There and to the left a bit |
Think you're thinking of The Princess Louise in Holborn - not been for an age but definitely had character the last time I went.
Lots of pubs in London with that - some of which have been there for years, just a shame that pubs generally seem to be being edged out by theme bars or cookie cutter Wetherspoons type places |

Hard one to choose up here in the bountiful land of Yorkshire
We've got pubs dating back to the 1500s and a huge following the the "real ale" type of pub.
One of my favourites at the moment is mostly candle lit and only serves real ales, nothing available from the major brands. |

One of the best and most characterful pubs I've ever been to is "Bessie's" aka The Dyffryn Arms at Pontafen Nr Fishguard in deepest, darkest Wales. To visit this place is like stepping back in time 100 years. No electricity, quality beer served from a jug, and a fantastic, unique and most welcoming atmosphere. A bunch of friends and I spent an amazing Sunday afternoon / evening there years ago and I still remember it fondly. Magical pub.
Has anyone else visited Bessie's? |

The Wykeham Arms in Winchester:
At 250-odd years old, the pub bursts with history. It used to be a brothel and also put Nelson up for a night (some say the events coincided).
The eccentric bar is a bit of a mustn’t-miss experience. Tankards and school canes hang from the ceiling and you can sit at old worn school desks. It's close to Winchester Cathedral and I eat and drink there a lot.
It gets my thumbs up. |

The "trip" is a fantastic pub but not even the oldest in Nottingham despite what they claim. The salutation and the bell, both in the city centre, are older.

"I went for the first time to 'The Prospect of Whitby' overlooking the Thames at the weekend, apparently it's the oldest riverside tavern and dates back to 1520!
"
Used to frequent there when I was studying at QMW, along with Lord Rodney's Head on Mile End Rd (sadly no more) |

Time team did a special on the three pubs some years ago. They concluded that the bell was the oldest pub, the trip had the oldest cellars and the sal was the oldest building.
My personal favourite of them all has always been the bell |

Op. I absolutely love that pub. The tales of the crusades who used to start off from there and the Ship above the bar that no one will ever touch because of the bad luck around it. It s beautiful pub. |

The Free Trade in Newcastle. Great views down the Tyne, great ale and grafetti in the toilets from the 1970s.
If in Nottingham, try The Malt Cross, just around the corner from The Bell. Used to be an old music hall, and has been largely restored as such. |

The "highway man" in sourton, devon, has to be quite unique... have actually fucked in there twice...most unusual energy in the place...and the pub itself...so much eye candy of weird and wonderful.
Another great place is Britain's remotest pub. Ive sailed there bit you can walk the 20 odd miles over big mountains...stop off and swim with dolphins if they in the bay..that's at "the old forge" in knoydart...Scotland |

"The willow near Cambridge has a tee pee bed and swings haystacks
In there garden "
There's a few nice ones in Cambridge! I love The Eagle, the back room with the bomber crew's names on the ceiling always makes me fill up.
Locally The Alma here in Harwich is a cracking "proper" pub. The Ship is the most interesting but always empty... |

Has anyone else visited Bessie's?" No I,ve not visited there but its when you mention quality beer served from a jug we have one in our local village that still does this if needed which it usually is, this pub has history and character perhaps one of the reasons why? thou you mention 100 years back we have a few others that period also and a (bit) older which they would have once served from the jug with but alas no longer, and its very true the village pub is all part of our heritage we have lost 3 here in the last 5 years and between the 3 of them there would have been around 300 years service very sad indeed, period pubs add character of which so much usually has been lost in the neibourhood. |

Yes I love anything like that nostalgic with winchester cathedral around the corner you can,t go wrong there usually where cathedrals are there will be a hub of old habitation around or nearby be it a pub or old house pity they did away with the old school cane 40 years on and our local school misses them badly. |

I used to go to Tommy Ducks regularly as a student before we hit the Conti or Brahms & Liszt. Great pub - shame it's no longer there |
