portrays, face value tells a different picture. |

Just curious...would be still be the icon in todays age as he was in his day? Or has todays skills out grown him? I'm not a football as you can guess, but world records in athletics are always being beaten than my icons in my day? |

My problem with him is who he played for. Northern Ireland he's fantastic best player ever.
Man U can't stand the man he not played in my team.
Well am a Liverpool supporter.
As a person who I see on the walls of belfast every day.I see a man that died to young.
And I really do appreciate his skills.
As someone who comes from just around the corner in East Belfast. |

That's what I was thinking, don't think some people on here even follow football. I was only young when he was playing, but from what I have read and seen he was a football genius. You don't get to grace places like old Trafford and get paid if you can't play lol
I too am a Liverpool fan |

George Best used both feet pretty equally, was fairly quick, very good in the air for his size, and wasnt afraid to make or take a tackle. His balance and ball control were superb. He did his fair share of work for an attacking player. In short he was world class, and still makes some of those who followed look like clowns. He would be, for example, twice the player of a Beckham.
For an idea how tough the game could be in the "olden days" have a look at the "highlights" of the FA Cup final replay between Chelsea and Leeds on youtube.
The downside was obviously that George was the first football superstar, and i suppose that side of life became more attractive than having lumps knocked out of him twice a week! |

The pitch's were 'heavier' some like ploughed fields,so were the balls, the tackling certainly was, sliding tackles,Norman hunter,Tommy Smith plenty of hard men back then,so with the control and vision Best had along with easier conditions n more help from refs in today's game, yeah he'd be up there with the 'best',end of the day, doesn't matter people's success or otherwise, look at some other Irishmen north and south Higgins n lynott,if your pretty disposed to a condition whether your bin man or superstar life turns out as it does, even today with all the help on offer |

I think the fitness and pace of the game would out do him today rather than the skills. Sports training and nutrition has moved on so much in the last 20 years that none of the players from his generation would have a chance now. Of you could argue that if he had a modern fitness and diet than maybe he could still be an elite player but the reality is that you need a different physical specimen to cope with how the game was then (slower with men knocking lumps out of eachother) than now (faster with high risk of injury). |

What your missing is natural ability out of your theory.
Pele...juninho...gazza and bestie all were gifted players....that modern day diets and new training methods could only have improved them. |

Not quite, it assumes their bodies would cope with the intensity of modern training. I'm just saying that should not be a given |

He selfishly fucked up the gift of someone else's liver

A bit harsh mate....I think you have to understand the levels of addiction.
I don't disagree in some way though I blame the experts for giving him that liver as he was setup to fail. |

So was he to blame or the people who give it to him?
And I don't mean the donors...as they give without knowing where it will go. |

Gwanny in a triage situation I would have awarded him low priority if I known his pre-existing condition was self inflicted....

I'm fully trained in the use of equipment for dealing with such eventualities.....
On that subject though .... it was common place on helicopter flights heading to and from the rigs to place larger passengers closest to the emergency exit which in its own way presented a greater danger to those who could be held back in an escape situation ........
However during management of major emergency assessment we were expected to save the majority not the minority....

Actually Stan was from Teesside...
On board the rig he was the most wonderfully funny camp guy you could ever wish to meet but onshore you would never think he was anything other than 100% macho .....

My George Best story ...
Man U we're playing Luton in a pre season freindly and they were training on the local playing fields across the road from my school. I along with many others bunked off and watched them train.
I was mesmerised seeing my heroes, Law, Charlton and Best running around feet away from me. After they'd finished I chased after George for an autograph he turned and told me to "fuck off" ......
My hero a man I'd idolised has upset me until word had got around and my mates were coming up to me saying with, awe and admiration in their voices: "Wow George Best told you to fuck off!" ... the god of football had spoken to me, so all was well.
His star dulled over the years and as he fell from grace I began to despise him. Then, having met alcoholics (some to close for comfort) I began to understand him and the admiration I'd felt for him as a boy returned a little ... |

He was born with football talent, it doesn't matter one bit about nutrition and diet to start with
It all starts at school you have talent then people spot you and you progress. He would still survive in the modern game, because he has talent. If him and me were born ten years ago we would be approaching secondary school and he would be in the football team maybe even the county team. Me who wasn't any good wouldn't be and he would get all the help getting to the top |

"Bump it's on 2 now "
He was a footballing genuious no doubt about that but i have yet to see a piece of film where he was bad mouthed swearing and generally obnoxious to people even the press ???.
George was the first football super star and he was the flag ship to others in his wake.
like all first things it takes time for all to get used to it fame money adulation change etc, i dont think he liked star dom but yes he liked the money the women but underneath he was an ordinary guy with a spectacular talent.
R.I.P....George there never will be in this modern time a soccer super star like you .
