Like I said, it begins to set up the dichotomy between utilitarianism and deontology. But as you say, it is severely lacking in necessary information (such as what happens if I don't make a choice, how severe the injury is, etc.). Which is why I didn't answer and just left it with.... |

You've clearly not thought of the bigger picture.
It wouldn't be one person, you'd hurt their friends and family indirectly.
It wouldn't be a 1000 people, it would be a 1000 people plus their friends and family.
I'd choose the one person and if they couldn't understand my logic, then I overestimated their intelligence and would now sacrifice them for being a dumb shit |

Three people tied to a track with a train coming for them. There is a split on the track which you can turn to change the course of the train, and that only lands on one person.
Which do you choose and why? |

I think I would look at the 1000s and pick one or two I liked and really get to know them better. As if you keep going back getting hurt it not working and moving on is better. |

there's loads of different questions like the OPs, they bring up some interesting reasons about why we treat people the way we do.
another one is 5 people are going to get run over by a train but you can push a fat guy in front of the train and save them. do you push him?
then you get a lot of interesting answers like; is the life of one person more valuable than saving loads of lives, if he's fat do you not care he dies coz many people think being fat apparently means you do not care about yourself so he might as well die, stuff like that. you can get some good insights on how humans think.
another is you need to transplant organs into 5 people to save them, but you have to kill a person for the organs you need. would you kill them. again this is asking how your morals are. |
