Torquay

Soak layers of old newspapers in buckets of water and put them in trays with plant pots on top...top trays up to the top with water the day before you go away.

Cover tomato plants and strawberry plants with polythene bags to keep moisture in.

•Water all pots, containers, beds and borders well before you go

•Move containers out of the sun to a shadier, more sheltered location in the garden. This will protect them from the sun and reduce the rate at which they use water

•Plunge pots into gaps in border soil. This will keep plants cooler. As compost dries it will begin to take up moisture from the soil

•Move houseplants out of direct sunlight and water well

•Place an old soaked towel in the bottom of the bath or sink and stand pots on top. Moisture from the towel will be absorbed as needed

•Use greenhouse shading to protect plants in the greenhouse. Where appropriate stand plants in shallow trays of water

It was like she managed to grow ready made mash! Poor woman. All that work for pre-mashed spuds and the odd over-sized courgette.

Pay the kid next door to water stuff. If no kid next door substitute kid 2 doors down, relative, friend, neighbour, milkman but make sure you make arrangements early and do not be a donkey and leave it till the last minute or you may find nobody willing.
