Why dont females like Sci Fi
Jump to: Newest in thread
Was Having this conversation with some female friends at the weekend and i had to agree i,ve never had a Gf that could stand anything sci-fi for longer than 10 seconds . So any fab members want to confess their hatred for captain kirk , light sabers , and hyperdrive units and tell us why ? |

depends on the type of horror. Mine loves exorcist / Ring type horror. Can't stand the current pain-porn saw type stuff though. |

You should give some of the Zombie books a try, lots of fairly new ones. |

"I love horror, I've yet to meet a man who will sit and watch any with me though!!
See sweeping generalisations... they just don't work!!! what horror
"
Any horror, I love everything from Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, to The Saw movies. Although they are very different levels of horror. I adore Pans Labyrinth, at the other end of the scale I've just watched the After Dark Originals films. They aren't too bad. But I've yet to find a horror that genuinely scares me. |

it's not only females
i detest both sci-fi and horror as genres
no interest in them whatsoever
that's a primary reason i just can't be gay - i just can't get my head round the attraction with sci-fi, horror, musical theatre, kylie or madonna |

oops I meant I like sci fi not hate it.
I do confess that I prefer the books / films that have no connection to earth though.
Saying that one of the funniest books I have read was Armageddon the Musical. Now that would be my kind of soap opera.
bte this girlie does not watch soaps or big brother |

you should try some of the other Bob Ramkin Books if you liked Armageddon, they are all just as funny also look at Tom Holt and Terry Pratchett |

I have read a few of Ramkin books. Not so keen on Pratchett though.
My fave is Raymond E Feist for fantasy fiction but have read everything he has done |

I can't bare to watch chick-flix and rom-coms.
I really enjoy watching sci-fi, thriller and action movies.
I like watching horror movies and live in hope one day they will make one which actually scares the bejeezus out of me.... instead of making me laugh. |

I was too young to see Exorcist when it first came out. When they released it again I psyched myself up to be scared, even went to the midnight showing and spent all through the film laughing |

Try some ot the original Japanese horror like The Ring. Much better than the American remake. |

I have... it just doesn't scare me.
As for Paranormal Activity ... I watched that in bed, alone, in the dark, with the door open... I laughed when she was dragged out of bed. |

I think women in general like being entertained emotionally and with great care, whereas more blokes are impressed with visuals. This includes sex of course, but also extends to general entertainment. Sci-fi tends to go for the all out visual front more which is why more men like it than women.
If you were to imagine a one to ten scale with the film at one being Zombie-gore lasercannon 3 and the film at ten being called "Learning to cope with Corey's coma" a 3 hour epic about a mother coming to terms with her son being in, yes, a coma, then a lot of women would tend to watch films from ten to six, whereas more blokes would watch one to five. By no means is this exclusive however... |

Haven't seen Ginger Snap, just looked on Play.com, and won't be paying £18.79 on the chance it might scare me.
I have all the original Asian Extreme such as The Ring, The Eye, The Grudge etc. Again, don't scare me, I too live in hope that one day a horror film will scare me, rather than make me laugh.
Although it would probably be banned as unfit for general consumption!!! |

I think that anyone, not just females, who isn't into Sci-Fi just doesn't quite get the fact that good science fiction isn't necessarily about robots hitting each other.

Hey, yeah great, one of the convention used to be affectionately be called 'Midbonk'
Beam me up scotty, reminds me of the line in Spaceballs, where she says scotty beamed me twice last night.

watching progarams like star trek when i was young gave me the interest in reading about quantum physics, artificial intelligence( data best character), and what Iam really glad to see is that many of the ideas in startrek have become reality or are feasably possible, with our technological progress(rightly or wrongly) we basically are on the verge of some new revolutionary types of progress... really think about it thru the ages that we go thru, iron age, steam age, nuclear etc...and the very important age of the computer.
I can predict in possibly the next 50 years, cybernetics,A.I way in advancement of whats here now will be here- now A.I will be possibly the most important step in human advancement if we ever have a thinking machine it will of course change our perception of what "life" really is.
It amazes me people can sit and slag of science fiction as ludicrous, when I know that it has indeed shaped some of our greatest progressions as a civilisation.
anyway am off to get back to my readytosuck programmed cybersexbot x |

The same here! Too much CGI makes them funny...which is not the response the film makers were hoping for! |
