"Good idea to open the door to the attic, to let hot air rise into it, from your home below? I'm assuming that loft insulation will help bedrooms retain their heat below the ceiling otherwise. "
Depends on your roof. Ours is slate so the entire loft space is incredibly warm. Opening the hatch makes zero difference.
In our last house though it was a very quick way of cooling the upstairs down. |

Most of the added heat is coming through your Windows, draw the curtains through the day and as soon as the sun sets open them and let the breeze come through.
I'm not sure whether opening the a loft trap will do anything as most attics are already incredibly hot in this weather, hot air doesn't "rise' if the air in your loft is already 40 degrees your 30 degree air in your house won't "rise" into it |
