Hey ladies,
Just curious about your experiences....
I barely have any issues as such when I am menstruating other than a bad stomach sometimes, but approximately a week or so before I feel crap....
My energy levels fall through the floor - I'm generally exhausted, I lose my appetite, feel bloated and uncomfortable and my breasts get so painful that even touching them hurts. I get sooooooooo tearful, grumpy, miserable as hell and irritable that I could either sob my heart out or blòody murder someone!!!
I have had PMT before, but it seems to be getting worse.
I am only 43, but could it be getting worse as I get nearer the menopause???
I take evening primrose and try to do everything I can to prevent these symptoms, but they get me down sometimes. The exhaustion and moods are the worst by far. |

Get a Mirena Coit fitted - 5 years no periods, no PMT and no more symptoms to get you through the Menopause years.
Doesn't suit some folks - but worth a try.
I've had 3 and only side effect - increased libido - which isn't always useful lol

I can relate. You could be starting your perimenopausal stage.
Sometimes anti depressants are prescribed for the mood swings. I guess you could try St John's wort.
Just check with GP to ensure it's not anaemia or thyroid dysfunction.

Yes, pms does tend to worsen in the lead-up to menopause, and fatigue is a common symptom in perimenopausal women.
There are a lot of remedies, both conventional and alternative, unfortunately it's a question of trial and error to find something that will help, as every woman responds differently, additionally you need to allow at least 3 cycles to see whether there is any benefit. It might be worth looking at your diet too, caffeine and certain foods can worsen pms. |

This is a lucky lady although I wouldn't say it's the mirena that's stopping peri and menopause symptoms as symptoms are caused by declining levels of oestrogen not progesterone (mirena doesn't contain oestrogen). |

i used to get all that, the boob pain was in my armpits also.
after i had kids it got less and the only symptom i really got was tiredness (and grumpy coz i was tired).
since i get nearer the menapuase all symptoms have completely gone, like i wouldn't even know my period was due if i didn't have an app for that.
i definitely recommend going your doctor too. PMT is a legit condition that can be treatable. |

I do not want the coil due to weight gain, risk of infection etc and I don't need the contraceptive benefits.
Plus, it's only a hunch that I'm hitting menopause, not had any tests to confirm that I am menopausal as yet. Think I'll visit the docs though.
Thank you for advice - it's appreciated |

How long since you last had a full set of bloods doing at your Drs?
Might be worth an ask to see if theres anything else underlying throwing off these symptoms. |

I think I had a full blood count, thyroid function, liver function, and glucose tolerance test as well as a clear cervical smear approx 6-10 months ago or thereabouts |

I'm not at the menopause stage yet obviously, but I've had bloating and bad fatigue on the days when my periods were their heaviest. Iron supplements & high iron foods helped me with the latter |

I get exactly this, and it's got worse with age. I've never known a tiredness like it before. I've recently found out I'm anaemic so I'm hoping when my iron levels are back to normal I may see an improvement. I don't like taking tablets at the best of time so very loathe to start taking the pill or other contraceptives besides I don't think it's healthy to stop your periods for prolonged times.
I don't know what the answer is but I know I couldn't put up with another 15 years of this.
Hope you find your answer soon

Awww Ginger,
Sounds like you are having problems and trouble too babe?
Are you in contact with your gp regularly? Is the contraceptive pill a consideration for you? If so it maybe a sensible option if it eases your symptoms.
Unfortunately there is no easy answer for some of us ladies sometimes...
We have to do periods, babies and as if all that wasn't enough - the final hurdle - menopause.
Isn't mother nature delightful

I'd disagree with that. I've gained weight with mine now on my second coil. Probably have it now until I'm in my 50's. Sex drive is good though and no periods. There is a Facebook page you should check out. |

Interesting re: weight gain and mirena coil, because that's the contraceptive that was recommended to me being overweight as NOT having weight gain as a risk. I did quite a bit of research myself too, but clearly if people here have experienced it then so something to be aware of. |

I had horrendous periods before I got the coil- I would be on and bleeding heavily for 3-4 weeks, then maybe a week off (if I was lucky, usually less) then back on again. Got the Mirena fitted Oct 2013 and haven't looked back since- haven't noticed any weight gain (but then I was 'fabulous' anyway) mood swings aren't a problem, acne and rosacea are a little worse bit treatable. All I get now is a watery bleed a few times a year which lasts a day or two, I get my coil checked at the GUM clinic when I have my monthly STI check, to make sure it is in place etc, and I feel much more 'balanced' now I have it. No horrible periods, cramps etc.
It does hurt going in if you haven't had babies naturally (vaginally) but if you have then it'll be much easier as your cervix will be softer. |

Can I just give a flip side experience of the Mirena
It made my life a misery for 3 months
I bled heavilly and continuously
The nurses bigged it up and never gave me any warning of any possible serious side effects, apart from mentioning maybe the odd bit of spotting for the first few weeks and telling me how marvellous it would be for my heavy periods etc
Apparently they encourage it more widely now as it is one of the cheapest options available and massively play down the possible side effects, rather than giving everyone the full information
After I had it removed I did some reasearch and found that my problem was far from rare
From personal experience, I would heavilly advise against it

I had the same experience with the Mirena.
It got so bad I had to stop going out. The nurses just kept saying it would calm down. In the end I had to demand they took it out otherwise I wouldn't leave the surgery.
I ended up having an Endometrial Ablation as I just continually bled from the coil.Best thing for me! Two sides to every procedure.
Good luck x |

That is exactly what she prescribed for me. Just one pill a day and I feel normal again. And I am older than the OP

Your last paragraph is inaccurate. Have the coil fitted as you have your last days of your period. |

Get to your GP and ask for the full Thyroid blood screening.
Explain your symptoms and at least get it checked.
I was feeling dead on my feet, so not me but once on Thyroxin, put me back to being me.

I would like to add to this. I have the same symptoms, had bloods taken. Turns out I'm anaemic, high cholesterol and vitamin d deficiency.
I've been prescribed iron, vitamin d and antidepressants.
I'm just waiting for it all to start kicking in. |
