Julius Caesar - Life Imitates Art

In recent days, Shakespeare theatres all over the US have been receiving threatening letters, phone calls and e-mails from Trump supporters angered by the Public Theatre production of 'Julius Caesar.'

According to these protesters, PT's decision to portray JC in the guise of Donald Trump means that the company is guilty of inciting violence against Republicans and calling for the assassination of the President.

However, none of the theatres and theatre companies targeted by this vicious hate campaign have anything to do with Public Theatre. They simply have the misfortune to have 'Shakespeare' in their name, or to be currently staging their own production of 'Julius Caesar.'

Ironically, such activity directly mirrors Act III Scene 3 of 'Julius Caesar.' In this scene, we see an angry mob carry out the murder of Helvius Cinna - a friend of Caesar's who is travelling to his funeral - due to the fact that they have mistaken him for the conspirator Lucius Cornelius Cinna.

Yeah because your average Shakespearian theatre go-er is just the sort of militant activist who starts riots

Starts not stars

According to the BBC reports, here are some of the messages received by entirely 'innocent' companies:

Shakespeare Dallas:

"I hope you die and so do your family"

"You truly are a bunch of freaks... We should send all you freaks to ISIS. They would eliminate your stench on this earth with real knives."

Shakespeare & Company, Massachusetts:

"Your play depicting the murder of our President is nothing but pure hatred. You are vile, despicable excuses for human beings. I wish you all the worst possible life you could have and hope you all get sick and die."

"Hope you all who did this play about Trump are the first to die when ISIS COMES TO YOU... scumbags."

"What exactly were you idiots thinking about producing a play that depicts the killing of our President? Does anyone over there have an ounce of morality, decency, and or common sense? Your organization is a disgrace to the community and to the arts. If you have a problem with the president, protest, as is your constitutional right or just vote him out. I will do my best to ensure taxpayers' dollars are not used in the future to fund your disrespect and stupidity!"
