Positives about America
Jump to: Newest in thread
After a long term trend of hipsters thinking it's cool to criticise America, let's hear some positives about our cousins. If you want to be negative start your own thread (i.e. fuck off).
To get us going:
1.Natural beauty - (e.g. the grand canyon)
2.The economy, still the worlds leader in innovation having fended off challenges from the Soviet union, japan and china (so far)
3. Hollywood, whilst it's film formula might be getting old now, it made some of the best moments of your childhood
4. They speak English (sort of)
5. American sports are awesome |

When its fall in the Appalachian mountains and the leaves are turning.
You look out over the country side and can not believe that the Great Spirit (god) could make so many different shades of yellow and brown.
There is a crispness in the air and the smell of chimneys makes you hungry.
I guess I'm still a Virginia country boy at heart.

Ok, a few things....
Space - whether it's outside or inside, there is tons of space all around.
Nature - the diversity of natural beauty there is nearly unparalleled in a single country. Our national parks are also outstanding.
Openness - the openness and straight forward attitude of Americans is great. It can seem brash to people who aren't used to it, but I find it honest and comfortable.
Work ethic - the American work ethic can be demanding, but it can also be inspiring. It should perhaps be better balanced for more efficiency, but it's still nice to deal with people so invested in the work they do.
Food - no, I'm not talking about McDonald's. I'm talking about the fact that we take the best food from all over the world and incorporate it into our own culture.
And some things Iove about America, more personally - county fairs, confidence, thanksgiving...
There's so much that I've having trouble writing it all down |

I love America. Travelled around a few states and really enjoyed it.
I'd go there again in a heartbeat if i could afford it and i could travel in a seat with more leg room!! |

When we moved here we had to sell our house. It has two bedrooms (able to fit queen sized beds), a living room, a huge kitchen, a dining room, a spare reading room, a full finished attic, a full unfinished basement, a two car driveway, a yard the same size lot as the house, and front and rear decks.
We had the hardest time selling it because it was "too small for anyone who isn't retired." |

Ok, seriously as it's been many years since I've been to America it's hard to answer this. But as a 'geek' and cinephile I have to acknowledge America's positive influence on those areas.
Plus I spent my youth in the middle east, and I always preferred hanging around with the American expats compared to the other British. Hard to explain why. |

Absolutely! And in just a few weeks I'll be gorging myself on them again. It's not an attractive quality I grant you; it's my weakness. |

I used to live right on the Hudson river, opposite Vassar College. One thing I love about America is the sheer space they have there. I have very fond memories sat in the hot tub on the side of the gorge watching the sun come up the other side of the river.
And on a similar vein... hiking in the Adirondack mountains and canoeing along the river. Recognising places and geographic features written in James Fenimore Cooper books a couple of hundred years earlier.

Its naivety and lack of scepticism. Free soup or salad with a meal. The way it's proud of it's history and it's flag. Things like going to see the trees in fall and the mountain's flowering in spring are done with huge enthusiasm. |

Love the Adirondack mountains. Had a country house there when I was growing up. I was trying to explain the joys of tubing on the Hudson river to a fellow fabber just the other weekend and its hard to put into words. |
