"Just read back over the thread and if you look you will see that most comments are on our historical greatness. Yes Britain does have some amazing resorts etc but we just aren't Great any longer. Maybe we should change the name to something more apt, like "we were great once honest"" I think the people still have a great mentality. British people are among the most tolerant and supportive I've ever seen. I've had relatives who've lived abroad for 25+ years and they say the same. For me it would be the British humour. We can laugh at ourselves and not take things too seriously

"We punch way above our weight globally when it comes to music. And in musical history that's fairly recent. A member of my family has been living very much abroad for a decade and the thing he misses most is interesting music that makes you stop and listen. He also misses proper cider and perry since orchards need to be generations old before the fruit is really good enough. But that could be a West Country thing rather than full British." Oh yes! How could I forget cider and perry?! I prefer the U.S. for most things, but I think the cider in this country can't be beat.

Not long ago it was shit, and we do tend to think that American junk food is something worth eating, but our restaurants and chefs are coming along nicely. It's also got less corrupt Government and Police than most other countries, better weather over all than most countries, a better standard of living than most countries, less annoying taxes, free healthcare (mostly), lovely countryside, and more miles of coastline than any other country. OK, we're not the best at anything specific, but the overall experience is great, and I always enjoy coming home."

"There are far better places in this country and definitely far nicer people. I love London, even the sleazy bits. Probably because of reading Neverwhere, and being a complete Tube geek. Oh yes, it's a shame how Soho has become somewhat gentrified. Have you read any of the Rivers of London books by Ben Aaronovitch? It's not that gentrified there's still massage palours getting shut down for slavery every few months lol" its being destroyed by the crossrail project..and yes, a few, very few massage parlours left there, which is no bad thing...but the destruction of one of the oldest, most diverse areas of london is a great shame

I spend a lot of time in soho and there's still dozens and dozens of massage parlours and sleezy shit if that's what you're into. Cross rail hasn't really made any significant change I've noticed.

So Switzerland? i thought it was the english professer as a way of universities contacting one another thanks for letting me know" It was so they could share thier work on site. They started dusting hyper links etc and then it spread and was spun off. TV I thought was farnsworth but not sure if he just developed it after the initial invention. He did make a cool fusion reactor too

Cern was where hyperlinks and the world wide Web system started. But still in Switzerland if lead by a British scientist. Thing is no discoveries now are solely one nation. Look at CERN and ITER any major project is massively multinational now

"My personal opinion, THE NHS, The NHS is what puts the great, in Great Brtain providing healthcare for people of numerous race, colour, creed, ethnicity without discrimination. Imagine america, if you cant afford healthcare, you don't get it. imagine socialist Canada or the capitalist U.S. I hate to think britain turning into a capitalist country like the US " You realise that the NHS performs fairly poorly when compared to other health care systems such as those in Europe? Comparing it to an American system is silly. Compare it to Germany, Sweden etc and it comes up short. Also for "capitalist" America they spend more in government money per person on health care than the uk does Which does show how inefficient thier system is they spend enough in tax money to actually have an NHS but still need private contributions

I'd hate to have a healthcare system like the US. But that doesn't mean we can't learn from other countries. Unfortunately, it seems that when a politician tries to 'reform' the NHS, they have the American model in mind.

The US system ranks very poorly in the world. The NHS ranks about 18th. There are plenty of better systems about but they would cost more. The people who think the NHS is amazing either work there or suffer from some kind of stockholm syndrome.
