Why are they so expensive and surely now you should be able to defend your self above a magistrate court.

Yes i know there is protocol in the system but come on we need to update our aged antique legal system now.

Guys and gals with wigs ??? where are we in georgian times ?.

Paying a barrister £180 per hour saved me losing my house

Money well spent

I went to a US law school and the cost was $60,000 a year for three years (plus books, plus living expenses) of you didn't have a scholarship. That's why it's so expensive in the U.S., don't know about here, though.

Overpriced but worth the money as stated.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I know enough about contract law to know there's no way I could defend myself if there was a legal challenge. Soliciting might be the oldest profession, but I think they're worth it.

Not worth the money,I sacked one in ten minutes before a court case some years ago, went into court and won the case the stupid barrister said I could not win.I never paid him he was to embarrassed to ask for the money.

Some years before that a solicitor took me to court for not paying,I represented myself in the court and won the judge agreeing the solicitor was incompetent.

I allways do my own legal work.Have lost once in five attempts

I also know enough poor lawyers. Barristers are self-employed and, like other self-employed people, often get paid very late.

Not all solicitors work for the huge international firms and earn a fortune.

Some are overpriced and make a fortune. Shop around.

Law is good to be abided by but when it comes to it and consult a solicitor it costs a fortune.

Far to expensive for what you get in return and most information available on the nett now a days, for anyone going to a magistrate court do your home work and defend your self.

Senior court talk to anyone that doesnt cost you anything....end off.

Lawyers are paid by results, the better they are, the more you have to pay. If I had the money it would be silk all the way

We live in the very definition of a capitalist society. Everything is about money.

The money you pay to lawyers doesn't just cover the time you physically spend with them. It reflects the years of training that goes into qualifying and staying on top of changes in the law as well as the costs involved in keeping a firm running which are significant. I should know, I am one.

What is reasonable? They have to cover overheads (including their professional fees and ongoing development) and for other people working for them.

I'm a firm believer in buy cheap, buy twice.

But information on the net is unregulated so how do you know that it is correct?

And people that do not charge are usually not giving advice as they wouldn't open themselves up to be sued for doing a favour. It will be strongly caveated and cautious.
