.

In my long ago school days we had a six week holidays, but because my parents had local 'wakes' weeks which were the two weeks rprior to this I could have an extra two weeks, so had 8 weeks

It was horrendous, other then when I could work and then I made a bomb lol

But yes I do think it is too long

It could be better to have a shorted one but it depends on logistics. Schools and colleges do need some time to sort.

I think 4 weeks is more than ample enough time to enjoy the kids go on hols etc after that they just get bored.

am thinking of parental care too

as a single mum with little family support, the girl i work with has major issues to get the summer hols covered off in terms of child care

And school holiday clubs, child care are just too expensive. Ah the pleasures of working in school I get the holidays off. And if I cover holiday club then i get to bring my 9 year old with me.

such a shame that the UK seems to have lost community spirit. When I lived in Wales parents in local communities would often band together to plan, raise funds and sponsors, sort free accommodation, recruit workers and run playschemes for the children. I worked on these as a student and it also kept me outa mischief and gave me a small income during the summer recess.

Thing is these days, everyone wants it but no one seems willing to put in the effort it takes to organise it. Can't expect the state to do everything for us.

totally agree with all the above, especially hard if you have little/no family support around you

and we live in a paranoid nation with a severe distrust of other people beyond family and friends
