Quote from BBC" a diner who was turned away from a restaurant for wearing sandals had his evening saved by a homeless man who offered him his boots.

Akbar Badshah, from Bradford, drove "for an hour" to celebrate his wife's birthday at Fazenda's in Manchester but was told he needed different footwear."

I think this shows whats really lacking in the British understanding behind the purpose of rules. I find most British people are reluctant to think about why the rule is in place and how to enforce it sensibly, other than a literal interpretation.

Clue: When you think that a tramps shoes make your restaurant more classy than sandals you are missing the fucking point!

Reminds me of that scene from The Inbetweeners when he has to borrow a tramps pissy shoes to get into the London nightclub!

Whilst I agree with you to a degree (and I must confess to having no further details on this particular case) I guess a rule is a rule and when subjectivity starts being applied it creates potential new problems of it's own - e.g. claims of discrimination (well HE was let in without the right shoes, but I wasn't!! This is discrimination!!)

I think subjectivity and discretion are good things, they require higher cognitive thinking for a start.

It did remind me of the inbetweeners too which is why i can't believe it actually happened. I wonder if they suggested it to him "sir, there's a kind tramp over there, perhaps he can help you smarten up to our standards"

There's a similar one in the news today where lads have gone to school in skirts because the headteacher wouldn't let them wear shorts.

Yes if the situation never occured then there would be no need to make a decision. But it did so there was. Do you think the restaurant made the right call?

The problem is, although most people are sane enough to be able to live without petty rules, there is that small minority who can't. This is the reason why packets of peanuts have to have (by law) 'Warning; May Contain Nuts' on them.

no...I think, given that the man had to travel one hour to get there, that they should have bent the rules on that occasion

Maybe we should ask the restaurant why they thought tramp shoes were more suitable than sandals. Sometimes dress codes have a reason, like if there was a risk the person in question was going to get hot food on their feet and thus sue the restaurant.

However, the dichotomy between dress codes for men and women has always been a head scratcher.

I must admit, the food would have to be biblically good for me to prefer wearing someone else's shoes as opposed to just going home and trying again another night.

Exactly and it was ramadam and the poor guy hadn't eaten all day. They could have asked him to sit in the middle where his feet will be hidden under the table. Personally if i was running a restaurant that was going to be that rigid then i'd invest £20 in spare pair of size 14's that would fit anyone, im sure you'd make it back in grateful tips within 6 months.

I like rules. I don't see any issue with having rules in place. It does bug me though when people think they're above the rules. If the dress code is a certain type of shoe in that particular restaurant then either wear the correct footwear or dine elsewhere. I don't think rules should change for certain individuals.

There's hundreds of rules not enforced rigidly every day.

The sandals one is simple. No one is ruining the guys life. They're simply saying if you want to come in here, then here's our rules. If you don't then crack on. Hardly an oppressive regime? The guy has a choice?

I'd say if it was a busy restaurant there is a health and safety aspect, but if its a posh place then its dress code

Hygiene? Smelly feet in a restaurant? I don't know. It's a condition of entry not a rule that's forced upon me as I carry out my daily life. It's not over bearing in anyway as I have a choice. Enter or stay out?

Because modern British culture is dire for any innovation. Play it safe, stick to the rules, don't take risks... It's all part of the same problem. Do you know that even adjusting for population size, britain is producing half the entrapreneurs america or china do!

I asked for an example of oppression. Personally, I believe that being told that if you wish to enter a restaurant by choice, that you're not allowed to wear sandals isn't a negative experience. Go to the next restaurant. Noone is forcing you.

The opposite. I've learnt a new word: 'Legumes'. Seriously when a peanut isn't a nut then they really need to think about rebranding them.

Heard the guy who was loaned the boots on five live today and the thing i took from the whole 'issue' was that the homeless guy when offered money for the loan of the boots said 'no thank you, if i can help another human then its fine'..

i found that refreshing..

Me too , and the fact that the guy who borrowed them didn't have an issue sticking to the rules is also refreshing . Rules aren't made to be broken , they are there for a reason . A broken plate or glass , or a hot drink spilling onto feet in sandals wouldn't be good .

I'm guessing the restaurant had a dress code, of which I suspect trainers and men's sandles went against the dress code. Some people like dress codes, some don't. It's a free country, so those who enjoy going to an establishment with a strict dress code should have the right to do so, and those who don't like dress codes have their choice of many other establishments to attend. But if those places with a dress code relax their rules every time someone doesn't adhere to the dress code, then it won't be long before the dress code becomes obsolete. Which I'm sure is a reasonable outcome for those who disapprove of dress codes, but a shame for those who do like dress codes.

I always thought it was an indicator of the class of a place - the shittest nightclubs have a dress code. The most obnoxious, tacky golf clubs have dress codes.

If a place has a dress code, its usually a good indicator that you ought to avoid it.

Fair play to the feller who lent the shoes though, although I'd have been tempted to take my custom elsewhere, given that myt money clearly wasn't good enough for the restauraunt in question.

The restaurant is private property. Customers are welcome as long as they comply with the terms and conditions, just like all other businesses have.

Imagine parking your car across two bays in a private car park and saying rules can be relaxed.

"Quote from BBC" a diner who was turned away from a restaurant for wearing sandals had his evening saved by a homeless man who offered him his boots.

Clue: When you think that a tramps shoes make your restaurant more classy than sandals you are missing the fucking point!"

Why do you think anyone would be able to tell they're a tramps?

A decent pair of boots will just be black and blend in regardless of the abuse they've had

Well the thread has served its purpose in the sense of proving that a large proportion of british people don't understand the concept of having rules but using discretion around when to apply them. Or the thought of subjective decision making scares the shit out of them.

Please travel guys... there are far more successful countries than Britain and not because they have better rules than us.

Yes I've seen in betweeners but reality is slightly different.

My boots probably face far more abuse than any tramps being used on motorbikes etc.

But from a distance they ejust black and plain.

Unlike somone bare sanded feet.

Most tramps don't piss in Thier own shoes

And in all those countries nearly every above chain level restaurant will not let you in in Sandles in the evening.

" There's hundreds of rules not enforced rigidly every day.

The sandals one is simple. No one is ruining the guys life. They're simply saying if you want to come in here, then here's our rules. If you don't then crack on. Hardly an oppressive regime? The guy has a choice?

Why do you think they have a no sandals rule?

Maybe because their feet are showing ?

Would they turn a Woman away with open toe shoes ?

I mean the higher level purpose, presumably they think it makes the restaurant look less classy right? "

Because you are forgetting in any decent/high class restaurant the other diners are as much a part of the product as the food and the decor.

You are part of the decoration and the attraction.

Especially when you get to member level places where people will be quite canny in finding out who goes there more than what the foods like.

The foods good to excellent that's pretty much a given in any decent place so you get to more and more petty divisions. The other customers being a big one

Pisses me off when some bus drivers don't let people on when their oyster/bank card isn't working, and others do. Then, some drivers let some people on but don't allow others. I hate inconsistency.

I think that's just common sense though.

Middle class mum with her kids card doesn't work clearly surprised and upset, go on and a nod.

Some chav who blatantly knows the roster is empty and is just trying to get a free ride, jog on.

It's kinda like you walking into tesco going oh I've got no money can you just give me my milk for free?

It's a risk to the driver/cashier so it has to be something they can defend if called up on later by thier superiors

Or they're just tired/having a bad day and can't be arsed to argue lol.

"If rules were constantly being flaunted then were would it all end??? Brexit imho that's where and that should be a lesson we should all learn

A society governed by rigid eternal rules with no subjectivity is the mission of ISIS

A society without rules will become a lawless society, ruled by vigilantism "

.

Without rules there wouldn't be laws to break

I don't think it's a class thing, plus we don't have middle class people here. Some will let everyone on, some won't let anyone on. I live in chav central and don't recall seeing anyone fit that description trying to hop on a bus for nothing. It's usually people on their way to work who have forgotten to top up, or, like me, their bank card has stopped working for some reason. I had to walk.

I can only wear certain shoes just now due to having plantar fasciitis in both feet. Would I be allowed sandals on medical grounds?

I certainly can't wear heels just now. People don't always have a choice on what footwear they can walk in.

I think you are right, the larger portion of society probably doesn't see the point in strict dress codes, and many will consider it snobby, classist or elitist. However, a small proportion of people in this country do enjoy attending a club or restaurant where there is a dress code and an image that is adhered to, and they have every right to do so. So it's not unreasonable if an establishment wishes to make themselves available for this minority market. As long as their dress code is clearly advertised then nobody should be disappointed. Maybe the restaurant you are referring to hadn't made their rules clear, in which case that isn't fair.

I think if there is a medical reason why I can't adhere to the dress code, I would phone in advance and explain.
