I was in Guildford today, where I sat outside a seafood place and downed a dozen oysters. I thought of a yachtsman pal that we buried at sea a few years back.
His initials were JB, and at the wake..Well, obviously.
And bugger me, as I thought of him today, whilst eating the first oyster, Bloody Mary in hand, a street choir right outside started singing
The Sloop John B.

"Wouldn't it be nice" is wonderful. I remember Brian Wilson doing it at Glastonbury a few years back. Those tinkling opening chords still give me shivers down my spine every time I hear it.
"God only knows" is simply one of the finest love songs ever written.
..and finally, "Disney Girls 1957" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUttnRlXrJk
This is one of my favourite songs of all time; it brings back so many memories for me - and a tear to my eye - soppy old git that I am. |
