Similar to the posting of "Wish they were here", this is more aimed towards the more mature of us on here, but who misses some of the radio comedy series of years gone by...
EG.
The Navy Lark.
Round The Horne.
The Goons.
I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again.
Hancock's Half Hour.
In some ways, they don't make them like that any more! |

And don't forget the Clitheroe Kid. Reminds me of Sunday lunch sitting around the radio waiting for dinner. Always remember the line from The Navy Lark with Captains Purvy's wife Remona cooking him "bean on toast" |

Or not letting him play with his rubber ducks in the bath if he got the dusting wrong! Priceless!
A lot of today's comedy lies in those early broadcast series. |

You sure this isn't a biker thread in disguise? "
Nope, it's a genuine one.
My. you've not lived if you haven't heard the likes of Julian and Sandy, Rambling Sid Rumpo, aided and abetted by Kenneth Horne, Betty Marsden, Bill Pertwee and Douglas Smith.
Classic Comedy! |

It was a "language" that Kenneth Williams and the script writers initially concocted to get around the strict BBC rules of no references to sex, homosexuality and so on.
Some of the words came from the homosexual community that Kenneth Williams adapted. Others were reversals of existing words, of which the one I can recall is "riah" which actually means hair.
It had an effect instantly on audiences; they lapped it up, and the Beeb had to give in, especially as audience listening figures were going through the roof! |

in the past couple of years we;ve been fortunate to get tickets to recordings of a few Radio4 recordings (Hut)33, The Castle. Sneakypeeks and a couple of others and were not only great nights out ... but also great nights in to snuggle up and hear what we had been at |

Not going back quite as far and I know it is still being recorded, but the original 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue'
The late Humph and Willie Rushton. Tim Brooke Taylor, Graeme Garden, Barry Cryer and of course who could forget Samantha.
I loved 'one song to the tune of another'. But never got 'Mornington Crescent'. But then again were we supposed to? |
